April 2013 – Dooral Roundup 1 EDITOR’S REPORT Changing Seasons By Judy Pope

I hope all our readers had a great Easter holiday break and we have certainly been blessed with some outstanding March weather. The thought of winter was put on the back burner temporarily...

e have had some interesting events unfold politically over the Wlast week with probably the most noteable being the leadership challenge that did not eventuate to the Prime Minister. Regardless of what most of the public think of Julia Gillard and how much she is incessantly vilified in the press on this occasion she stood firm and came out looking by far the least mud stained. There is still a long way to go until September and hopefully now they can get on with governing without being side swiped from within their own ranks. The polls are indicating a massive swing to Liberal though not a great deal of popularity for their current leader Tony Abbott. My youngest son turned 21 last month and it seems like I just blinked and the six boys are all grown up. My eldest son is now 30 and that makes me feel really old - and I am a grandmother to baby Brody. BUT I now have spare time and on the weekend I read a book from cover to cover, the first in a long time. You never know, I may start knitting soon!!

The first four of my children have travelled extensively and that is my next goal – to start exploring the world.

LOCAL PAPERS REPORT APRIL 2013 Dural and District Historical Society The ruins at Calabash Point

A story about the ruins of a stone building at the end of Calabash Road was written up by Les Geelan in “Memories of Value 1819-1986”.

alabash Road, leading out to Calabash Bay on C Berowra Creek, was in use as far back as 1897 and has an interesting background. This road was the first road constructed leading to the river, and was at that time expected to be linked with the road on the other side leading up to Berowra and the Northern Railway System. Quite a number of people moved to the foreshores of Calabash Bay and a number of homes were occupied. 4 Dooral Roundup – April 2013 LOCAL NEWS Local heroes support new Pool Rules

Hills residents and pool owners Nathan Hindmarsh and David Macallister have thrown their support behind the NSW Government’s new swimming pool rules.

r Macallister, the CEO of Royal Life Saving NSW Branch, said that people M often felt a false sense of security around their backyard pools as opposed to the beach. “The message doesn’t seem to be getting through to pool owners that it is vital to check and maintain pool fences all year around to protect young children from drowning in backyard pools,” Mr Macallister said. “Royal Life Saving figures show around 40 toddlers drown each and every year throughout Australia. Just as tragic is the fact that for every one drowning there are another three to four that are hospitalised through a near drowning event.” For Mr Hindmarsh, the former captain of the Parramatta Eels and father of three, safety of his children comes first. “You hear of children drowning far too often and in most cases it’s when a parent has been distracted for a really short period of time. Anything that ensures a child’s safety is a good thing.”

NEW RULES FOR POOLS iThe NSW Government has developed new rules for pools and spas. On 29 October 2012, the Swimming Pool Amendment Bill 2012 came into force. All pool owners will be required to register their pool on a new state-wide online register from the end of April 2013, and must have completed registration by 28 October 2013. Furthermore pool owners must: > Self-assess and state in the register that, to the best of their knowledge, their pool complies with the applicable standard. > Provide a valid swimming pool compliance certificate before being able to sell or lease a property with a pool. A $220 penalty applies for failing to register a swimming pool.

8 Dooral Roundup – April 2013 Dear Sir I’ve lived at Dural for 40-odd years but until recently I hadn’t taken any notice of the plaque by the door of the Dural Memorial Hall. The plaque records that the Hall was opened by a certain Sir Dudley de Chair in 1925. Now, that distinctive name rang a bell in my mind. Sir Dudley was Governor of NSW from 1923 to 1930 but my connection with the name is much more tenuous than that. When my parents were married in the English village of Worplesdon, Surrey, in 1934 the local newspaper, as was not uncommon in those days, published a list of the people who had given a wedding present to my parents and the presents they gave. Amongst the present-givers was a neighbour of my mother’s family called Mrs Annie Arbuthnot, the wife of a well to do stockbroker called Harold Arbuthnot. (She gave my mother a coal bucket.) Annie and Harold had an attractive and vivacious daughter called Thelma who had got married the previous year to a handsome chap called Somerset de Chair. As your readers will already have guessed, he was the younger son of the recently returned Governor of NSW, Sir Dudley de Chair and his wife Enid. Somerset was born in 1911 and while he was in NSW with his parents he went to school at The King’s School, Parramatta. I suppose he might even have been present on Wednesday, 4 November 1925 when his father opened the Memorial Hall at Dural. After getting married to Thelma Arbuthnot Somerset became a Conservative Party MP, served in the British army in World War II, and then got voted out in the Labour Party landslide of 1945. But he was back in the House of Commons again in 1950 when disaster struck. Thelma found out that her husband was keeping a mistress in , who was about to have his child. She kicked up a fuss and because of her prominent position on the political scene Somerset lost his Parliamentary seat as well as his wife. Somerset’s obituary in The Times of 10 January 1995 starts off with the observation that “The life of Somerset de Chair was as colourful as his name. He possessed charm, wealth and talent. He had four wives, innumerable mistresses and in many ways lived the sort of charmed life that Evelyn Waugh’s bright young things might have done, except that in his case he was still dedicated to enjoying the pleasures of life in the 1990s.” So, when you next visit the Dural Memorial Hall, spare a thought for Sir Dudley, his son Somerset and his daughter-in-law Thelma. She, by the way, subsequently married a hunting-and-fishing baronet called Sir Jocelyn Lucas, staying with him until her death in 1974.

New choir in The Hills

Singup Choirs is starting a new group in Dural on April 30th.

ingup choirs alone has over 300 members in its choirs S throughout Sydney. Singup choirs specialise in singing acappella (the voices do all the work and have all the fun) and includes Pop, Gospel and African songs. The Dural choir will be led by Suze Pratten. Suze has been teaching music and choirs for many years, most recently as Choral Director at the Coffs Harbour Conservatorium of Music, and has just moved to Sydney. “Choir members often tell me that singing is the thing they miss most from their school days. Singing in a group is the only musical experience most people have, and that’s often left behind when they leave school. Years down the track they realise how much they miss it, especially blokes.” says Stuart Davis, director of a group of Singup choirs around Sydney. “Of course it’s also a brilliant way to meet like-minded people, to become part of a group with a common purpose, and to get that buzz of singing in harmony for a couple of hours every week”. said Davis.

The Dural choir will meet on Tuesday nights in school term, 7.30 - 9.30pm at Lorien Novalis School. For more information email Stuart Davis - singup@optusnet. com.au or call 9665 8054.

Understanding Climate Change

Year 6 Hills Grammar students have been looking at climate change as an inquiry into how scientific knowledge impacts on people’s lives. The Investigating Climate Change workshop led by the CSIRO, gave the students practical experience and a wonderful insight into understanding the science of climate change.

Students rotated around ten hands-on activities, exploring renewable energy sources, CO2 levels in water and air, the temperature of CO2 and energy efficiency.

OAKHILL CHAMPIONS

All grand final teams are worthy of mention but recently two teams truly stood out. Oakhill College has never been able to win the 1st XI Cricket or the 1st V Girls Basketball ISA Division 1 competitions until these year. The girls led from start to finish in the Division 1 Basketball Grand Final and deserve the honour of being the first team to hold this shield aloft. Captained by Zoe Burke, the girls outclassed their Redlands opposition and finished the game 11 points clear. The 1st XI Cricket side played St Patrick’s College at Strathfield for their final. Captain Alex Pagano lost the toss and Oakhill were sent in to field. Nathan Smith took off stump out of the ground with the first ball of the day and this set the tone for the final. St Pat’s were bowled out for 156 on a pretty good batting wicket.

With four wickets down in the Oakhill innings, Alex Pagano and James Partridge came together in a partnership that would not be broken, and led the side to the first ever Division 1 cricket premiership.

18 Dooral Roundup – April 2013 Middle Dural Public School makes a splash!

The cheers for our small school swimmers almost lifted the roof off the aquatic centre at Galston last month. The students of Middle Dural Public School united with our friends at Hillside and Annangrove Public Schools, to race in the pool. The pride of both the competitors and their families in their schools was obvious – individual names were being chanted!.

Even the names of the kindies who raced in their floaties were known by all the other students.

Blue Ribbon Champions

Galston High School was once again excited to be champion school at the Castle Hill Show in 2013. This recognises the whole school effort across a wide variety of exhibits including Apiculture, Poultry, Arts, Crafts, Cooking, Horticulture, Equestrian and Visual arts and photography, where we were awarded the Agriculture Teachers Association Prize for overall point score winners in all categories.

This is the 22nd year Galston High won this award out of a possible 23 years.

Shave for a Cure

Year 12 Hills Grammar students lined up to lose their locks for cancer research this month. While the boys had their heads shaved, some of the girls lost years of growth from their plaits and ponytails.

Amidst the screams of shock and laughter the students managed to raise $1459 for cancer research.
