We see the iPad as whole new level.” a tool to support key processes in learning - accessing, organising, processing and http://www.apple.com/education/iPad/ publishing information, collaboration, creativity and communication - and for teachers to use them as an environment to facilitate deeper engagement in learning and higher-ordering thinking.

Benefits to Students Digital Citizenship teaches students how to be discerning when accessing content and supports the ethical use of technology. Students will be supported with their ability to extend their own learning independently and they will be provided with a tool for improved communication between teachers, students and parents and encouraged to become life- long learners.

3

The iPad is a tool for learning These are our expectations:

• Students need an Apple iTunes account with password and this is not to be shared with any other student. (Further information later in this booklet) • Have the latest iOS installed on the iPad. • The iPad should be brought to school each day, charged and ready to be used. The charger should be left at home to avoid losing it at school. • Your iPad must be protected by a case. There are many cases on the market. We would recommend a cover that gives all around protection. The iPad should be kept in its case at all times to avoid damage. • iPads are to be stored in lockers when not required in class. • Students must abide by the ICT policies set in place by the College at all times. • The iPad is to be used responsibly and students comply with teachers’ instructions to put the device away. • It is strongly recommended that a passcode is set up on your iPad to prevent others accessing your information as well as the “Find my iPad” app in case your iPad is missing so that it can be located. • Have the student’s College assigned e-mail account set up on the iPad mail app. • Students are responsible for backing up and managing their own data either through iCloud or iTunes. • The College will be supplying you with a safe personal online storage space for resources and work in progress (Elocker). Students may wish to set up their own Dropbox or iCloud service for storing data.

4

Digital Workflow iPads have greatly assisted with our workflows within the College. We have two customised apps that our students find indispensable: eLocker Aitken has its own ‘Cloud’ called ‘eLocker’! All students have their own personal eLocker that only they can access and also a series of class shared eLockers as eLocker is mapped to the timetable so that all students and staff are able to see the relevant information. Teachers are able to easily share information with their students and students can deliver work to their teachers using a dropbox. Teachers can mark work with digital ink and leave verbal feedback to assist students with their work. eLocker is available as an app on the iPad and also as a web based portal so accessible from any computer with internet access.

Electronic Diary All students have access to an electronic diary to assist them with their organisation and homework. Students are able to add their own homework and see their homework load and their teachers are able to add homework for their students that cannot be deleted! All teachers have their own version of the app. There is a parent app to enable parents to see what homework their children have been given and any due dates. This is available from or iPads and also as a web-based service from any desktop PC, laptop or Android tablet or .

5

How are iPads being used? Students are expected to use their iPad in an appropriate and safe manner at all times. The more our students and staff use their iPads, the more ways they find to use them to support teaching and learning. Students currently use their iPads to access, communicate, collaborate and share information – email their teachers using their Aitken Mail, deliver work to their teachers and collaborate on a whole range of topics. iPads have become an indispensable tool to aid personal organisation, creativity and inquiry for all students and staff.

Here are some examples of the many ways our students use their iPad: • Photographs – their work, board notes, College environment, steps of a practical task, animation projects. Students are reminded that they should only take photographs of teachers/other students with consent. • Film making, animation creation • Video group activities, experiments, College environment, demonstrations • Internet research and using specific websites • A variety of apps – Calculator, , Keynote, Creative Bookbuilder and many more • Using the dictionary, thesaurus or atlas • Recording a voice memo – homework, reminders, podcasting • Reading an eBook, The Bible, magazines or periodicals • Listening to an audiobook or podcast • Making a note of homework and deadlines, adding homework to their digital diary • Watching video and accessing the ClickView digital video library • Creating multimedia presentations or • Scanning QR codes and accessing information • Using the scanning app to scan a document • Converting measurements, using a compass, level or ruler • Creating documents, graphs, spreadsheets, presentations • Downloading a document from iTunes U e.g. instructional booklets, school map • Responding to a quiz e.g. Socrative app • Planning, Concept mapping and brainstorming e.g. Inspiration Maps • Digital publishing – creating impressive magazines • ePortfolio creation using Creative Book Builder or Book Creator • Accessing classwork or submitting work using eLocker • Researching using the internet or the Zenhat app • Making digital posters • Accessing their digital textbooks • creation • Storyboarding

6

Student use of iPads at home Students should take their iPad home and bring it to school each day fully charged. iPads may be required to complete homework or to access and submit work through their eLocker.

The College recommends parents take the following measures:

• Students should use the iPad in an area of the home where its use can be visually monitored • Ask your child to show you for what they have used their iPad. They should provide their device to you on request • Place restrictions on use of the device if it is not being used in a way that suits you • If you are concerned about controlling Internet content that can be accessed, the College recommends using a free service such as OpenDNS (www.opendns.com) to filter Internet content for your home. It is a relatively simple to use tool whereby you can manage access to content categories. The service also works with most home Wi-Fi routers and ADSL gateways • iPads should be connected to your home wireless systems

Student use of iPads at school The following is a list of the expectations students are to accept when using iPads at school. Students are expected to:

• Follow all teacher directions including when and how to use the device • Have the volume of devices muted at the beginning of each lesson • Use appropriate manners when communicating electronically • Close down all apps at the beginning of the lesson • Provide their device to teachers upon request • Students are required to maintain and clean their device and keep it in good order • Students are required to inform the teacher or others when using the camera and audio recording functions and are reminded that they must not publish photographs to any online network. • Students may only access their device during recess and lunch, for the purpose of explicit school work and NOT games. Teachers have permission to delete games from the iPad if they are being played in school without permission. If the iPad is being used at lunchtime it should be used in the Library. • Students are required to have the device fully charged at the beginning of each school day and have a working set of headphones with them in all classes. • Students are required to actively check their school email for communications from the College. • Students may not loan their device to another student or leave it in such a place where it is likely to be damaged or stolen. • Students must only download appropriately rated applications.

7

• They must not jailbreak their iPad (Change the so that they can install apps that are not just from Apple – this also voids the warranty)

A balance between the use of digital technologies and physical activities is essential. • Students must commit to a healthy lifestyle by using mobile devices only when relevant during the school day. • Students must commit to a balance of the use of the device at home.

Internet Safety and Content Filtering at Aitken Netbox Blue filters all email and Internet traffic at Aitken to ensure that our students are provided with a safe environment in which to use any College owned computer or mobile device as well as personal mobile devices. Content is filtered to ensure that no inappropriate material can be viewed or downloaded by our students. Netbox checks for inappropriate messaging and also monitors Aitken Mail.

We block certain sites and services for students and maintain a vigilant approach to ensure that students are able to use their iPads to assist them with their learning.

Setting up an iTunes Account Apple's current terms and conditions state that users must be 13 years of age or older to have a personal Apple ID. This means that prior to 13 years of age, the Apple ID associated with a child's iPad is the parents' or guardians' Apple ID for that device, and not the student's. Consequently, we ask parents and guardians of children under the age of 13 to create and manage their child's Apple ID. Parents can decide whether to continue to manage their child's Apple ID once he/she turns 13 years of age. (See Appendix 1 from Apple on how to set up an iTunes account for your child)

Another alternative would be to set up a family iTunes account. This is particularly beneficial should there be more than one child in the family with an iPad or iPhone since apps can be legally loaded on up to 5 devices. Apps would therefore only need to be purchased once and then shared amongst the family devices.

We absolutely recommend that the iTunes account is set up without linking it to any credit or debit card to ensure that the maximum amount that can be spent in the App Store at any one time is the amount of money left on the iTunes card. (Details Later in this booklet)

Giftcardsonsale Giftcardsonsale.com.au is a very useful website to find out where the latest offer on iTunes cards are e.g. 20% iTunes cards at Woolworths, Coles, JB Hi-Fi etc. Buying iTunes cards when 8

they are on sale is a good way to buy iTunes cards and reducing the costs of any App Store purchases.

Purchasing an iPad

Which iPad? We highly recommend purchasing a full sized iPad with a minimum specification of 32GB Wi-Fi*. We do not recommend an iPad with 3G or cellular capacity, as we are only able to monitor Wi-Fi through the College filtering service. 64GB or 128GB iPads are also fine but our experience tells us that a 16GB iPad does not have sufficient capacity especially when loaded with digital textbooks. iPad Minis are also quite popular but we would advise caution when buying an iPad Mini because of the size of the screen and as this is the only mobile device the student will have access to in the College, they might find the screen size too small when typing documents or reading ebooks.

We have suggested iPad 3 32GB or above as a minimum standard, but Apple have recently updated their iPad collection to include the new iPad Air and this will also be good. If you are considering an iPad Mini, have a look at the new iPad Air – there is very little difference in weight but the iPad Air has a much better screen size.

Where do you purchase your iPad? – Wherever the best deal is at the time!

*Original iPad 1 does not have a camera and can no longer be updated to the latest iOS so is not suitable for use in the College.

AppleCare We recommend purchasing iPads with AppleCare in case any problems occur with the iPad. AppleCare extends technical, hardware and software support to your iPad to 2 years. If there is a problem you are able to take your iPad into an for assistance e.g. Chadstone, Doncaster, Fountain Gate or Highpoint.

Insurance AppleCare is not accidental insurance and accidents do sometimes happen! Please check with your household insurance provider to see whether the iPad is covered for accidental damage. It might be that for a very small premium, you are able to cover the iPad alongside your regular household insurance.

9

iPad Setup We will provide assistance to our students in setting up their iPads at the beginning of the College year and the Aitken is a student run iPad Helpdesk and is available in the Library during lunchtimes.

App Purchases The College recommends the following set of apps for all students. The prices are given as an indication of cost – please be aware that some apps vary in price from time to time. These apps should be downloaded at home for the beginning of the College year. Students cannot access the App Store during the day at Aitken.

Students may be asked to download free apps throughout the year for some subjects as new and suitable apps emerge. Any subject specific apps will be issued with the booklist for 2014 but any paid for apps after this time will be provided by the College. Parents will not be asked to pay for apps throughout the year.

Instructions for setting up an iTunes account without a credit card

When using your iPad for the first time, it will need to be associated with an iTunes account. You can set up your iPad through a home or other wireless connection, or by connecting it to a computer with the latest version of iTunes installed. It is a good idea to have an iTunes account set up and ready before you do this. It will be necessary to have your iPad set up and ready for use before bringing it to school.

Steps for setting up iTunes on a computer (the steps you complete will be very similar to the following):

• Start iTunes • Click on the Store menu item at the top of the page • Click on Create Account, then click Continue • At the screen you will need to read and agree to the Apple iTunes Terms & Conditions. Before proceeding, you will need to tick the box that says “I have read

and agree to the iTunes Terms and Conditions”, then click Continue • At the next screen, enter your e-mail address (this can be a parent or family email address as it will be used for App Store purchases). Enter and remember a password, security question and birthday, then click continue. We recommend that you use a complex password of eight or more upper and lower case alpha-numeric characters as well as a symbol. For example: K1w1Fruit# (do not use this exact same password!) • At the payment options screen, select None. Enter an iTunes Gift Card number as shown below You will also need to fill in the required information such as name and address details, then click Continue • The next screen should then prompt you to ‘Verify Your Account’. After clicking ‘Done’, check your e-mail for the verification e-mail and follow its instructions to activate your iTunes account.

22

• iTunes would then prompt you to enter your account Apple ID and Password to Sign In, after which you should see a ‘Congratulations’ or welcome message. Once clicking Done, you will be taken to the iTunes Store homepage

We recommend that parents have access to the e-mail account that is used to set up the iTunes account or that this is a family iTunes account. This way purchases can be monitored and tracked. If a credit card is used, parents should be in charge of the iTunes account so that they are able to track purchases. All in app purchases should be disabled in the settings so that additional charges cannot be accrued.

If and when you upgrade your iPad to a newer model, your purchases can be easily moved to the new device so they do not need to be purchased again. If you have more than one child at the College, the same iTunes account can be used for your children and apps only need to be purchased once and then synchronised onto their individual devices.

23

The most cost effective method of buying apps is by buying iTunes gift cards as then only a limited amount of money can be spent on apps. Discounts of up to 25% are available from many retailers. Please see www.giftcardsonsale.com.au for current promotions.

Parent Guide—Apple ID for Students

This guide provides an overview for parents and guardians on how to manage an Apple ID for Students on iOS devices such as iPad. It also includes important registration information that will allow student access to necessary classroom content.

As a parent or guardian, you want the best learning environment for your student. One that makes learning relevant for each student and allows for creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. With an iOS device from Apple, students always have access to the content they need to learn—no matter where they are. This includes their own notes and created materials, textbooks, and courses.

Apple ID Your student will have a personal account with Apple, called an Apple ID, that provides easy access to school materials, including documents, textbooks, and courses. With an Apple ID, your student can: • Receive app licenses and redeem codes for education books and textbooks. • Take notes in iBooks and sync those notes between iOS devices, such as a school-owned iPad and a personal iPod touch. • Enroll in iTunes U courses. • Download education content again, if needed for the next school year. • Add personal content to a school-owned iOS device, if permitted by school policies.

This Apple ID also gives your students iCloud so they can access content on multiple devices and stay up to date from anywhere. iCloud allows your student to: • Automatically keep school documents up to date between multiple iOS devices. • Keep personal content such as , calendars, documents, and photos up to date between multiple devices. • Back up an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch automatically when connected to Wi-Fi and a power source. • Use Find My iPhone to locate a lost or stolen iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, or Mac.

Apple ID for Students Under 13 For students under 13, Apple IDs and iCloud are requested by the school or school district. A temporary ID is created upon receipt of consent by a parent or guardian. Parents or guardians then create a personalized Apple ID on the student’s behalf. Apple IDs for students under 13 have limited targeted advertising, and by default, iCloud email is not activated.

Apple IDs for students under 13 include the following features: • Account settings, such as email address and date of birth, cannot be changed. • No credit card is attached to the account at setup. • Targeted advertising will be limited. • Accounts are unable to opt in to receive marketing materials from Apple. • Parents or guardians are notified by email of material changes to the service or issues with the account. Once your student reaches age 13, the Apple ID converts to a full account with all associated rights and privileges. Your student can continue to access any classwork, notes, books, or apps associated with the Apple ID.

1 Privacy Your student’s privacy is important to Apple. Our privacy policy covers how we collect, use, disclose, transfer, and store information we may receive from your student. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with our privacy practices. Visit apple.com/privacy to learn more about Apple’s privacy policy.

Under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), Apple must obtain verifiable parental consent to our Privacy Policy and Parent Privacy Disclosure and Consent Notice (apple.com/privacy/ parentaldisclosureconsent.pdf) before an Apple ID can be created for your under-13 student. Your school will contact you directly about the process for providing such consent and creating your student’s Apple ID.

Service and Support Once your student‘s account is set up, you have access to support from Apple. If your student loses access to the account, the password can be reset online via Apple ID Support.

Parental Restrictions Using an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch can provide your student with access to a wealth of information. However, at times you may want to limit access to certain types of content or resources. On iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch, you can set restrictions on individual devices, such as preventing in-app purchases and designating allowable content.

You can also enable restrictions on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to prevent access to specific features. For example, you can restrict explicit music from displaying on playlists or prevent the installation of certain apps.

To set Restrictions: Go to Settings > General > Restrictions, then tap Enable Restrictions.

We strongly encourage you to review the steps below and set restrictions on your student’s device and all other Apple devices your student uses. Remember that Restrictions are specific to the device on which they are set, so you must set Restrictions on each device your student uses.

2 You’ll be asked to set a Restrictions passcode that allows changes to the settings you make. Important: This passcode is different from the passcode for unlocking your student’s iPad. This is a passcode that only you, and not your student, should know. If you forget your Restrictions passcode, you must restore the iPad back to factory settings. See “Updating and restoring iPad software” in the iPad User Guide.

You can set restrictions for the following items:

Safari—Disables the app and removes its icon from the Home screen. Safari cannot be used to browse the web. Camera—Disables the Camera app and removes its icon from the Home screen. Location Services lets location-based apps, such as Reminders, Maps, and Camera, gather and use data that indicates the location of your student’s device. The approximate location of your student’s device is determined using available information from cellular network data (on Wi-Fi + cellular models), local Wi-Fi networks (if Wi-Fi is turned on), and GPS (which may not be available in all areas). The location data collected by Apple is not collected in a form that personally identifies you. When an app is using Location Services, an icon appears in the menu bar.

Turn Location Services on or off—You can turn Location Services off for some or all apps and services. If you turn off Location Services, your student will be prompted to turn it on again the next time an app or service tries to use it.

When these services use your student’s location, your student can see the status of the services, turn them on or off, or display an icon in the menu bar. Students under age 13 will not receive location-based iAd advertisements.

Turning off access to private information—You can establish privacy settings for Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Photos, Bluetooth Sharing, or Twitter and Facebook accounts (if they exist).
