Dylan Thomas’: a Review of a New CD Set
June 2005 an extract from “In Tune” The Quarterly Newsletter from the Oxford Welsh Male Voice Choir ‘The Essential Dylan Thomas’: A review of a new CD set. A few weeks ago I met Nicholas Soames of Naxos Audiobooks and we talked about Dylan Thomas. He told me about Naxos’ 4 CD package - NA 434312 of Dylan Thomas’s work and he sent me one as a present. I thought I’d share what I thought of it with the readers of In Tune as you may have more interest than most in Dylan. Four CD’s - almost five hours long, including a recording of “Under Milk Wood”, narrated by Richard Burton, made on January 24th 1954 , only two months after Dylan had died. This takes most of the first two CDs. This recording is as good as it can ever get: I have a copy of it on an LP, but it’s pretty scratchy and hissy. The CDs don’t have these intrusions. Note for the choir: Philip Burton played Eli Jenkins – he was Richard Burton’s adopted father and teacher and they were both very close to Dylan – Eli Jenkins’ prayer has the line ‘ please to keep Thy lovely eye’ – rather than ‘loving eye’ – when did it change to ‘loving’? – and in such a different intonation to the way the OWMVC sing it - if historical veracity is of any interest perhaps we should have a listen to this. It was ‘lovely’ in the screenplay published by JM Dent and in the 1971 Andrew Sinclair film with Richard Burton, Ryan Davies with Angharad Rees as Gossamer Beynon? – when Rosie Probert was played by someone else who was fairly famous (clue: she also starred in some other roles with Richard Burton). -

Thomas grew up in Wales, and he often suggested that his fascination with the sounds of the English language derived from this Welshness. In this thesis, however, I argue that he was a poet first, a performer second, and a Welshman third. Thomas fell in love with the sounds of words from an early age. His ear for the English language lies at the heart of everything that he wrote. Thomas's early poetry makes considerable use of bold, aggressive sounds. By Death~ and Entrances, however, he is able to use and explore the many subtleties and nuances of language as a musical medium. When Thomas reads his own work, these musical qualities are amplified and fully projected. Under Milk Wood, his play for voices, is probably the best example of Thomas's ability to create pictures, and evoke feelings, through sound. By the end of his life, his writings had indeed become an illumination of music. In this thesis, I set out to show exactly how this came about, and to explore the relationship between Thomas's writing and music. -

23rd November 2013 – 16th March 2014 National Museum Cardiff Learning Resource Pack The Exhibition Llareggub: Peter Blake illustrates Dylan Thomas’s Under Milk Wood presents a literary masterpiece by a renowned Welsh poet through the eyes of one of Britain’s most famous living visual artists. It is a unique exhibition of artwork created by Blake that illustrates almost every aspect of Thomas’s famous ‘Play for Voices’. It has been twenty eight years since Blake started this ambitious project and the exhibition also marks 100 years since Dylan Thomas’s birth. ‘LLareggub’ forms part of a year long, nation-wide, Welsh government sponsored festival Dylan Thomas 100. This educators’ pack is designed to support teachers and other educators. It includes support in planning a visit, exploring the exhibition and suggestions for follow-up work. This exhibition can be particularly linked to Art and Design, English and Curriculum Cymreig. The activity suggestions are targeted primarily at Key Stage 2 and 3 pupils but these could be adapted for older or younger students. This pack is intended as a private resource and is for educational purposes only.
