Four simple words, really. But together, they represent the guiding principle behind everything we do at United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona. They’ve been at the very heart of our work in the communities that we’ve been privileged to serve for nearly 100 years.

As we approach this Century of Service milestone, we’re mindful of the need to cultivate a common theme that we can uphold together with our many stakeholders across Southern Arizona. This process inspired many conversations with our partners, donors, community leaders and community members of all ages to ensure that our organizational Howard Stewart planning succinctly aligns our United Way with the needs of our 2016-2017 community. And the result was right there. United, we all win. Board Chair We know it’s not always easy to define our United Way or quickly sum up what we do. But that shouldn’t be an obstacle. It’s an opportunity, giving us the context to tell the many impactful stories of the lives that we’ve touched in real ways. We work with more than 200 community partners and nonprofit agencies, engage with hundreds of local companies, offer free tax services to thousands of Southern Arizonans, manage partnerships that collect valuable data that affect educational outcomes and convene dozens of community institutions to change the way we talk about, and handle, end of life care. United, we all win.

Our annual report is the ideal vehicle to present to you and our community this clear message. We recognize that our work spans across all members of our community and all generations: from birth to career, career to retirement, and retirement to the end of life. We know that the building blocks of a thriving community are education, financial stability and health and our role as a community convener enables us Edmund Marquez to unite people, ideas and resources to create a real and sustainable 2016-2017 impact. At United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona, we transform individual lives and bring long-lasting, systematic change to our community by focusing on underlying key issues. We fight for quality education, financial stability and healthy communities for every person, in every stage of life, in Tucson and Southern Arizona. United Way improves educational and life outcomes for children, youth and young adults from Birth to Career, by advancing equity and excellence in education. Every step in a child’s life lays the foundation for future success.

The work of our partnerships focuses on the following key priorities: kindergarten readiness, early grade reading, middle school math, high school graduation, post-secondary enrollment, post-secondary completion and career attainment.

06. MEET DANITZA

United Way supports several programs aimed at getting children ready to be successful in school and beyond. Each year, those programs help tens of thousands here in Southern Arizona, including 5-year-old Danitza.

Danitza was born with a condition commonly known as Brittle Bone Disease. Even the slightest bump, slip or fall can turn into a hospital visit and oftentimes, extensive surgery. Her parents desperately wanted to raise healthy and well-educated children and didn’t want little Danitza to fall behind her peers. Fortunately, someone told her mother, Damaris, about the United Way-funded program, Parents as Teachers. Her Parent Educator, Veronica, worked with Damaris on age-appropriate activities that would prepare Danitza for kindergarten. Since it is likely that she will miss school due to her disease, having strong communication, critical thinking and motor skills is vital for Danitza’s future. Veronica also helped Danitza’s parents set goals for their children, benchmarks to keep them on track to succeed in life. Damaris says they’ve met every single one of them! Most recently, they graduated from the Parents as Teachers program and because of that, little Danitza started kindergarten and she loves it! Her parents say they could not have done it without the help of the Parents as Teachers program and United Way. 07. FINANCIAL STABILITY

United Way’s Financial Stability programs support hard-working, low-wage earners in our community from Career to Retirement. Programs and partnerships are focused on improving employment and financial security for life-long well-being.

The VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program provides free tax preparation to households earning up to $66,000. The Siemer Family Stability Program in partnership with Our Family Services and the Siemer Institute, seeks to help families in crisis stabilize and position themselves to improve their quality of life. Prosperity in Schools, in partnership with the Community Schools Initiative, Higher Ground, and AmeriCorps, helps connect families to human service resources in the community.

MEET SUSAN Each year, the VITA program helps thousands of Southern Arizonans put money back into their wallets and, in turn, back into our economy. This program is led by United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona in collaboration with Catholic Community Services, United Way of Yuma County, United Way of Pinal County, and United Way of Northern Arizona. Together, the collaborative is the largest tax preparer in the state of Arizona, serving ten of Arizona’s fifteen counties.

Susan is a teacher and a single mother of two young boys. Last year, a co-worker told her about the VITA service offered by United Way. As a teacher, she is part of the majority of Southern Arizonans who make less than the $66,000 income cap to use VITA. Thanks to the help of her IRS-certified, volunteer VITA tax preparer, she received credits for which she didn’t even know she was eligible. Through VITA, Susan received both the Child Tax Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit, which resulted in a $6,870 refund check! Susan tells us that this is more than she makes in two months. She used her refund to pay off some of her student loans and credit card debt. She was also able to put some money into savings for emergencies and to help fund her children’s college education. 09. HEALTHY COMMUNITIES

United Way’s Healthy Communities work focuses on improving quality of life for older people in Tucson and Southern Arizona, from retirement to end of life. ELDER ALLIANCE United Way’s ELDER Alliance is a broad collaboration of non-profit organizations, businesses, government agencies, community partners and age 50+ residents. Through its dedicated action teams, the ELDER Alliance has established a strong system to support the rapidly growing older adult population, allowing older people to stay healthy longer, remain active and involved, and maintain maximum independence. END OF LIFE CARE PARTNERSHIP

The End of Life Care partnership began as an 3,500 ELDER Alliance Action team. Through funding from The David and Lura Lovell Foundation and the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona SENIORS IN (CFSA), a partnership of Arizona nonprofits and healthcare institutions formed to cooperatively address issues related to end-of-life care. This innovative community-wide collaboration is one of the largest end-of-life care initiatives in the nation.

The End of Life Care Partnership has evolved into a network of organizations and individuals committed to ensuring quality of life at every MOBILIZED stage through education, support, sound policy and choices. 10. MEET PAULINE

Approximately 10,000 baby boomers retire in the U.S. each day. We now have the largest senior population in history. At United Way, we’re dedicated to caring for seniors in our community not only because it’s the right thing to do, but because we know that a healthy community is a strong community.

Maintaining independence is one of the biggest issues seniors face. At some point in our lives, going to the grocery store may become more difficult. That’s the case for 88-year-old Pauline Butler. Pauline lives in Tucson and doesn’t have family nearby. Unable to drive, she relies on volunteers like Barbara to take her to medical appointments, the bank and the grocery store. Volunteer services such as transportation provided by community partners are an integral part of the ELDER Alliance. Pauline tells us that she doesn’t know what she’d do if this service wasn’t available.

11. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

VOLUNTEER CENTER

The Volunteer Center at United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona connects individuals and businesses with more than 300 agencies looking for volunteers through our online platform: volunteer.unitedwaytucson.org

In 2017, nearly 76,000 organizational volunteer needs were viewed by community members and more than 10,600 community members are active in our database. More than 300 corporate partner employees and high school students were connected to volunteer projects ranging from packing school supplies into backpacks to assisting homeless veterans.

12. DAYS OF CARING

United Way of Tucson’s Days of Caring is Southern Arizona’s single largest volunteer event. Every year, thousands of people from area businesses, schools and community groups lend their time, talents and energy to volunteer for projects that make a difference in the community.

In 2017, United Way partnered with Eller College Make a Difference Day, HopeFest, Tucson Clean & Beautiful, KOLD News 13 and several generous sponsors to make the 18th Annual Days of Caring the biggest yet.

Through this event, United Way put 4,108 volunteers from community groups and businesses to work on 122 projects, including events, collection drives, landscaping, renovations and other projects that benefit Southern Arizona. Volunteers brought $424,904 of value to the community through their contributions of time alone.

13. A COMMUNITY UNITED Every year, individuals, companies and foundations throughout Tucson and Southern Arizona build a stronger community by supporting United Way’s mission.

The 2016/2017 Campaign effort was led by Edmund Marquez, of Edmund Marquez Allstate Agencies. More than 25,000 individuals and companies responded to the community call. Thank you to all of United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona’s champions for their exceptional generosity!

16. AFFINITY GROUPS YOUNG LEADERS SOCIETY Young Leaders Society (YLS) is a group of passionate, community-focused young professionals who want to connect with peers, serve their community and develop as leaders for change. They achieve these goals by participating in United Way events, engaging in community issues and giving personally. YLS raises funds for Opportunity Youth and the Re-Engagement Center (REC). In 2017 YLS donated school supplies, professional clothing, and healthy fast food gift cards to youth, sponsored a youth to attend the Opportunity Nation Summit, donated 21 new teacher baskets and decorated 500 cookies with seniors for the Primavera Men’s Shelter.

WOMEN UNITED Women United is a global movement of more than 70,000 diverse women leaders who combine their financial power and talents to address key issues in their communities. In Southern Arizona, Women United devotes its efforts to early education and literacy. Its local impact can be seen through year-round activities such as volunteer reading and networking events. Their signature event is the Annual Business Leaders for Early Education Breakfast. In 2017, The Business Breakfast raised $35,000, and 234 local Women United members raised $566,750.

ALEXIS DE TOCQUEVILLE SOCIETY Founded in 1984, the United Way Tocqueville Society is an opportunity for passionate individuals to become more deeply involved in United Way’s mission. The Tocqueville Society recognizes local philanthropic leaders who have devoted time, talent and funds to create change in our community. The Tocqueville Society was founded in honor of French historian Alexis de Tocqueville, who visited America in 1831. His most important observation was that Americans help each other in times of need. In Tucson and Southern Arizona, Tocqueville Society members demonstrate how generosity today impacts the generations of tomorrow. Last year, United Way’s Tocqueville Society raised $1,285,090 for Southern Arizona.
