In 1952, the Netherlands joined the competition and an international movement was born. The very first Olympic style Games for athletes with a disability were organized in Rome in 1960. In Toronto in 1976, other disability groups, other than spinal cord injuries, were added and the idea of merging various disability groups for international sport competitions began. In the same year, the first Paralympic Winter Games took place in Sweden. Today, the Paralympics are elite sport events for athletes from six different disability groups.

O Brasil não participou desta edição dos Jogos Paralímpicos. 1972 – HEIDELBERG A 4ª edição dos Jogos Paralímpicos foi realizada no período de 02 a 11 de agosto de 1972, na cidade de Heidelberg (Alemanha). Essa foi a primeira participação brasileira nos Jogos, contando com apenas 20 atletas na delegação, sendo todos homens. O Brasil não conquistou medalhas, dentro das quatro modalidades que participou. 1976 – TORONTO A 5ª edição dos Jogos Paralímpicos foi realizada no período de 04 a 12 de agosto de 1976, na cidade de Toronto (Canadá). Prata - Lawn Bowls, Luiz Carlos da Costa e Robson Sampaio de Almeida (dupla masculina) O Brasil conquistou a primeira medalha brasileira nos Jogos Paralímpicos. Essa medalha garantiu ao país a 31ª colocação no ranking final dos Jogos. Curiosamente, o pódio inédito foi alcançado pelo pioneiro do movimento Paralímpico no Brasil. Robson Sampaio de Almeida foi o responsável por trazer para o país, em 1958, o esporte como meio de reabilitação, ao lado de Aldo Miccolis, quando fundaram o Clube do Otimismo no Rio de Janeiro.

Esses resultados fazem com que o Brasil seja visto como uma potência paralímpica mundial. A mídia pode contribuir para a permanência do país nesse status, não somente na visibilidade de grandes atletas, mas também para que mais pessoas conheçam o esporte paralímpico e sejam encorajadas a ingressar no esporte. Assim, esse ensaio tem o objetivo de refletir a respeito da influência da mídia na criação e construção dos ídolos paralímpicos brasileiros desde os anos 2000 até os Jogos Paralímpicos do Rio de Janeiro em 2016.
