QUESTIONS FOR QUINN

Questions? E-mail [email protected]

Q: Since I’ve been in college I’ve spent almost all of my savings! I don’t have a job and my credit card debt just keeps growing. Can you give me some advice on how to handle my debt?

A: Credit card debt is something that a lot of college student have to deal with and unfortunately they usually learn the hard way what not to do. Credit cards should be used for emergencies or only for gas for your car, etc.; they are not a source of free money. Make sure that you only spend money that you have, so you can it pay back. The most important thing that you need to do is face your debt problem; don’t just push it aside because the longer you ignore it the larger the problem will become. Set aside some time to gather up all of your bills and statements so that you can look at the damage. It is very important that you continue making your monthly payments even if it is not in full. This shows that you are not just ignoring your payment, and if you are unable to make any sort of payment at all, be sure that you call your credit card com- pany and let them know when you plan on making the payment. It is very important to keep your credit card company informed. Make this time for your money a monthly ritual and very soon you will start to see your debt decline.

Q: I’m really upset because my best friends since I was in grade school have slowly drifted away from me this year. We went to college and they started drinking almost everyday. I don’t drink and I feel like all my friends don’t want to hang out with me anymore because I don’t drink with them. What can I do to gain their friendship back?

A: If your friends don’t want to hang out with you because of your choice in beverages then you need to start thinking about whether or not you want to be their friends. Your friends should accept you for who you are. Just because you don’t drink doesn’t mean that you can’t still hang out with them; you are still allowed to hang out with your friends whether you drink vodka or grape juice. You should also think about how you treat them when they are drinking. Make sure that you aren’t judging them, instead of the other way around because that could also play a part in your falling out. Nobody likes being judged whether it’s because they don’t drink or they do.
