It was my principal supervisor, Peter Tremewan from the School of Languages,
Cultures and Linguistics at the University of Canterbury, who first set me on the road to writing this thesis in far back 2002, when he suggested that a biography of
Garin would make a useful doctoral project. I owe Peter an enormous debt for his dedication to what has been very much a joint project. Peter located and transcribed many of the Garin manuscripts, and I am indebted to him and his wife
Christine for the extensive knowledge that they have contributed to the theoretical underpinnings of this thesis. Peter also provided consistent guidance, feedback and motivation, and I am grateful to have had such a fine supervisor. My thanks similarly go to Peter Low from the School of Languages, Linguistics and
Cultures, for his administrative assistance and his encouragement throughout the project. This thesis too owes much to the earlier work of fellow PhD student
Hélène Serabian. Hélène’s analysis of Garin’s diary recording his missionary work with Maori provided many of the starting points for my ideas, and her careful transcription of the diary has been used throughout this thesis.
Given that my work is based nearly wholly on manuscript documentation,
I owe a large debt to a number of archivists and librarians spread across the globe.
To begin closest to home, my greatest debt is to the Marists, and especially
Brother Gerard Hogg and Ken Scadden of the Marist Archives in Wellington.
Brother Gerard and Ken were unstinting in their efforts to answer my queries, and
I much appreciated the stimulating discussions we had, often over a cup of tea.

Thank you also to Brother Gerard and Father Brian Quin for providing me with a research space for three months while I scoured the archives in my initial search for Garin documentation, and to Father Michael O’Meeghan who was always prepared to offer his advice. Mary de Porres and Jocelyn Butcher at the Wellington Archdiocesan Archives, where much of the material concerning the early Marist bishops is held, and from the Religieuses de Notre Dame des Missions. With respect to national collections, my thanks to the librarians of the Alexander Turnbull Library and the National
Library’s newspaper reading room, and also to Andrea Green of the National
Archives, who patiently explained to me how to use Archway and locate official documents.
Around New Zealand, I received much assistance from Diana Clark of the
St Mary’s Parish Archives, who facilitated a whirlwind tour of Nelson and Garin monuments and memorabilia. My thanks to Diana also for her willingness to send
Garin documentation to Wellington. In Auckland, Marian Nee and Father Bruce
Bolland provided information on the Kaipara mission and the Howick, Panmure and Otahuhu parishes, and the tour that Marian provided through the Pompallier
Centre, with its artefacts of the early missions, deserves special note. Alan La
Roche of the Howick Historical Society also provided crucial documentation on
Garin’s work with the Fencible settlers, while Carol Wills of Good Shepherd
College gave me access to a number of religious books that were not available in other libraries.
Many of the manuscripts have been sourced in Italy and France. My sincere thanks to Padre Carlo Maria Schianchi and his assistant, Gabriella Pierre

Louis, of the Archivi dei Padri Maristi in Rome, who spent countless hours photocopying letters on my behalf, and showed me Garin’s famous letter map. My thanks also to another Marist, Father Charles Girard, for giving me prior access to his ten volume Lettres reçues d’Océanie, where I was able to find a number of new Garin letters in addition to a wealth of early Marist correspondence. The
Archivio Storico di Propaganda Fide also supplied a number of Marist letters; a visit to their beautiful reading room, entirely lined with tomes from centuries past, was a reward in itself. In Lyon, the Œuvres Pontificales Missionnaires, Archives de l’Archevêché de Lyon and Archives Départementales du Rhône revealed a number of new and sometimes unexpected finds. In Bourg en Bresse, I received personal assistance from Jérôme Croyet of the Archives Départementales de l’Ain and from Father Jacques Caille of the Archives de l’Évêché de Belley. Last but certainly not least, Jacqueline Di Carlo provided most of the genealogical information on Garin, and I thank her for her continued support, and for the wonderful tour that she and Soeur Marie Bénédicte Ollivier gave me of Saint
Rambert en Bugey and Domitian’s crypt on a hot July day in 2006.
