The collection includes mainly correspondence, exhibition details, printmakers, gallery/art centres, colleges/universities, entry forms, slides, receipts and copies of newspaper clippings. They provide a comprehensive history of the administrative processes of the council and its exhibitions. The majority of the collection contains correspondence written by administrative staff; of greater interest is the correspondence, often handwritten by the artists themselves. In the earlier boxes the exhibition detail is more comprehensive with itineraries (drafts and finals) and forms stating the exhibiting galleries and artist lists with print sales included. Also of interest are the artists’ biographies, sometimes with handwritten notes; these were used for exhibition catalogues, print directories, Imprint and member print submissions. There are approximately 2000 slides in this collection mainly representing prints associated with PCA exhibitions. PCA committee records including ballot forms for nominating committee members, agendas and minutes of Annual General meetings, bank statements and bank reconciliation statements also comprises part of the collection. __________________________________________________________________ HANRAHAN, Barbara (1939-1991) PRG 961 Series List Described as one of Adelaide's finest writers and artists, Barbara Hanrahan was born at Thebarton in 1939. Her father died when she was only one year and one day old, so she grew up with her Mother, Grandmother and little Great Aunt who was a Downs Syndrome victim. In her own words "... it was a life cocooned by these three women ... we lived in an old part of Adelaide, surrounded by scabbed asphalt footpaths and old cedar trees dropping their berries. It was lovely to grow up there; now, looking back, it seems with all its ugliness and ordinariness a paradise place." The young Barbara studied art teaching at Adelaide Teachers' College; her career began in 1960 with teaching three days a week at Elizabeth Girls' Technical School and two days at Strathmont Girls' Technical School. When the Printmaking Department was established at the South Australian School of Art she enrolled for evening classes and was immediately captivated by this art form. In order to progress and express her individuality she needed to break away from her beloved Adelaide, so she sailed for London in 1963. There she studied at the London Central School of Art where her work developed rapidly. Whilst supporting herself through teaching appointments in England, her art was featured in more and more exhibitions and began to sell. Barbara was able to return on a visit to Adelaide, but she was in London when her Grandmother died in 1968. This bereavement had a shocking impact on Barbara who said .. -

Wakefield Press Barbara Hanrahan A Biography Annette Stewart has lectured in English and Australian Literature at the universities of New England, New South Wales, Sydney, Western Sydney, Macquarie and, most recently, Anhui University, in China. She also teaches English as a Second Language at Macquarie University. Annette has published a large number of articles and reviews in the field of Australian Literature, and is working on her memoirs of her visits to China. She lives in Sydney with her husband Ken. a White Glove Event Artists from the South Australian School of Art 1861 to 1961 at the Art Gallery of South Australia A fundraising event for the Friends of the South Australian School of Art Inc., held in collaboration with the Art Gallery of South Australia. These works were created during the School’s first hundred years from 1861 on North Terrace to the early 1960s when the school was on the brink of moving to its Stanley Street North Adelaide campus in July 1963. In particular, the event forms part of the broader South Australian School of Art History Project and focuses on works that are held among the Art Gallery of South Australia’s magnificent collection of Australian prints, drawings and photographs. The works for this event have been chosen for what they reveal about This is front face of the Harry P Gill Medal which is awarded annually to significant - and sometimes surprising - aspects of the School’s long, the student at the South Australian distinguished and diverse visual history and the quality of their execution School of Art with the highest grade over a century of changing South Australian culture.
