I certainly had never heard of him upon my visit to the Smithsonian Institution in the fall of 2002. When I met archivist Kristine Kaske at the National Air and Space Museum Library, I had only a vague conception that my topic was early aviation in the United States. With her help, I identified Beachey as a case study worthy of exploration. She and the other archivists at the Air and Space Museum and Garber facility were indispensable in my search for primary materials on the obscure aviator. Aviation historian Carroll Gray was also extremely helpful in my search for sources on the elusive Beachey. Her own book on the aviator is forthcoming. I would like to thank my advisors, professors Paul Jefferson and Emma Lapsansky, for showing genuine interest in my topic. They challenged me to recognize the full potential of this project.
