Lady Thatcher Celebrated Her 80Th Birthday Last
LADY THATCHER CELEBRATED HER 80TH BIRTHDAY LAST NIGHT WITH 650 GUESTS Andrew Pierce reports The Times Friday, October 14, 2005 BARONESS THATCHER had the perfect excuse to be a little late last night for her 80th birthday party in the presence of the Queen, Tony Blair and some unlikely names from the show-business world. She was delayed by an unexpected telephone call from President Bush wishing her a happy birthday. The ten- minute call from the White House was the latest in a series of tributes that poured in from around the world. It marked yet another highlight in the life of a woman who still casts a huge shadow over the Conservative Party. The red carpet was rolled out for Lady Thatcher, who was dressed in a navy blue cocktail coat and silk chiffon dress designed by Camilla Milton. Lady Thatcher, who looked frail, made no public comment as a crowd of wellwishers lined the streets to catch a glimpse of Britain's first woman Prime Minister. The 650-strong guest list was a roll call of honour from the 1980s Thatcher heyday. Michael Portillo, who was once seen as her anointed heir, made a surprise appearance. He said: "She was influential in her day but not now." But the former Prime Minister also sprinkled the list with some surprise names from both sides of the political divide. The Queen, in a shimmering silver dress, the Duke of Edinburgh, and the Prime Minister were the principal guests at the drinks party in the gold-embossed ballroom of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Hyde Park, in Knightsbridge. -

Pan Macmillan November 2020 Highlights SUPERLEAD Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man Emmanuel Acho 12th November Racism is not a virus of the body; it is a virus of the mind, and unfortunately, it can be lethal. But you cannot fix a problem that you do not know you have. And if “ignorance is bliss”, in this case, your bliss has caused bondage and pain for others. But there is a fix. We can all access the life-saving medicine that will cure the world’s most ailing, long-lasting pandemic. And in order to access it, we’re going to have to have some uncomfortable conversations. The goal of Uncomfortable Conversations with a Black Man is to help guide and have the hard conversations about race that many white people are too afraid to have. But enough is enough – the times are clearly changing, and more people are open to removing the excuses and barriers for why we’ve never had these conversations. I want this book to provide a safe and empowering space for curious white people to answer the questions they’ve always had but have been too nervous to ask. Like, “How can I have white privilege if I’m not wealthy?” ”, or “is racial profiling ok if black people tend to commit more crimes”, or my personal favorite from a 19-year-old girl from rural Alabama named Amy who asked, “if black people can say the ‘N’ word, why can’t I?” And many, many more. • ISBN: 9781529064070 • Format: Trade Paperback • Genre: Non-Fiction • Extent: TBC • Price: R330,00 LOCAL A Family Affair Sue Nyathi This novel is set in the 2000s in Bulawayo in Zimbabwe and follows the lives of the Mafu family. -

1-5 High Street: a Short History in This Edition
Issue 27 | Trinity Term 2019 Banking on the future Brasenose College is delighted to announce that it has purchased 1-5 High Street, Oxford, known to many as Lloyds Bank who currently rent the space. The Governing Body, advised by the Investment Advisory Committee, secured the property in Michaelmas Term 2018. John Bowers QC, Principal, said: “We are thrilled to have procured such an important building in the heart of Oxford. We have a proud history as a resident of Oxford’s High Street; this purchase expands our stewardship to another significant building, which will provide sound investment returns. I encourage all alumni who visit Oxford to reacquaint themselves with 1-5 High Street to experience its significance and prominence first hand.” In the immediate future, Lloyds remain as tenants. In the medium term, the College will consider adapting the upper floors for accommodation for our students. About one third of our endowment is invested in property. The College’s Investment Advisory Committee consists of five alumni with significant expertise – Nigel Wightman (PPE, 1971), Chair, David Watts (Engineering Science & Economics, 1968), Charles Scott (Jurisprudence, 1976), Gerald Smith (Philosophy, 1984), and Mark Boulton (Chemistry, 1984) – and also the Principal, Bursar and two academic Fellows. The College is very grateful for the commitment and experience of the alumni on the committee. The College is also grateful to James Del Favero (Engineering Science, 1978), who helped the College secure the purchase of the building during L-R: Nigel Wightman (PPE, 1971), Phil Parker, the Bursar, and the final stages of negotiations with a generous donation. -

Chapter 7 YOUR OWN PERSONAL JUDAS: THE REHABILITATION OF JEFFREY ARCHER 1. Thou Shalt Not Get Caught Despite Thatcherism-without-Thatcher becoming the political norm by the mid-1990s, this period would simultaneously mark a decline of the Conservative Party in British politics, and in no small part due to the ‘toxic’ image that Thatcher had come to represent. Thatcher was brought down in 1990 by a combination of her confrontational style of running cabinet, Michael Heseltine’s leadership ambitions, the long-serving Geoffrey Howe’s devastating resignation speech, and the deeply unpopu- lar Poll Tax. Her apparently consensual replacement, John Major, had surprisingly managed to win the 1992 General Election outright, but it would be downhill for the Tories from then on. The issue of Europe and the EU was ripping the party apart while, among other things, the BSE crisis, recession, and political ‘sleaze’ all but made a crushing defeat in the 1997 election inevitable and one from which they have only just (about) recovered. -
