2012 Season Notebook BY THE NUMBERS • The Ragin’ Cajuns enter their 18th season under the direction of head coach Tony Robichaux. The Ruston right-hander was 5-2 last season with a team-leading 2.51 ERA. In the final month of the 2011 regular season Nicholson posted a 2-0 record with a 1.99 ERA in 22 2/3 innings and held opponents to a .195 average. 7 • Joe Zimmermann, who started in four Sun Belt series, could get a look at one of the two Jordan Nicholson led the Cajuns pitching staff remaining spots in the rotation. He allowed only one run in five-plus innings against FAU and WKU, but gave up five runs in three innings at FIU and lasted only two innings vs. South Alabama. • Key returners in the bullpen include Matt Hicks and Caleb Kellogg, a pair of sophomore 13-7 who saw valuable playing time as freshman last year. The bullpen recorded 22 scoreless appearances out of 52 total appearances (42%) and worked four-plus innings 23 times. 14 • A key cog to replace in the bullpen is Joey Satriano (this season’s volunteer coach). The Ragin’ Cajuns welcome 14 newcomers (8 Satriano made 21 relief appearances after returning to the bullpen following the Cal freshmen, 6 JUCOs) to the 2012 squad Baseball Classic. In two seasons as a Cajun, he made 48 appearances (44 in relief). • Both catchers return off last season’s squad in Michael Strentz and Chris Sinclair. The duo combined to throw out 23 baserunners attempting to steal and limited opponents to just 72 stolen base attempts (58 games). 16 • Chase Compton is expected to take over at first base. He will probably need to improve his offensive numbers (.227 average, 3 extra base hits) to maintain a spot in the lineup. • The middle infield positions are up for grabs with the departure of seniors Jordan Poirrier 20 (2B) and Greg Fontenot (SS). True freshmen Jace Conrad, Cord Cockrell and Logan Jordan Nicholson surrendered the fewest Preston are prime candidates to fill these two spots. • Veteran Tyler Frederick, who started at first base last season until injury limited him late earned runs (20) amongst all SBC starting pitchers in 2011 in the season, should find a spot in the lineup whether its middle infield or third base. Frederick started 45 games at third base in 2010. • Lots of question marks abound in the outfield where all three starters (Mike Petello, Alex Fuselier and Matt Goulas) are gone. Brian Bowman and Daniel Nichols are the 23 veterans of the group, but will be pushed a talented group of newcomers.
