Despite the proximity of Sredna Gora Mountains to Sofia, the insect assemblages of this region are poorly studied. As a result of two studies carried out as a part of an Environmental Impact Assessment in the Natura 2000 Protected Areas: Sredna Gora and Popintsi, a rich diversity of insects was discovered, with 107 saproxylic and epigeobiont Coleoptera species and 355 Lepidoptera species recorded. This research was conducted during a short one-season field study in the surrounding areas of the town of Panagyurishte and Oborishte Village. Special attention was paid to protected species and their conservation status. Of the Coleoptera recorded, 22 species were of conservation significance. Forty-five Lepidoptera species of conservation importance were also recorded. KEY WORDS.WORDS. • Quantifying Dispersal in British Noctuid Moths
Quantifying dispersal in British noctuid moths Hayley Bridgette Clarke Jones Doctor of Philosophy University of York Biology September 2014 1 Abstract Dispersal is an important process in the ecology and evolution of organisms, affecting species’ population dynamics, gene flow, and range size. Around two thirds of common and widespread British macro-moths have declined in abundance over the last 40 years, and dispersal ability may be important in determining whether or not species persist in this changing environment. However, knowledge of dispersal ability in macro-moths is lacking because dispersal is difficult to measure directly in nocturnal flying insects. This thesis investigated the dispersal abilities of British noctuid moths to examine how dispersal ability is related to adult flight morphology and species’ population trends. Noctuid moths are an important taxon to study because of their role in many ecosystem processes (e.g. as pollinators, pests and prey), hence their focus in this study. I developed a novel tethered flight mill technique to quantify the dispersal ability of a range of British noctuid moths (size range 12 – 27 mm forewing length). I demonstrated that this technique provided measures of flight performance in the lab (measures of flight speed and distance flown overnight) that reflected species’ dispersal abilities reported in the wild. I revealed that adult forewing length was a good predictor of inter- specific differences in flight performance among 32 noctuid moth species. I also found high levels of intra-specific variation in flight performance, and both adult flight morphology and resource-related variables (amount of food consumed by individuals prior to flight, mass loss by adults during flight) contributed to this variation.

Nat. Croat., Vol. 29, No. 2, 227-240, 2020, Zagreb. In 2016 and 2017 a survey of the butterflies and moth fauna of the island of Lokrum, Dubrovnik was carried out. A total of 208 species were recorded, which, together with 15 species from the literature, raised the total number of known species to 223. The results of our survey can be used as a baseline for the study of future changes in the Lepidoptera composition on the island. In comparison with the lit- erature records, eight butterfly species can be regarded as extinct from the island. The most probable reason for extinction is the degradation of the grassland habitats due to the natural succession as well as the introduction of the European Rabbit and Indian Peafowl. Their presence has probably had a tremendously detrimental effect on the native flora and fauna of the island. To conserve the Lepidop- tera fauna of the island, and the still remaining biodiversity, immediate eradication of these introduced species is needed. The species are as follows: Dysgonia algira, Grammodes stolida, Eublemma purpurina, Spodoptera exigua, Rhodometra sacraria, and Dolicharthia punctalis. KEY WORDS: rare species, faunistics, migrations, Poland, Lepidoptera, new records. Migrations among Lepidoptera are well-known all over the world. This phenomenon concerns both butterflies and moths. There are many factors influencing migratory flights (DINGLE et DRAKE 2007; SPARKS et al. 2007). In case of many species, the ways of migrations and conducive weather conditions have been confirmed in some part (CHAPMAN et al. 2002; ZHENG et al. 2011). Nevertheless, many researchers still emphasize that little has been found about this phenomenon (HOLLAND et al. 2006). Apart from very common and annually appearing species in Central Europe which constitute regular migrants such as i.a. Autographa gamma (LINNAEUS, 1758), Macdunnoughia confusa (STEPHENS, 1850), Mythimna l-album (LINNAEUS, 1767) or Agrotis segetum (DENIS & SCHIFFER- MÜLLER, 1775), there is an array of moths which immigrate very rarely 50 J. The most important component of this reserve stands for the Razelm-Sinoe Lagoon Complex placed in the southern part of the Danube Delta. In this work are shown the outmost results of Macrolepidoptera fauna (Insecta: Lepidoptera) of this region, based on faunistic research carried out during 2007-2018, in over 40 collecting trips. 552 species of Macrolepidoptera are listed, and as a new approach, the species are presented according to the most characteristic habitats they can be found in. The most important Macrolepidoptera species in this area are Megaspilates mundataria (Stoll, 1782), Eublemma porphyrinia (Freyer, 1845) and Cucullia argentina (Fabricius, 1787), only to be found in Europe in this region (on The European Union territory). A special attention shall be paid to a series of very rare species, located in this region, that are known in Romania, especially on the territory of the Razelm-Sinoe Lagoon Complex, e.g.: Lasiocampa eversmanni (Eversmann, 1843), Narraga tessularia (Metzner, 1845), Chariaspilates formosaria (Eversmann, 1837), Scopula orientalis (Alphéraky, 1876), Idaea sericeata (Hubner, [1813]), Eupithecia variostrigata (Alphéraky, 1876), Eupithecia biornata (Christoph, 1867), Ocnogyna parasita (Hübner, 1790), Rhyparioides metelkana (Lederer, 1861), Grammodes bifasciata (Petagna, 1787), Clytie syriaca (Bugnion, 1837), Leucania punctosa (Treitscke, 1825), Protarchanara brevilinea (Fenn, 1864), Dychagyris melanura (Kollar, 1846), Cervina (Gortyna) cervago (Eversmann, 1844), Cucullia biornata (Fischer v. Until now, 43 Eublemma species are known in Iran. Some records were obtained from the study of material deposited in the Collection of Entomology, Shahid Bahonar University of Kerman, as well as the recent expeditions carried out on the fauna of Noctuidae family in Iran. The Iranian records in different provinces are presented and also, some new faunal of species are added. Keywords: Eublemma, Iran, fauna, Noctuidae. 1. Introduction Eublemma was first described by Hübner in 1821. This genus belongs to the family Noctuidae and subfamily Eublemminae of Order Lepidoptera. Some species of the genus Eublemma are predators of some insects, such as Eublemma scitula which is an important predator of brown scale, [24] and most species of this genus are known as pest such as Eublemma amabilis which is very destructive to lac insect and lac encrustation [25]. Therefore it is an economically important [20] genus . The larvae feed oligophagously on various species of Asteraceae (Compositae). Most of the Eublemminae are multivoltine. In this paper provincial distribution, citation of the original description, type locality, and synonymy of each species and subspecies is presented. 2. Material and Methods During the recent expeditions, moth specimens were collected by using both portable and permanent light traps in different provinces of Iran, mainly in South and Southeast of the country.
