Smith tied his career high with 10 strikeouts while not allowing an earned run as he defeated the Islanders 5-3 to open the weekend series. The junior right-hander from Midland, Texas (Midland Christian), pitched seven innings while allowing just four hits and one walk to earn his first victory of the season. He also lowered his season ERA to 2.63.

Big Win Texas State handed No. 16 Baylor its worst loss in two seasons as the Bobcats defeated the Bears, 13-2, in Waco on March 1. The win for Texas State was its fourth in the last six meetings against Baylor.
