DOCUMENT RESUME ED 442 143 CS 510 330 AUTHOR Henry, Mallika TITLE The Player and the Playing: AA Interpretive Study of Richard Courtney's Texts on Learning through Drama. PUB DATE 1999-00-00 NOTE 411p.; Doctoral dissertation, School of Education, New York University. PUB TYPE Dissertations/Theses Doctoral Dissertations (041) EDRS PRICE MFO1 /PC17 Plus Postage. DESCRIPTORS *Drama; *Learning Processes; Metaphors; Qualitative Research; *Scholarship ABSTRACT Using qualitative and interpretive methodologies, this dissertation analyzed Richard Courtney's writings to interpret his basic ideas on learning through drama. It focused on later writings (1989, 1990, 1995, 1997) in which Courtney distilled ideas he had been working on for as many as 30 years. It approached Courtney's texts using dramatistic metaphors which concretized his predominantly abstract writings. These metaphors focused on finding the basic elements of a drama: the setting, the act, the actor, and the Other. Through the lenses afforded by these metaphors, the thesis examined Courtney's wide-ranging, eclectic and often imprecise ideas to distill major themes. Courtney used notions like metaphor, symbol, ritual, Being, mind, perspective, oscillation and quaternity with apparently shifting definitions and loosely circumscribed meanings. It collected and analyzed Courtney's meanings recursively, both distilling Courtney's meanings and expanding them through concrete hypothetical examples. Courtney wrote about drama in abstract terms, using notions he had garnered from other disciplines to describe the process of learning through drama. The final construction that emerged in this dissertation represents the experience of the actor/learner: it is concentric, radiating from a nub which represents the feelings and imagination of the actor.

Washington, Suite 500, Chicago, Illinois 60602 TEL (312) 603-0996 FAX (312) 603-9788 WEB cookcountyclerk.com Dear Friends: The March 15, 2016 Presidential Primary shattered modern-day records going back more than 25 years. The popularity of initiatives such as Online Voter Registration and Election Day Registration, as well as registration and voting for 17-year-olds, proved there is a great desire by voters to take part in the electoral process. This was the first presidential election to include Election Day Registration and voting by 17-year- olds who will be 18-years-old by the General Election – offerings we found to be very popular with suburban Cook County voters. This 2016 Presidential Primary Post-Election Report takes a comprehensive look at the voting totals, trends and statistics during the March primary throughout suburban Cook County. Below is a sample size of the standout primary numbers: • Voting before Election Day – by mail, or during early voting and grace period voting – accounted for 22 percent of all ballots cast in this election. • Early Voting set a new primary record with 113,641 ballots cast in a Presidential Primary. • More than 23,000 suburban Cook County voters took advantage of Election Day Registration. • Nearly 4,400 17-year-olds voted, accounting for 62 percent of the 7,085 who registered to vote. • Donald Trump won 25 of the 30 Suburban Cook County Townships, garnering his best total in Stickney Township, with 62.1 percent of the vote. • Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders were separated by just nine votes in Norwood Park Township (Clinton: 1,859; Sanders: 1,850).

Tel: 0800 0966 825 (UK only) Tel: +44 (0)1329 828438 (outside UK) Email: [email protected] Feeling Fabulous..... We are feeling “fabulous” after our role in the production of a major British comedy film. Intonation was asked to translate a few lines of script into languages as diverse as Japanese, Swedish and the Nigerian language of Yoruba for the Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie. The British Film Industry (BFI) has announced Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie was the highest grossing independent UK film of 2016, with box office takings hitting £16 million! The film is based on the BBC TV comedy series and charts the further adventures of fast-living, but now ageing, duo Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone, played by Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley. It also features supermodel Kate Moss. Intonation’s Commercial Director Dan Peachey said: “It was a slightly unusual request but when we learned what it was for, we didn’t hesitate to accept the job, as we’re such big fans of the show!” “We watched the film through and it seems our words were used in a TV news report that went global, on a multi screen with loads of languages at the same time.” said Dan. “Trust and confidentiality are just as integral to the high standards we work to and as part of the confidentiality agreement with our client, we couldn’t say anything about the film or our part in it until it was released earlier this month, but we’re very excited to have played a part in its production and made sure we had an office outing to see if we made the cut” he added.
