The academic performance rating takes both proficiency and growth into account, but the school’s growth counts twice as much as proficiency. This allows parents to see the progress schools are making to improve student learning. See Appendix A for more detailed information.

Note: in order to determine an academic performance rating for a school, the school must include, at a minimum, students in grades 3 and 4, since those are the first grade levels in which students take the state tests and two years of data are needed to create a growth score. Schools with grades K-3 report an early childhood readiness indicator, which shows the school’s progress with student literacy in the early grades (see early childhood readiness section on page 69).

8 English Language Arts Growth This shows the Student Growth Percentile (SGP) for each school. SGP is a calculation by the NJ DOE, which shows how much the school’s results on the NJ ASK English Language Arts test improved from the previous year. SGP is calculated by looking at students with the same result in the previous year, and comparing how much they improved on the test in the next year. Schools with students who started with similar results and improved more have higher SGPs, and schools whose students improved less have lower SGPs. More information from the state on SGP can be found here: www.state.nj.us/education/njsmart/ performance.

The SGP information on the SICs also shows whether the SGP improved from the previous year, and compares each school’s SGP to the district (District schools only) and state (includes district and charter schools). It also shows how each school’s SGP compares to New Jersey schools that serve similar students. For example, in the last column on the right above, you can see that the school performed better than 35% of these schools in its English Language Arts growth.

11 4th and 8th Grade Science Proficiency Students can achieve one of three results on the NJ ASK Science test: Partially Proficient, Proficient, or Advanced Proficient. Students take the NJ ASK Science test in grade 4 and in grade 8. The SIC shows the percentage of students in each of those grade levels who scored Proficient or Advanced Proficient on the NJ ASK Science test. It also shows the percentage point change in proficiency from the previous year. For example, if a school’s 2014 proficiency is 25% and its change is +5%, that means that in the spring of 2014, 25% of students in the school achieved proficiency in Science, and that represents a five percentage point increase from the school’s proficiency results in 2013. In all cases, the most complete dataset available is used. For District schools, the source is the complete testing file provided to the district by the NJ DOE, which includes all valid scores. For charter and renaissance schools, the source is www.state.nj.us/education/data.

This row of the SIC also shows the percentage of students who reached proficiency in the District as a whole (includes District schools only), and the state as a whole (includes district and charter schools). Please note that NJ DOE does not make growth data available for Science.
