4 5 WELCOME

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to this special gala evening celebrating BAM President Karen Brooks Hopkins and her 36 exceptional years of service to BAM.

We have a memorable night in store. Some of Karen’s favorite artists will perform, including Mavis Staples, Steve Reich, and . And a host of Karen’s colleagues, family members, and friends will describe the incredible impact Karen has had on BAM, Brooklyn, and the careers of innumerable artists and arts professionals around the world.

But through all the tributes and testimonials, remember that Karen has also had an impact on you. Even if you don’t know Karen personally, you know her through the ineffable energy that pervades every part of BAM—the buzz, the sense of anticipation—or through the commitment to adventurous art and experiences that defines so much of what BAM presents. You also know her by the positive mark she has left on this neighborhood, and by a vision that has boldly extended from the stage out into the streets. You know Karen as one whose commitment is all-encompassing, and it thrills me that you’ve been able to share in that passion.

On a personal note, I know Karen as my tireless professional partner—a role she has occupied for almost as long as she has been at BAM. I say “professional partner” because, more than just a colleague, she has been my invaluable complement, my resonant sounding board, and my inspired and inspiring other half. I simply cannot imagine the last few decades without her tenacious spirit and exceptional leadership helping to guide BAM towards the fulfillment of its mission. It has been an exhilarating journey, and one that I am more than happy to have traveled by her side.

Tonight is a night for celebration. Tonight we toast a legend.

Cheers,

Joseph V. Melillo BAM Executive Producer Photo: courtesy of Karen Brooks Hopkins

Dear Karen:

It is a great pleasure to join with your friends, family, and everyone at BAM in congratulating you on your retirement after 36 years of service to the people of our city.

BAM is one of our city’s most outstanding cultural institutions that has become an international epicenter of the arts, yet still remains a place for everyone – a place for all of Brooklyn and for all of New York City. For this, we have your outstanding leadership and tremendous vision to thank. As president, you have transformed BAM into the thriving cultural center that it is, expanding education initiatives, showcasing the work of renowned artists, and strengthening relationships with the community.

Your work to enhance the arts in our city extends far beyond your efforts at BAM. From the guidance you provided during your tenure as the Chair of the Cultural Institutions Group and as a member of the Cultural Affairs Advisory Commission to your commitment to connecting American audiences to the work of international artists, you have made an indelible impact on the cultural landscape of our city and our world. As you reflect on your incredible career, Chirlane and I are delighted to add our voices to the chorus of well-wishers.

On behalf of all New Yorkers, we offer best wishes for a celebration that is as worthy as your innumerable accomplishments, and a very happy and healthy retirement.

Sincerely,

Bill de Blasio Mayor
