FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Stetson University Theatre Arts Opens Season with Royal Comedy-Drama ‘The Lion in Winter’ DELAND, Florida, Sept. 30, 2019 – Stetson Theatre Arts begins its 114th season with James Goldman’s classic play “The Lion in Winter,” directed by Anthony Garcia. The comedy-drama is a tale of royalty, sibling rivalry and adultery, and will run from Oct. 10-13 at Stetson University’s Second Stage Theatre in the Museum of Art – DeLand. “The Lion in Winter,” which was adapted into the 1968 film, starring Katharine Hepburn and Peter O’Toole, tells the story of the Plantagenet family, who are locked in a free-for-all of competing ambitions to inherit a kingdom. In this play, King Henry II of England; his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine; sons Richard the Lionheart, Geoffrey and John; and King Philip II of France and his sister, Alais, render an articulate, witty and darkly comic view of dysfunctional, medieval royal families. It is a modern-day classic you don’t want to miss. “As ‘The Lion in Winter’ demonstrates, the remarkable thing isn’t that family battles continue year after year, but rather that we keep coming home to re-engage,” explained Garcia. “Despite its tragic nature, Goldman’s play brilliantly captures the dark comedy in this situation. PRODUCTION BIOS ROBERT HALMI, SR. (Executive Producer) – Robert Halmi, Sr., of RHI Entertainment, LLC (formerly Hallmark Entertainment, LLC), is described in his 1999 Peabody Award citation as "perhaps the last of the great network television impresarios." TV Guide calls him "TV's master showman." These and other descriptions sit comfortably on the shoulders of one of the industry's most prolific and respected producers; a man who, in little more than two decades, has created a signature niche in the television business, producing quality, family-friendly long form entertainment. Halmi has produced nearly 200 television films, miniseries and motion pictures, including five-time Emmy Award® winning “The Josephine Baker Story,” “Gypsy” (Bette Midler), “Mr. and Mrs. Bridge” (Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward) and “Gulliver's Travels” (Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen), another winner of five Emmy® Awards. There’s No Other Way To Be King: The Psych Drama Company’s “The Lion in Winter” “How dear of you to let me out of jail.” ~ Eleanor “It’s only for the holidays.” ~ Henry No matter how unconventional you think your holiday season is going to be this year, there’s no question that the royals of James Goldman’s The Lion in Winter have you beat. After keeping his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, imprisoned for a decade, Henry II has released her just in time to welcome his guest, Philip II, the King of France. The visit, however, is merely an event around which Goldman can construct some of the finest and most devious strategizing and medieval plotting in theater history, and some of its wittiest dialogue. A story that hangs on its wordplay can sometimes falter in a live setting, but it makes for a perfect audio experience, especially when the sound quality is as good as what Psych Drama Company is offering in their radio version of the play. We say “radio” now that more and more theaters are turning back to the great tradition of sound-only storytelling, but it’s really more along the lines of theatrical podcasting, and I mean that in the best way possible. The voices Psych Drama have assembled to tell this story are perfectly matched to their parts, and clearly adept at seizing Goldman’s rich text and making it sing. I could have listened to Brian Dion as King Henry all day, as he chastised his sons and grappled with his worthy foe of a wife.

THE LION IN WINTER Second Draft of A Screenplay by James Goldman Revised 11th October !I i A WORD ABOUT CASTLES THE LION IN WINTER was a special and peculiar sort of history play. To make its style and intention clear on film, the look of the castle where it occurs and the sense of castle life need to be earthly real and, at the same time, strikingly different from what we're used to seeing in King Arthur movies. Almost nothing is known about the castle at Chinon as it was in Henry's time; and little enough is known about 12th century castles in general. One thing is clear, however, and important for our purposes: only that such castles looked nothing like what we expect. The stone fortresses that remain today were only the shell of castles as they were lived in. Most of the shelter for most of the staff, all of the workshops -- the armories, forges, stables and so on -- were made of wood. A castle courtyard was a crowded, teeming, dirty place with much more wood than stone to greet the eye. A major castle, as Chinon was, was like a miniature town. Everything necessary to the life of the establishment existed inside the walls. Poultry, livestock, looms and tailors, mills for grinding grain, vast storerooms, water wells, boot makers, gardens -- everything vital to life under siege was somehow packed in. At special times, like the Christmas Court during which the film occurs, the congestion was even worse than usual. All guests, the visiting nobles and clergymen, traveled with trains of varying size.
