Key Concepts for Future QIS Learners Workshop output published online May 13, 2020 Background and Overview On behalf of the Interagency Working Group on Workforce, Industry and Infrastructure, under the NSTC Subcommittee on Quantum Information Science (QIS), the National Science Foundation invited 25 researchers and educators to come together to deliberate on defining a core set of key concepts for future QIS learners that could provide a starting point for further curricular and educator development activities. The deliberative group included university and industry researchers, secondary school and college educators, and representatives from educational and professional organizations. The workshop participants focused on identifying concepts that could, with additional supporting resources, help prepare secondary school students to engage with QIS and provide possible pathways for broader public engagement. This workshop report identifies a set of nine Key Concepts. Each Concept is introduced with a concise overall statement, followed by a few important fundamentals. Connections to current and future technologies are included, providing relevance and context. The first Key Concept defines the field as a whole. Concepts 2-6 introduce ideas that are necessary for building an understanding of quantum information science and its applications. Concepts 7-9 provide short explanations of critical areas of study within QIS: quantum computing, quantum communication and quantum sensing. The Key Concepts are not intended to be an introductory guide to quantum information science, but rather provide a framework for future expansion and adaptation for students at different levels in computer science, mathematics, physics, and chemistry courses. As such, it is expected that educators and other community stakeholders may not yet have a working knowledge of content covered in the Key Concepts. -

More specifically, we analyze the performance of a quantum interferometer submerged in different types of oceanic water. Because of the strong optical attenuation produced by even the clearest ocean waters, the supersensitivity range of an underwater quantum sensor using N = 2 NOON entangled states is severely limited to about 18 meters, while the advantage provided by entanglement disappears at about 30 meters. As a consequence, long-range underwater quantum sensing is not feasible. Nevertheless, we discuss how underwater quantum sensing could be relevant for the detection of underwater vehicles. Resumen En este articulo exploramos la posibilidad de deteccion´ cuantica´ subacuatica.´ En particular, analizamos el comportamiento de un interferometro cuantico´ sumergido en diferentes tipos de aguas oceanicas.´ Debido a la fuerte atenuacion´ optica´ producida por aguas oceanicas,´ incluso las mas´ puras, el rango de super- sensitividad de un detector cuantico´ subacuatico´ usando estados NOON con N = 2 esta´ severamente limitado a una profundidad de 18 metros, mientras que la ventaja debida a los estados entrelazados desaparece a unos 30 metros. OLATUNJI University of Massachusetts CRAIG N. SAWCHUK University of Washington School of Medicine Emotions have been a long–standing cornerstone of research in social and clinical psychology. Although the systematic examination of emotional processes has yielded a rather comprehensive theoretical and scientific literature, dramatically less empirical attention has been devoted to disgust. In the present article, the na- ture, experience, and other associated features of disgust are outlined. We also re- view the domains of disgust and highlight how these domains have expanded over time. The function of disgust in various social constructions, such as cigarette smoking, vegetarianism, and homophobia, is highlighted. Disgust is also becoming increasingly recognized as an influential emotion in the onset, maintenance, and treatment of various phobic states, Obsessive–Compulsive Disorder, and eating disorders. In comparison to the other emotions, disgust offers great promise for fu- ture social and clinical research efforts, and prospective studies designed to improve our understanding of disgust are outlined. The nature, structure, and function of emotions have a rich tradition in the social and clinical psychology literature (Cacioppo & Gardner, 1999). About Emotions There are 8 primary emotions. You are born with these emotions wired into your brain. That wiring causes your body to react in certain ways and for you to have certain urges when the emotion arises. Here is a list of primary emotions: Eight Primary Emotions Anger: fury, outrage, wrath, irritability, hostility, resentment and violence. Sadness: grief, sorrow, gloom, melancholy, despair, loneliness, and depression. Fear: anxiety, apprehension, nervousness, dread, fright, and panic. Joy: enjoyment, happiness, relief, bliss, delight, pride, thrill, and ecstasy. Interest: acceptance, friendliness, trust, kindness, affection, love, and devotion. Surprise: shock, astonishment, amazement, astound, and wonder. Disgust: contempt, disdain, scorn, aversion, distaste, and revulsion. Shame: guilt, embarrassment, chagrin, remorse, regret, and contrition. All other emotions are made up by combining these basic 8 emotions. Sometimes we have secondary emotions, an emotional reaction to an emotion. We learn these. Some examples of these are: o Feeling shame when you get angry. o Feeling angry when you have a shame response (e.g., hurt feelings). o Feeling fear when you get angry (maybe you’ve been punished for anger). There are many more. These are NOT wired into our bodies and brains, but are learned from our families, our culture, and others. When you have a secondary emotion, the key is to figure out what the primary emotion, the feeling at the root of your reaction is, so that you can take an action that is most helpful. . -

Modeling, and the computers that enable it, are central to the field, but the role of modeling is often misunderstood. Models are not intended to capture fully the processes they attempt to elucidate. Rather, they are explorations of ideas about the nature of cognitive processes. As explorations, simplification is essential – it is only through simplification that we can fully understand the implications of the ideas. This is not to say that simplification has no downsides; it does, and these are discussed. I then consider several contemporary frameworks for cognitive modeling, stressing the idea that each framework is useful in its own particular ways. Increases in computer power (by a factor of about 4 million) since 1958 have enabled new modeling paradigms to emerge, but these also depend on new ways of thinking. Will new paradigms emerge again with the next 1,000-fold increase? 1. Automated Face Analysis (AFA) for detection, synthesis, and understanding of facial expression is a vital focus of basic research. While open research questions remain, the field has become sufficiently mature to support initial applications in a variety of areas. We review 1) human-observer based approaches to measurement that inform AFA; 2) advances in face detection and tracking, feature extraction, registration, and supervised learning; and 3) applications in action unit and intensity detection, physical pain, psychological distress and depression, detection of deception, interpersonal coordination, expression transfer, and other applications. We consider user-in-the-loop as well as fully automated systems and discuss open questions in basic and applied research. In particular, it points to the web of mutual dependence among the elements of a cognitive ecosystem. At least three fields were taking a deeply ecological approach to cognition thirty years ago: Gibson’s ecological psychology, Bateson’s ecology of mind, and Soviet cultural-historical activity theory. The ideas developed in those projects have now found a place in modern views of embodied, situated, distributed cognition. As cognitive theory continues to shift from units of analysis defined by inherent properties of the elements to units defined in terms of dynamic patterns of correlation across elements, the study of cognitive ecosystems will become an increasingly important part of cognitive science. Serena Hughes Case Study Spring 2019 The Rising Field of Bioinformatics Overview. Bioinformatics is an up-and-coming field within the intersection of biology and computer science. Biology and computer science were initially thought of separately, but with technological advances it soon became clear that there was an overlap where computer science algorithms could be used to further biological discoveries and biological systems could be used as a basis for computational models. The growth of research combining the two has led to the recent growth of the field of bioinformatics. Currently, bioinformatics is still relatively small, often housed as a specialization of biology, computer science, or other departments at universities. In 2009, only approximately 17% of bioinformatics programs were part of a bioinformatics department, with most programs being housed under biology or biomedical departments.[7] While it has been ten years since this data was collected, even in 2018 U.S. News’ ranking of bioinformatics programs included only 6 schools total.[11] Bioinformatics is a small and growing field, so the importance of the organization of bioinformatics is also growing. What is Being Organized? Bioinformatics has become increasingly interdisciplinary as it has grown, building on other scientific and mathematical fields. These subfields and the types of research they enable are the resources being organized. In organizing these resources, we will shed light on the structure of the field of bioinformatics as a whole. Why is it Being Organized? The term “bioinformatics” has been in use since the 1970s. Around that time, bioinformatics was “defined as the study of informatic processes in biotic systems”.
