MARK ALLEN & THE HERDING CATZ (Big Jim Widdop + Mick Moonshine The Smithfield Derby. 15/7/2018 Derby.

I supported The Analogue Dogs last year when they played the Smithfield and a great gig was had by one and all. Mark Allen one half of the Analogue Dogs has flown over from Nashville to play a one off gig at The Smithfield Derby part of a tour put together by Pete Buxton.

Mark is a friendly guy and I have great memories of last year's gig and got a bit excited when he told me he was coming over this year and wanted me to support him again at the Smithfield. Mark is promoting his new Rolling to the Fringe. When I arrived at around 2pm Priscilla had come over and was parked up for anybody who wanted to see inside her and hear the story of her journey from Colorado to Derby's.

The band kicked off around 5pm with 'Johnny be Good' a couple of number in and Big Jim Widdop joined them for a couple of bluesy Country numbers, in all 3 sets promoting Mark Allen (Nashville guitarist/singer) new CD 'Rolling to the Fringe' 2 sets in, and it happened Mark talking away to the audience and shouted me over, he said he had wrote a song for me (about me) and they played it, never happened before I was lost Top poster for words, Thanks Mark nothing will top that... the Gary Betts band played on Big Jim Widdop came back on for Middle a few more tracks and before you know it, yep Mark and it's all over, what a brilliant Sunday afternoon the Pete beer is flowing the sun is out and the barbeque is Buxton + just something else, Priscilla is popular and the story is being told, this is how Sunday afternoons Herding should be... The Ballad of Mick Moonshine is out Catz there on u tube and Spotify... The CD Mark Allen Below Big 'Rolling to the Fringe' is out there grab a copy Jim when you can, well we lined the beers and before Widdop you know it, was time for me to go... The Eyes Have It Music Festival Eyes Meadow Duffield 6th, 7th & 8th July 2018.

After the lovely weather that was enjoyed by all those at last year's Eye Have It Music Festival, I hardly dared wish for nice weather again for fear of upsetting any weather gods listening in. But those on high showered their blessings on us again with unrelenting warm sunshine throughout, and just a few occasional cloudier interludes ensured that this year's

This was version of The Doors classic ‘LA Woman’ which Peter Farrier from Stafford, who, I later learned from ended their set. The Raindogs are regulars on the chatting to him later, sketches a lot of the top music pub circuit in Derby, so, I for one, will definitely be acts at festivals around the country. Telsen played a great set comprising their own material, with songs like ‘Cherry Siren’ ‘Circles’ and ‘Cowboy,’ with Nick adding a wider dimension to his vocals with the use of a megaphone on these last two, reminding me somewhat of the cover of Bryan Adams’ album ‘Waking Up The HAZEL O'CONNOR Pic DICKON CLARK Neighbours’ before finally ending the set with ‘Dumbdown.’ Rather than just playing a selection of her best known numbers, Hazel interspersed the set with There was now just one act to go now, and as the anecdotes about her life and the stories behind the crowd’s anticipation for Hazel O’ Connor grew, songs; early on she related how she had come to Breakin’ Rocks played a spirited set in the beer be a singer in the first place, and anyone who has tent as the last vestiges of daylight slipped away, seen her before will know that her story telling is with numbers such as the very appropriate ‘What A commonplace in her sets Beautiful Day’ and ‘Get Lucky.’ Hazel started off with ‘Runaway,’ hinting at the time Hazel O’Connor was an absolute sweetie to talk to she’d run away from home at just 16 years of age, pre gig, and had freely chatted with fans when she followed by more dialogue and ‘Monsters In had first arrived at The Eyes Meadow early, as the Disguise.’ I am only familiar with a handful of her sat nav had taken her here instead of her hotel. The Ruins set was up on the main stage, and the band played a good selection of their material including some from their CD ‘Machines,’ which was on sale by the stage, starting the set off with ‘GITP.’ I was impressed with ‘Disunited Nation,’ ‘Not Welcome’ and particularly ‘Radio.’ The Ruins went on to play at the excellent three day event Punks Against Cancer the following week at The Hairy Dog, which raised a fantastic £800. Needless to say, I was there too.

The Oxfam stall had some funky second hand gear; another stall was dong a roaring trade selling flower crowns, whilst elsewhere you could buy some beautiful crafted jewellery.

The food stalls had a wide selection of food for both meat eaters and veggies, and were all reasonably priced. The wood fired pizza oven people were back again, doing brisk business with people walking around throughout the festival with huge pizzas which were made in front of you in just a couple of minutes. These people just didn’t do small as there was a huge pan of paella on the go, whilst if you didn’t eat meat, then they did a nice line in vegetarian tagines, which was simply delicious. Each song would start with a well known punk song riff, but as if to tease you that, for example, Psycho

As the sun was slowly sinking below the horizon, anticipation was high for the headline act, From The

Jam. The band is these days made up of Russell Hastings, who is the only frontman other than to have worked with both Bruce Foxton and , who was the former The Jam drummer; now that position is taken up by Mike Randon.

The first we knew that the band had arrived was when a big car pulled up backstage, and the lads all leapt RUSSELL HASTINGS out raring to go. After Russell had From The Jam played for over an hour, and at this introduced the band, without further ado they tore into point, the band played their final number of the a set that included such their best known songs, evening, but as you and I know full well, this including ‘That’s Entertainment,’ ‘David Watts’ ‘A wasn’t the end of the night, and after a lot of ’ and ‘Eton Rifles,’ with the same shouting stamping and cheering, the band all energy as those early days with Bruce Foxton still trooped back on stage for the inevitable encore leaping in the air much the same as he ever did. where we were all treated to a couple or three more from the Jam’s back catalogue, including ‘Down In The Tube Station At Midnight’ and ‘Start!’

This wasn’t quite the end of the evening’s music, though, as From The Jam jumped back in their car and sped off into the night, the music continued in great style in the beer tent with some rocking good indie sounds provided by a band from Lancashire called Suburban Symphony. This five piece band played a set consisting of their own material and

Have you started work on your next solo album yet? Bembridge Drive, Alvaston, Derby. Writing for it at the moment.

When you write songs how do you decide what is more suitable for Rhino’s Revenge as opposed to Quo?

It’s usually obvious.

You and your band were clearly having a blast on stage tonight. How does going on the road with Rhino’s Revenge compare to a Quo tour?

Much more tiring, but great fun, the musicians I’m fortunate to have with me always amazing.

If you were asked to form a band for a one off gig and you could pick anyone (living or dead) that you wanted, who would be in the band?

Ringo Starr, Geezer Butler, Vincent Crane, Rick Parfitt and William Shatner, Really.
