Iowa Poultry Association and Iowa Egg Council are honored with the Best of Show Award at the Iowa State Fair

4 Greetings from the President 2019 was a great year for Iowa Poultry Association, as we celebrated our 90th anniversary. We branched out, trying new things, expanding our involvement in legislative issues, increasing our media and grassroots exposure, and increasing our membership numbers.

We held our second annual Issues Conference, and despite the record-breaking low temperatures, it was a great success. The following Day on the Hill allowed over 30 members to have one-on-one meetings with their legislators and leadership, representing Iowa Poultry at the Capitol.

The new webinar series addresses timely industry topics for our members, and the recording posted to the website allows our members to catch the webinars, if they cannot watch them live. Our member directory and resource guide has been a great tool for our members to reach out to each other, and to government agencies, if needed. We’ve continued the “Member Spotlight” for our members who choose to be highlighted, a Friday favorite for our members, from feedback received.

We organized our first ever concession stand “Cluckin’ Coop” at the Iowa State Fair, earning the title “Best of Show”. We highlighted egg and chicken dishes to fairgoers, and generated hundreds of thousands social media impressions.

I’m incredibly proud of the success of our Emerging Leader Program, graduating our first class, and engaging a second class of emerging leaders in our industry.

The Fall Festival had record attendance, a Nationally known recording artist for entertainment, and the addition of the NPIP annual meeting. Thank you to the committee and the staff for their hard work on this event.

I encourage you to join committees, attend board meetings, and events; our association cannot work without the good people in the poultry community’s support!

Thank you for your support of the Iowa poultry and egg community!

James T. Dean, President Iowa Poultry Association 5 Iowa Poultry Association Year in Review

2019, our 90th year, was a year of celebration and going outside of the box to experiment and experience new things.

In accordance with our mission statement, “Iowa Poultry Association actively raises confidence in the poultry community through leadership, support, advocacy and education,” we continue to work towards the following initiatives:

Leadership •Delivering on a strategic plan which will serve as a blueprint for IPA over the next five years. The plan will guide the board and staff in the coming years. •Graduated our first-ever IPA Emerging Leaders Class; started Class 2 of IPA’s Emerging Leaders – contributing to the growth of future leaders in the Iowa poultry community. •IPA committees are engaging nearly 170 individual IPA members to help IPA become stronger, have a more active membership, and thrive. •Increased our role with involvement with other agriculture groups on initiatives that benefit the poultry community and all of agriculture. •Held our 2nd Annual IPA Issues Conference.

Support •Partnered with Iowa Egg Council, Iowa Egg farmers, and the Iowa poultry community to support a historic Cracking Hunger egg donation program for Iowa Food Banks. •With IDALS, we spearheaded the IA Poultry Disease Response & Emergency Preparedness Committee and co-sponsored an Avian Influenza Workshop •Encouraged Iowa’s poultry producers to work with nutrient management partners to protect the environment while also being good neighbors. •Updated our Iowa Poultry website and enhanced social media outreach to industry stakeholders and policy makers. • Organized our first ever “Cluckin’ Coop” concession stand at the Iowa State Fair, highlighting egg and chicken products to fairgoers. In our first year, our stand was voted as Best in Show and generated hundreds of thousands of media impressions. •Led animal ag groups in joint initiatives around labor & workforce issues; addressing infrastructure improvements in rural Iowa. •Continued to support the direction and initiatives of the Iowa Egg Council.

6 Advocacy •Continued to refine our Policy and Legislative Advocacy process allowing for member input, information sharing and frequent engagement opportunities. This process provides for Fall Policy Meetings, the creation of a legislative priorities booklet, policy positions summary document, position papers, the engagement of the IPA Legislative Committee, and our second Issues Conference. •Stepped outside core poultry industry issues for discussions with policy makers and engaged on issues related to revitalization of rural Iowa, key topics included quality & affordable housing, access to healthcare and childcare, broadband access, quality schools, community activities, and more. •Visited with the entire Iowa Congressional delegation regarding our industry. We shared position papers and specifically addressed key issues related to labor needs, international trade, tax reform, and checkoff rules. •Held IPA’s Day on the Hill where 30+ IPA members met with state lawmakers and represented IPA at the State Capitol. •Lobbied for and gained increased funding for Foreign Animal Disease preparedness at the IDALS. •Supported Senate File 519, also known as Ag Trespass, making it illegal if a person uses deception on a matter that would reasonably result in a denial of access to an agriculture production facility not open to the public, thus protecting our farmers and livestock. •Met with legislators to encourage passage of United States Mexico Canada Agreement (USMCA). Education •Provided critical and relevant updates, including an enhanced member newsletter, and a weekly member spotlight. •Expanded and strengthened our monthly webinar series. Feedback has been tremendous and have addressed critical and timely industry topics. •Partnered with NPIP to assist our members with biosecurity. •The 2019 Fall Festival brought our member education priorities to a new level, including adding new social options and an NPIP Annual meeting to our Fall Festival agenda. •IPA, along with the Iowa Egg Council, has created a 501c3 scholarship foundation, and are realizing our vision for increasing egg and poultry youth scholarships.

If we didn’t have the support of our sponsors, partners, and most importantly, our members, we couldn’t accomplish all that we have, this past year. 2019 was a busy and successful year for Iowa Poultry Association, and we’ve got our sights set perfectly on 2020!

We are entering into our second round of commercial biosecurity policy audits. Since the HPAI Interim Final Rule became official on September 14, 2018, requiring eligible commercial participants to have their biosecurity policy audited, 90% of Iowa producers have completed satisfactory audits. Your first audit must be completed by September 14, 2020. If you have yet to hold your first audit, please contact our office to begin the process. Details may be found at www.poultryimprovement.org. Thank you to all our Iowa producers who take the practice of biosecurity as seriously as it should be to keep disease out of our flocks.

Iowa Poultry Association continues to work on our member’s behalf to improve disease response plans in cooperation with federal and state authorities as well as other commodity groups. Each year the Iowa Poultry Disease Response and Emergency Preparedness (I-PREP) committee meets to discuss our industry and state’s plans with regard to Low and Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza and virulent Newcastle Disease. This year we participated in exercises and workshops to better our response efforts with regard to Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), African Swine Fever (ASF) and Avian Influenza. While both FMD and ASF do not directly infect poultry, state and federal standstill orders for these diseases could certainly impact our industry’s ability to move its products to market and also to move grain to our farms. Please contact us if you are interested in attending exercises like these.

Our communication efforts to small flock producers continue to be enhanced in order to improve our flock’s overall health and biosecurity practices. Newly offered this year are free Avian Influenza PCR testing kits as well as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits. Free AGID egg testing continues to be available to layer flocks of less than 10,000 birds. More information on this offer and more may be found at www.IowaPoultry.com/small-flock-information.

We look forward to providing further education and best practices information in the year ahead! Please contact us for more information or if you have any questions.
