It encompasses the philosophies that emphasize co-operative action in the solution of economic and social problems. The non-exploitation of hurnans by humans is fundamental. This is a philosophical position of most of the major religions of the world. Cutisçyueiiiiy. wlien the social piiilusophy of ço-uperation kvas bçiiig articulated by social philosophers one and two centuries aga it was closely related to the core philosophical positions in religion and could be viewed as the secutarization of these morak into business and economic life. ' This research is a historical study of the Canadian social gospel movement and its attempt to inspire and work for the transformation of society. from one based on social oppression to one centred on co-operation. brotherhood/sisterhood. justice and equity in econornic. social. and political relationships. Engendering the process that would affect the realisation of the Kingdom of God on earth was the essence of the social evangrlism of the conscientised. radical clerics. who identifted thernselves as social gospellers. bl y research explores the aryment t hat the social rospel movement in English-speaking, Protestant Canada would have done more to advance its goal of a just economic. social and political ordrr. if it had integrated a comprehensive and integrated CO-operativeeconomic development approach with its electoral political strateg. The cms of my argument is that the social ~ospellersshould have $en most of their attention to building the self-management capacity of oppressed and sympathetic social groups. which would have been actualised through a comprehensive CO-operativeeconomic programme. An adult education programme centred on the goal of fostering critical consciousness-raiçing and t'unctional knowledge and sskills in econornic and social self-management would have had tu be an indispensable part ofthis process. In every society and particularly modern. industrial capitalist ones. the ownership and/or control of economic resources. assets and capital give the controllin5 agents of these objects a paramount Say in the rnanner in which life is orsanised. It does not rnatter. substantively. if progressive political forces are in controf of the govemmental rnachinery. By exercising strategic domination of property and wealth. the capitalist classes can effectively nullify the core elernent of a reformist mandate of a governing radical pany. The social democratic administration ( 1990- 1995) of the New Democrat Party of Ontario was a good example of the hostility and obstruction that big businesses and other entrenched interests may place in the path of a political pany with a progessive predisposition. This concern was rnost evident in that government's attempt at putting in place povernment-controlled automobile insurance. and effecting fair employment (ernployment equity) legislation. Politically and philosophically. my orientation as an anarchist predisposed me to look within and io civil society for any manifestations of its capacity to self-organise. What is suggested by the preceding statement is. whether there e'rist within civil society the social movements. knowledge. skills and attitude for its politically progressive elements to serve as a catalyst for the creation of democratic. non- hierarchical and inclusive orsanisai ions, through which the people may seek to construct transfomative economic and social relations. With respect to the Canadian social g~spelmovement and its social mandate. there was a parallel movement whose origin in Europe and latter emergence in Canada was a reaction against the victorious capitalist economic order. Co-operatives wit h its social p hilosophy of CO-operation are entities that progessive civil society actors can use to Foster a cultural revolution grounded in socially-transformative values and practice. Co-operatives as organisational structures are no doubt pan of capitalist societies. At times it is difficult to qualitatively differentiate CO-operatives From outnght capitalist businesses. because their mode of operation and profit maximising behaviour are essentially the same. This state of atyairs has led some observers to question CO- operatives pedigree as socially transformaiive instruments. However. it should be noted that CO-operativeswere found in

    222 FURBY STREET YOUNG UNITED CHURCH HISTORICAL BUILDINGS COMMITTEE 31 October 1985 222 FURBY STREET YOUNG UNITED CHURCH Situated at the corner of Broadway and Furby Street, this large brick church is an important landmark in this west end neighbourhood. Originally Young Methodist, the present church consists of a 1906 building joined to a 1910 structure. The earlier section is on the west side, facing Broadway, while the 1910 section faces east onto Furby. At the present time the west portion contains the sanctuary while the east portion includes offices, classrooms and meeting space. While this Young Church structure belongs to the twentieth century, the church as a spiritual community had its origins in 1892 with the founding of the first young Methodist Church. Methodism was the largest of the Protestant churches in Canada at the time,1 having been established with British ties in the Maritimes in 1765 and infused with an American strain in Upper Canada with the arrival of the United Empire Loyalists. These two dominant strains were reinforced with subsequent immigrations and the national church united in 1874.2 This particular church recalls the name of Rev. George Young, an energetic missionary who first brought Methodism to the prairies in 1868.3 As the first of the Methodist circuit preachers, Rev. Young saw the mother church, Grace Methodist, established in Winnipeg as well as the founding of Wesley College, later United College and the University of Winnipeg.4 Certainly Young Church remains to honour the early Methodist missions in the prairie west, while the impact of the Methodist Church is substantial indeed.

    The Church as Employer: Ideology and Ecclesial Practice during Labour Conflict OSCAR COLE-ARNAL Christian denominations within twentieth-century Canadian history, and in the United States, have produced numerous statements on social justice. Indeed, some of these reflect rather radical traditions. As well, one can readily find books which contain the more prominent of these documents, often with thoughtful commentary and analysis. By way of one example, Gregory Baum, Canada’s most noted Catholic theologian, has done significant work through his commentaries on social Catholic encyclicals and justice promulgations by Canadian and Québec bishops.1 These statements provide an invaluable resource for analyzing where particular Christian denominations stand officially in terms of rhetoric and public principles. However, they by no means provide sufficient data on how effectively or passionately these churches put principle into practice. Of course, there are different ways to get at this issue of comparing stated values and institutional practice, and this paper proposes to look at two case studies in Canadian history (one Protestant and one Roman Catholic) around the question of how well the church acts as an employer in relation to its stated justice values. Although there is no attempt to be exhaustive here, I will suggest that the weight which churches give to their stated principles can be assessed most clearly by how well they practice these convictions.     “A Square Deal for the Least and the Last”: The Career of W.G. Smith in the Methodist Min- istry, Experimental Psychology, and Sociology Stephen Harold Riggins Introduction Although it is a convention for authors to seek anonymity by using initialized pen names, W.G. Smith is an exceptionally anonymous name. “I have no photograph, not having visited a photographer in ten years,” he wrote in April 1921. “I shall have to ‘sit,’ if you desire one, but I thrive best in obscurity.” It is this modesty that is responsible for W.G. Smith’s (1873-1943) obscurity. He should be remembered today as a Newfoundlander who contributed to the intellectual life of Canada before Newfoundland joined Canada in 1949. Salem Bland (1859-1950) in his book The New Christianity; or, The Religion of the New Age — a key text for the social gospel movement — acknowledged an intellectual debt to two people, an editor and “my friend, Professor W.G. Smith of the University of Toronto, who gave me valuable criticisms and suggestions” (Bland, 1973: 6). Smith was also a friend of another important intellectual figure in Toronto, the philosopher George John Blewett (1873-1912). Among all the nineteenth- and twentieth- century idealist philosophers in Canada, Blewett may be the most significant for a rational Christian understanding of the relationship between humans and nature (Armour and Trott, 1981: 321). Blewett is the author of The Study of Nature and the Vision of God (1907) as well as The Christian View of the World (1912). Born in the town of Cupids in March of 1873, W.G.

    To The Reader This brochure is an introduction to 15 citizens interred at Brookside Cemetery, each with a connection to the 1919 Winnipeg General Strike. Through these individuals, the story of the General Strike – the seminal event in Canadian labour history – comes to life. The persons portrayed are a diverse group. They include strike leaders, left- wing politicians, feminists, activists and ordinary workers. Among them were the two men who were shot on Bloody Saturday – June 21, 1919. The map of the cemetery, included here, guides visitors to the general location of the tour’s graves. All sections in the cemetery are clearly marked. Visiting the gravesites in the order they appear here requires about a two-hour stroll through the cemetery. All graves are marked and numbered with small cement cones. Some cones are clearly visible, while others have been grown over. Having the grave numbers plus the photos of those gravesites with gravestones or markers will assist in locating each grave. (Note: Three individuals, Fred Dixon, Jessie Kirk and Matilda Russell, do not have any form of marker.) Please do not lean on the gravestones or disturb any flowers or other commemorative objects. Guided tours are conducted in the summer months. There is no charge, but pre-registration is required. A minimum of five persons and a maximum of 20 are tour guidelines. Please contact Paul Moist to arrange a tour at [email protected]. The Brookside Cemetery Tour was undertaken as a centenary project in recognition of the 100th anniversary of the General Strike. The history of Winnipeg workers is important, particularly the history of the General Strike and its aftermath.

    Constructing a Labour Gospel: Labour and Religion in Early 20th-Century Ontario Melissa Turkstra ON 14 DECEMBER 1900, just under 50 working men gathered in the lecture hall of James Street Baptist Church in Hamilton, Ontario, to meet with its pastor, Rev. J.L. Gilmour. Rev. Gilmour’s primary objective in organizing this meeting was to so- licit the opinion of workers in order to gain a better understanding of why more working men did not attend church. What is most striking about this meeting is how animated and frank these men were in their responses to the minister. Most of the men conceded that the church did have a message for workers; one worker even ad- mitted that, in his opinion, Christianity was the only answer for the current social and labour problems while another quoted from the Bible to demonstrate that it had many relevant messages for workers. At the same time, the general consensus was that the churches were not successfully reaching the masses. Part of the problem, the men claimed, was the presence of “unchristian” manufacturers in the high of- fices of the church. Long hours and hard work were also cited as key factors keep- ing men from attending church. The men offered several suggestions of how the churches could amend this situation. First, ministers had to concentrate less on the spiritual welfare of the people and more on their temporal welfare. This meant, for example, that church leaders needed to join in the fight for the shorter workday and denounce the present competitive system.

It would be an understatement to acclaim this book as one of the most signifi- cant studies yet written in Canadian cultural history. Not only has Allen selected as his subject a man who was preternaturally sensitive to the currents and count- er-currents in Victorian culture and society, but he makes Bland, later to be one of the most renowned of Canada’s left-wing Protestant preachers and thinkers, come alive as a three-dimensional, complicated person. In contrast to some accounts depicting Canadian Protestantism’s equanimity in the face of evolution- ary science, Allen, who in 1973 in The Social Passion: Religion and social reform in Canada 1914-28 defined the “Social Gospel” for a generation of Canadian histo- rians, now reveals a deeply troubled religious world — and a man who braved heresy trials and public censure to speak out on some of the most sensitive doc- trinal issues in the nineteenth-century Ontario Methodist universe. Allen deftly identifies the emergent late-Victorian intellectual contradic- tion: “The problem in 1890... was that the science of the real world whether of nature, history, or biblical studies had bypassed and now challenged the mix of Baconian method, Newtonian law, and biblical absolutism most contemporary Canadian evangelicals, even the more forward-looking, had incorporated in their world view.
