Beyond the Thames Barrier, the route is waymarked with the Thames Barge symbol rather than the National Trail acorn. This is because the Thames Path National Trail officially ends at the Thames Barrier but it is possible to continue the walk as far as the boundary with Kent. There is a continuous riverside path all the way along the Thames as far as the River Darent on the Bexley boundary with Dartford. There are plans to extend further through the Kent side of the Thames Gateway. Eventually it is hoped the 'Source to Sea' Path will materialise on both sides of the Thames. The working river displays all the muscularity of its ancient history, built up by hard graft since Henry VIII's royal dockyard at Woolwich was established to build a new generation of naval warships. Woolwich Arsenal grew up alongside to supply munitions, and Thamesmead was built on a vast network of 'tumps' to contain explosions, some of which can still be seen. Across the river, equally vast operations are visible where giant cranes move and shape the last landfill into new hillsides and Ford at Dagenham's wind turbines symbolise the post-industrial end of oil. The cargo ships now come only as far as Tilbury and the vast sea container ports on the north side of the river; whereas Erith with its pier, once a Victorian pleasure resort, retains a seaside feel.

It has great contrasts, rising from the River Thames to Oxleas Meadow, one of the highest points in inner London. The route is mainly level but there are some steep slopes and three long flights of steps, two of which have sign-posted detours. There is a mixture of surfaced paths, a little pavement, rough grass, and un-surfaced tracks. There are many bus stops along the way, so you can break your walk. Did you know? Directions The walk starts by the southern end of the Woolwich Foot Tunnel, adjacent to the River Thames and heads along by the river towards the Thames Barrier. Did you know?     Bus Services In South Newham TfL Surface Transport – Buses Directorate May 2014 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 There are three major developments in LB Newham that are of sufficient size as to significantly influence the bus network (see map 1). 1.2 Crossrail operates in two branches through Newham. One branch is the existing Shenfield – Liverpool Street line. The other is a new branch to Abbey Wood which will create a new station at Custom House in Royal Docks. 1.3 The Royal Docks is a priority GLA Opportunity Area with significant re-development planned and proposed. In addition to Crossrail, there are a number of major brownfield sites slated for redevelopment, proposed new river crossings, a planned expansion of London City Airport and a number of infrastructure interventions (e.g. roads) being considered. It is also adjacent to the Isle of Dogs and Barking Riverside regeneration areas. 1.4 Stratford and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park has undergone significant change with the opening of Westfield Stratford City and the transformation of the Olympic Park. More is planned as the Olympic legacy is delivered. 1.5 This study seeks to identify how the bus network will evolve to accommodate the re- development of the Royal Docks and the opening of the Crossrail Abbey Wood branch. It has a time horizon of 2019 – 2021 by which time Crossrail will have opened and the initial phases of many of the main development are envisaged to have been completed even though full build out will be many years after. 1.6 Plans for how the bus network will alter to accommodate the Stratford City and Olympic Park changes have already been identified and, in many instances, implemented.

    Business Case for Refurbishment of the Greenwich and Woolwich Foot Tunnels 1. The Scheme The scheme is for a major refurbishment of the foot tunnels at Greenwich and Woolwich. The tunnels are over 100 years old and suffer from an increasing amount of water penetration, unreliable lifts and an uninviting walking environment. Despite this, they are well used both by local residents and, in the case of Greenwich, by tourists. Their unique contribution to London’s transport network is the provision of a 24/7 opportunity to cross the River Thames by foot or cycle. The refurbishment scheme will provide: Total replacements of the lifts Refurbishment of the domes above the lifts Enhanced CCTV coverage of the tunnels and help points with 24/7 monitoring Enhanced lighting within the tunnels A better quality environment within the tunnels with refreshed tiling and improved cleaning Improved signing to the tunnels Provision of real time information The outcomes of the scheme are: Reliable lifts A facility which can be consistently used by all sections of the community including disabled and elderly people The preservation of the tunnels by controlling the rate of water penetration The preservation of the Grade II listed buildings by control of water penetration. A significant increase in journey ambience through the tunnels, together with increased lighting and security, 24 hours a day. 2. Costs Capital Costs Do-minimum Without the scheme, the tunnels will still remain open for a while. The lifts will continue to operate with one member of staff per lift from 7am to 9pm. The lifts will however become increasingly unreliable.
