Now, in the 21st Century, nigga is still considered one of the most impactful words in the English lexicon. This dissertation provides one situated and contingent analysis of nigga as a moment of excess in the Higher Education classroom. I wed Judith Butler’s theorizing of ex-citable speech via her analyses of J.L. Austin’s influential conceptualizations of speech acts and Louis Althusser’s interpellation to Henry Louis Gates’ theory of Signifyin(g) in order to interrogate the multitudinous articulations and appropriations of nigga as a Signifyin(g) performative. Through my theorizing of nigger-nigga as a Signifyin(g) performative, I interrogate the continuity and discontinuity of use specific to the English Composition and Literature classroom, as well as within multiple Higher Education classrooms and discussions. I interrogate use through the methodology of what I classify as Foucauldian-lite Discourse Analysis, in order to examine nigger and nigga as ex-citable speech. My intention is to interrogate how these utterances inflect and influence constructions of multiply conflicting and complimentary histories, identities, subjectivities and power relationships of professors and students in visible and invisible ways. The Untitled Supplemental Image is a metaphor for my methodology.     The “Spirit of Saratoga” must not be slavery Response to the repulsive wall of “lawn jockeys” that both glorify slavery and erase the history of Black jockeys, currently installed at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. This is not an act of vandalism. It is a work of public art and an act of applied art criticism. This work of protest art is in solidarity with the Art Action movement and the belief that art is essential to democracy We Reject the whitewashing of Saratoga’s history. We Reject the whitewashing of our national history. This nation was founded on slavery. So was the modern sport of Thoroughbred racing. You insult us and degrade the godfathers of the sport by perpetuating, profiting from and celebrating the flagrant symbol of servitude and slavery that is now called the “lawn jockey.” Just like the confederate flag, the “lawn jockey” is a celebrated relic of the antebellum era. The evolution of the hitching post (later renamed “lawn jockey”) follows the historical national trend of racist imagery and perpetuated stereotypes about Black Americans. This iconography is not unique, and the evidence can be found in everything from postcards, napkin holders, toothpaste, key racks, cigarette lighters, tobacco jars, syrup pitchers and doorstops, to name a fraction of the products designed to maintain the ideology of slavery. The original Jockeys were born into slavery or were the sons of slaves. From its inception in the early 19th century, African-American jockeys ruled the sport of organized Thoroughbred racing for almost a century. Isaac Murphy, the greatest American jockey of all time, was the son of a former slave.

    7 Race Relations and Conversations as Hip-Hop Calls Out Anime In TweRk by Latasha N. Nevada Diggs Lisa DEL SOL Columbia University The poetry of Latasha N. Nevada Diggs (2013) moves beyond the conventional boundaries separating music and text within traditional Western literature in her book TweRk. By both actively connecting and fusing music and text into this body of work she creates a text with a sonic element that moves beyond the boundaries of the page. Diggs (2013) further complicates the relationship between text, sound and visual media in her poetry which is a fusion of pop culture, rhythm, African American Vernacular English (AAVE) and a multitude of languages (including various Caribbean Patois) making it difficult to categorize her poetry due to its polyphonic nature. Diggs’s (2013) poetry ranges from references and direct quotes from hip-hop songs (such as titles and lyrics), as well as alluding to particular rhythms all while addressing stereotypes of sexism and combatting worldwide images of anti-blackness. I will discuss sound and its relationship to poetry, the role of pop culture in the text, and its interactions with misogynoir.1 Using Edouard Glissant’s terminology for language and culture in the Caribbean being an amalgamation of sorts, what he called Antillanité2 and viewing Diggs’s (2013) representation of Blackness through a multicultural lens disrupts the monolithic narrative of Black identity. She invokes a pluralistic perspective on language with her use of Japanese, English and AAVE in the same poem. She also examines the duality of Black identity, what WEB DuBois referred to as double consciousness (DuBois 1961, 3) and alienation exemplifying the “twoness” the “two souls, two thoughts and two unreconciled strivings; two warring ideals in one dark body” (DuBois 1961, 3).

Bunting-Hudson All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT The Art of the Hustle: A Study of the Rap Music Industry in Bogota, Colombia Laura L. Bunting-Hudson How do rap artists in Bogota, Colombia come together to make music? What is the process they take to commodify their culture? Why are some rappers able to become socially mobile in this process, while others are less so? What is technology’s role in all of this? This ethnography explores those questions, as it carefully documents the strategies utilized by various rap groups in Bogota, Colombia to create social mobility, commoditize products and to create a different vision of modernity within the hip-hop community, as an alternative to the ideals set forth by mainstream Colombian society. Resistance Art Poetry (RAP), is said to have originated in the United States but has become a form of international music. In conducting ethnographic research from December of 2012 to October 2014, I was able to discover how rappers organize themselves politically, how they commoditize their products and distribute them to create various types of social mobilities. In this dissertation, I constructed models to typologize rap groups in Bogota, Colombia, which I call polities of rappers to discuss how these groups come together, take shape, make plans and execute them to reach their business goals.

The global hip-hop industry admittedly circulates images of blackness that were once silenced, but on the terms of an economically and socially dominant order. The resulting fascination with stereotypes of blackness, essentialised by those in positions of corporate power, means hip-hop becomes an increasingly complex identity- forming tool for young people worldwide. From a series of case studies exploring young black women’s relationship to hip-hop, Lauren Leigh Kelly argues that many “construct their identities in relation to media representations of blackness and femininity in hip-hop music and culture” (2015, p. 530). However, the stereotypical images of blackness which are encouraged ignore elements of choice, empowerment and re-contextualisation in hip-hop whilst meeting the widespread demand for imagery of a racial “Other”. The often negative associations with such images denies individuals the opportunity to identify their own relationship towards them, independent of media scrutiny and judgement. Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop (That Thing)” “sounds gender” (Bradley, 2015) through lyrics, flow, and multimedia, working to empower black femininities with self-respect. I argue that Hill’s track voices specifically black female concerns, prioritising notions of community central to black feminist thought (Collins, 2009).
