Roy Johnson, 1949-2018 Wed., May 16 | We were saddened to learn that Roy Johnson, an AACC member since 2014, passed away. Roy A. Johnson, 69, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at home with his family by his side. Born in Trenton, he grew up in New Egypt, attending Allen‐ town High School (’67). There, he met his high school sweetheart, Paulinea (Nurko), whom he married. They resided in both New Egypt and Jacobstown, prior to moving to Coopersburg, PA four years ago. After graduating, Roy entered the Air National Guard as a Weapons Technician, stationed at McGuire Air Force Base. He attended Trenton State College and graduated in 1986 with a degree in Elementary Education. He later earned his certification for Special Education at Georgian Court College. He was a long time teacher in the North Hanover School District and finished his career with the Springfield Township School District. Roy loved [C]orvettes and was a member of the Allentown Area Corvette Club of Pennsylvania. When not home, he and his wife could be found traveling the country in his [C]orvette, enjoying the south and the Smoky Mountains. Roy was also a proud Mason and member of the Mt. Moriah Lodge #28 F & AM of Bordentown. He was an avid wood‐ worker and gardener, spending a lot of time in his woodshop and in his garden. Earlier in his life, he enjoyed raising beagles and rabbit hunting. Roy loved to joke around and living life his way. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and will be deeply missed. Predeceased by his parents Lester and Dorothy Johnson and his sister Faith, he is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years Paulinea Johnson (Nurko), his daughters: Leslie Longyhore and her husband Daniel of Macungie, PA and Hope Johnson and Eric Mueller of Nazareth, PA. His sisters: JoAnn Reynolds and her husband James of Longs, SC and Donna Rath and her husband Gary of Floral City, FL. Five grandchildren: Christopher, Alexandra and Nathaniel Longyhore and Chace and Charlotte Mueller and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services [were] 11 am Monday, May 21 at the Peppler Funeral Home, 114 S. Main St, Allentown, NJ. Interment [followed] in Emley’s Hill Cemetery. Friends [could] call Sunday evening from 5 to 7 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Roy’s name to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Donor Services, PO Box 98018, Washington, DC 20090‐8018.

Thinking of You Our sympathies are with member Dale Terry whose mother, Dorothea (Sharer) Terry , passed away on May 30th. Recap: Springfest 2018; the Story & Images Sun., May 06 | Joe and Denise Iervolino returned to their relaxed lifestyle now that their second Springfest has come and gone. They were prepared for a record‐breaking event, but the threatening weather kept the show participation down with 143 registered ‘Vettes. (They hosted 186 in 2017.)

This year’s Tricky Tray had an expanded “high‐end” section, thanks to the generous donations solicited by our mem‐ bers and our charitable community.

Special guest for the event was Ken Lingenfelter, owner of Lingenfelter Performance Engineering in Indiana. Ken spent the day speaking and taking photos with and signing items for his follow Corvette enthusiasts. During his presentation, Ken explained how he became associated with his namesake company, shared stories of his own racing career, and made everyone drool over the powerful machines created by Lingenfelter Performance Engineering. He even gave an open invitation for members to visit his personal car collection in the greater Detroit area.

As you noticed in the President’s letter on the cover page, Joe and Denise are handing the leadership reins over for 2019. While many committee chairs have been identified, AACC still needs the overall leaders to be named. Thanks to the Iervolinos for maintaining the high standard for AACC’s Springfest Corvette Show — who is next? Will it be you?

Recap: County Corvette Tour Sat., May 12 | 21 club members toured the new County Corvette facility (West Chester, PA), including their still‐under‐construction paint booth. The group was also treated to a tour of a nearby private car collection.

Thanks to Jeanette and Scott Marakovits for organizing this event. 23 Photos by Laura Hegyi

Recap: Cornwall Iron Furnace Thu., May 17 | Club members toured the oldest surviving cold‐blast furnace in the western hemisphere. Everyone had a nice time at the furnace despite the rain. Only a few Corvettes made the journey. Thanks to Bobbie Paul for organiz‐ ing this “historic” activity.

Recap: Memorial Day Parade by Valerie Ferguson (‘17) Mon., May 28 | A group of AACC members participated in the annual Bethlehem Memorial Day Parade starting at Liberty High School and ending at Bethlehem Memorial Cemetery. There, they ob‐ served a moving Memorial Day Service including a moment of silence, recognition of Gold and Blue Star Mothers, the release of white doves, a 21 gun salute and Taps.

After the service, several of the members drove their Corvettes, picking up few addi‐ tional members along the way, in what has become an annual AACC event of paying respect to two local fallen soldiers — Captain Christopher Seifert and PFC Joshua Klinger. We placed American Flags (donated by Lowes) at the Memorial Gardens of  Valerie & Blair Ferguson each of their homes. Each year we seem to interact more and more with the parents of these soldiers who are most appreciative of the fact that our club has not forgotten their sons. We additionally placed a laminated sign (made by Laura Hegyi) that AACC remembers Christopher and Joshua. Those who attended had many remarks on how meaningful an event like this is — AACC Cares!

Highmark Walk-A-Thon Chair: Ike Eisenhart (‘66, ‘11) Sat., Jun. 02 | As we go to print, someof our more “active” club members will step out for the 2018 Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community and support the Meals on Wheels effort. Participating mem‐ bers who raised at least $30 in donations will receive a t‐shirt sporting the club’s name.

AutoWeek’s 6 Questions on ZR1 by Jake Lingeman (AutoWeek.com) Thu., May 03 | The 2019 Chevy Corvette ZR1 is incontrovertibly an engineering marvel. Taking a nuclear reactor like the LT5, attaching it to a real‐deal clutch and forcing 755 hp (and 715 lb‐ft of torque) through the driveline, rear diff[,] and eventually to the rear wheels[,] takes planning, more planning and lots of math. Coping with nearly 1,000 pounds of downforce and all that heat takes work too. We had a few questions for the ZR1 engineers after the first drive; here are their answers. Autoweek: What was the limiting factor for power and torque production, other than money, of course? Heat? Fuel? Air? Packaging? Tadge Juechter, chief engineer: The limiting factor was packaging. How physically large could our engine be that was still usable at the track. Autoweek: What was the single greatest challenge of heat extraction for the 755‐hp motor? Juechter: The challenge was to see how many heat exchangers you can get in the car to get quality air as we are tapped for space.

Autoweek: What was the unexpected component that needed reinforcement with the added power? Alex MacDonald, Chevy development driver/engineer: The X pipe in the center of the exhaust needed reinforcement due to the heat and pressure.

Autoweek: Corvettes are usually user friendly ‐‐ performance cars an average schlub can drive. The last ZR1 did how‐ ever have a reputation for being a bit nervous at high speeds. Is that an issue now? If not, why not?

MacDonald: The C6 Z06 was neutral in terms of downforce. Our Z06 and ZR1 have significant downforce. The ZR1 has 60 percent more than Z06.

Autoweek: At the unveiling, you guys said ZR1s have their own bodywork forward of the A‐pillar. Can you tell me spe‐ cifically which pieces are different?

MacDonald: Every piece forward of the A‐pillar is new. Autoweek: How would you spec your personal ZR1? Juechter: Admiral blue with black wheels. Manual transmission with the Competition seats and low wing.

News from 2019 Corvette Seminar by Scott Huntington (CorvetteOnline.com)

Fri., May 04 | April ended with a bang, with the National Corvette Museum’s annual bash. The highlight of the event was the What’s New Seminar, which allowed attendees to get a glimpse of the new Corvette models coming in 2019. Let’s take a look at the latest news coming out of the seminar, and what it means for car lovers the world over.

2017 was a great year for the Corvette, with the car holding more than 40 percent of the market share for luxury sports cars in the United States. 2018 has been pretty decent so far too, with more than 7,000 Corvettes manufactured or or‐ dered and scheduled for production. The most popular exterior colors are Watkins Glen Gray, Arctic White, and Black – though if you’ve got your heart set on that particular gray, then you want to pick up a 2018 Corvette because the color is being retired in 2019 in favor of Shadow Gray. Of course, you can always wrap it to whatever color you want, which is still very popular as well.

2019 Updates

Corvette oil changes will be a little different starting with the 2019 model. All of these new models will come filled from the factory with 0W‐40 synthetic oil. This means that you don’t need an oil change between road driving and track days.

Many of the models are also getting new accessories to play with. A new performance air intake will be available for LT1, LT4, and LT5 engines, and a new accessory rocker kit will be available for just shy of $900 for the Stingray and Z51 models. New calibration upgrades for the Magnetic Ride Control suspension system will also be available.

The new Corvette ZR1 pace car for the Indy 500 was also revealed, though it was joked that it’s the only pace car that will stay on the track and just go on to win the race.

One announcement that is suspiciously absent from the Corvette Semi‐ nar is any news on the new C8 mid‐engine Corvette that we’ve been speculating about for a few years now. A test version of this model was spotted in March in Colorado, sporting plenty of camo plastic and a flat‐top steering wheel, according to spy photos, but Chevy is playing this one close to the chest so there’s no telling when we might get an official announcement.

Even without the mid‐engine Corvette announcement, this year’s Corvette seminar gave us plenty to chew on while we wait for the new model year to start showing up at our local dealerships. You can take a look at the whole seminar presentation here —  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIjxurWmPUU — including all the questions that hosts Tadge Juechter and Harlan Charles answered after the presentation came to a close. Learn Directly from Andy Pilgrim by Andy Bolig (CorvetteOnline.com) Sun., May 13 | We recently reported that long‐time and Cadillac factory driver Andy Pilgrim has joined the NCM Motorsports Park as a full‐time team member and Andy wasted no time in bringing his expertise to those inter‐ ested in becoming a better driver.

Andy has a passion for teaching new drivers how to be safer drivers and of course, he’s a motorsport enthusiast, so he’s always seeking to hone his craft and share his experience with other enthusiasts looking to do the same. The National Corvette Museum has just announced that Andy Pilgrim will be offering one‐on‐one sessions with enthusiasts that include private track time at the NCM Motorsports Park. Sessions will be limited to up to two drivers per day and will include Andy setting a data lap and giving the trainee valuable takeaway information and analysis via VBOX.

Both one, and two‐day sessions are available. Lunch is included on both one and two‐day sessions, and dinner is included on the first of the two‐day sessions. The cost is $3,000 for one day in your car or $5,500 for two days in your car. Use one of the NCM Motorsports’ car for $6,000 for one day and $11,000 for two days.

...With a mission of helping drivers of all ages and skill levels become more proficient behind the wheel, Andy Pilgrim brings his years of experience and expertise to new drivers and those seeking to hone their skills. This opportunity has been made available solely through the great working relationship between the Corvette Museum and the NCM Motorsports Park. Contact Matt Busby for information at 270‐467‐8802 or email him at [email protected].

Thanks to a supportive Corvette community that values the brand’s history, Bowling Green has become the hub for all things Corvette. Corvette faithful can interact with the brand’s colorful history at the Museum, watch history in the making at the only Corvette Assembly Plant, located directly across the road from the NCM and Motorsports Park (once assembly plant tours resume) and now enthusiasts can enjoy one‐on‐one insights by one of Corvette Racing’s Hall of Fame members. The resin surely runs deep in the Kentucky countryside.

ZR1 Fastest at NCM Motorsports Park by Andy Bolig (CorvetteOnline.com) Tue., May 15 | Snow‐shovels have finally given way to hot‐shoes in Bowling Green, Kentucky and the NCM Motorsports Park’s own Andy Pilgrim has just set the record for the fastest production car around the NMP’s track wielding a 2019 ZR1 Corvette. Located in Corvette’s home town, the NCM Motorsports Park is located adjacent to the Corvette Assembly Plant and the National Corvette Museum.

While the Motorsports Park’s track is open to any make and model of auto, holding the honor is a testament to the labors of those local to the area and the teams in Detroit who have forged Corvette into the world‐renowned perform‐ ance benchmark it has become. It’s only fitting that it holds the record‐setting lap time on its home track.

ZR1 at NMP Coninued...

(Continued from page 16)

The 2019 ZR‐1 has done an astonishing 2:05.59 around the Grand Full, 3.15‐mile configuration, even to the astonishment of a seasoned veteran racer such as Andy. “I knew the new ZR1 was quick from my first drive at the Media Launch at . Setting a production car lap record on OE tires at MSP by turning a 2:05.59 lap, let me know just how quick,” he said.

Of course, a blazingly‐fast car does not a record make and to pilot the new ZR1 into the record books, the NCM Motorsport Park team only needed to go down the hallway to their in‐house hot‐shoe, Andy Pilgrim. Driving fast Corvettes has been common for Andy for several generations. He was one of the first factory drivers chosen by Corvette Racing when they decided to head out into competition.

At Speed with Leno in a 2019 ZR1 by Harrison Noble (CorvetteOnline.com) Mon., May 21 | What can be said about the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 that hasn’t already been said before? By now, you know Chevro‐ let’s most venerable Corvette to‐date has a top speed of more than 200 mph and makes the most horsepower of any road‐going produc‐ tion ‘Vette ever produced.

Accomplishments such as those can be attributed to the C7 ZR1’s robust powerplant; an all‐new 6.2‐liter supercharged LT5 V8 which produces more than 755 horsepower and 715 lb‐ft of torque, as well as an 8L90E eight‐speed automatic transmission. Combined with the notion that the C7 ZR1 uses the most carbon fiber of any production Corvette produced before it, and you’ve got the recipe for a supercar ‘Vette that rivals cars more than twice its price.

One thing that Jay Leno notes . . . is that the C7 Corvette ZR1 isn’t only the fastest on the strip; it’s also the fastest Cor‐ vette on the road course, too. Shad Balch, Corvette Product Specialist for GM, explains how the C7 ZR1 has some of the most road course‐going aerodynamics of any production Corvette ever produced.

“It’s one thing to get a car to go that speed,” Balch details. “It’s a whole other composition to get it to stick to the ground. With this aero package actually at full speed, there are more than 950 pounds of downforce on top of this car to keep it sticking to the ground.”

It’s obvious that the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 has a lot going for it, but is it safe to call the Corvette a supercar now? We think so. Watch the video at  https://youtu.be/hFwfSZDvUCw. Allentown Area Corvette Club Page 18 ‘Vetter’s Letter | Vol. 25, Iss. 6 | June 2018

NCM News & Events Continued... Chevrolet Racing: Louis to LeMans May 24 | Beginning June 11, the Museum’s Exhibit Hall will once again be transformed to feature a special themed display. For a period of about seven months, that theme is Chevrolet racing history. The story of Chevrolet racing will be told from the early days of Louis Chevrolet as a racing driver for Buick, through the AMA ban on racing, to Chevrolet Racing’s involvement in NASCAR, to the Le Mans winning Corvettes. Significant stories will be told through the display of various cars and artifacts, from engines including one from a C5‐R, and a fuel injec‐ tion cutaway, to race suits, trophies from various races and more. The exhibit will run until January 4, 2019.

Chevrolet Finishes 1-2 in 102nd Indianapolis 500 Jun. 01 | Chevrolet claimed its 10th Indianapolis 500 victory dating to 1988 when Rick Mears won from the pole for Team Penske. Since its return to Verizon IndyCar Series competition in 2012 with the 2.2‐liter twin‐turbocharged, direct injected V‐6 engine, Team Chevy has posted three 1‐2 finishes.

“I can’t describe it. I feel like collapsing. I want to cry. I was wondering if I would ever win it and thoughts went through my mind during the month,” said Power, who in 10 previous starts came closest to winning in 2015 with a runner‐up finish to fellow Team Chevy driver . “This was the last box to tick, but I’m not done.”

Second place Ed Carpenter, who secured his third Indy 500 pole in a Chevrolet in the past six years, led a field‐high 65 laps in the No. 20 Fuzzy’s Vodka Chevrolet for his namesake team. His previous best finish was fifth in 2008.
