Copyright 2013 Shawn Patrick Gilmore THE INVENTION OF THE GRAPHIC NOVEL: UNDERGROUND COMIX AND CORPORATE AESTHETICS BY SHAWN PATRICK GILMORE DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2013 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Michael Rothberg, Chair Professor Cary Nelson Associate Professor James Hansen Associate Professor Stephanie Foote ii Abstract This dissertation explores what I term the invention of the graphic novel, or more specifically, the process by which stories told in comics (or graphic narratives) form became longer, more complex, concerned with deeper themes and symbolism, and formally more coherent, ultimately requiring a new publication format, which came to be known as the graphic novel. This format was invented in fits and starts throughout the twentieth century, and I argue throughout this dissertation that only by examining the nuances of the publishing history of twentieth-century comics can we fully understand the process by which the graphic novel emerged. In particular, I show that previous studies of the history of comics tend to focus on one of two broad genealogies: 1) corporate, commercially-oriented, typically superhero-focused comic books, produced by teams of artists; 2) individually-produced, counter-cultural, typically autobiographical underground comix and their subsequent progeny. In this dissertation, I bring these two genealogies together, demonstrating that we can only truly understand the evolution of comics toward the graphic novel format by considering the movement of artists between these two camps and the works that they produced along the way. -

FANAC Fan History Project UPDATE 12 April 17, 2020 Greetings and felicitations. I hope this update finds you all well – we are in living in surreal and frightening times. For us, wallowing in fan history is not only a passion but a good way to focus on something other than the pandemic news. Apparently, others feel the same way. We’ve had a number of scans from new contributors, as well as our stalwarts. In particular, new material has been provided by Rich Lynch, Sheryl Birkhead, Joe Patrizio, Mike Saler, Syd Weinstein and Tom Whitmore. CoNZealand Retro Hugo Awards nominations: We’ve completed our work on the Retro Hugos for 2020. Final nominees were announced recently by CoNZealand, and we’ve assembled a page of links for the fannish material nominated in the categories of Best Related Work, Best Fanzine and Best Fan Writer. Our webmaster, Edie Stern, combed through all the 1944 fan publications available on the net to make the list as complete as possible. We want to thank CoNZealand, Steve Davidson (Amazing Stories), Mike Glyer (File 770), Dave Langford (Ansible), Andrew Porter (news lists) and Locus for promoting and linking to our effort. We have passed what feel to us like some significant milestones in our archiving - over 10,000 fanzine issues and over 150,000 pages scanned. Fans get inspired by books, movies and television programmes to create all kinds of fan work; whether it is fan fiction, fan art, doujinshi, cosplay, or any other creations. Furthermore, the thesis will explore fan culture as it presents itself in Japan and compare it to fan culture in Europe and the USA. Davis Thesis Committee Approval: Mark Drayse, Department of Geography & the Environment, Chair Jonathan Taylor, Department of Geography & the Environment Zia Salim, Department of Geography & the Environment Summer, 2017 ABSTRACT Japanese animation, commonly referred to as anime, has earned a strong foothold in the American entertainment industry over the last few decades. Anime is known by many to be a more mature option for animation fans since Western animation has typically been sanitized to be “kid-friendly.” This thesis explores how this came to be, by exploring the following questions: (1) What were the differences in the development and perception of the animation industries in Japan and the United States? (2) Why/how did people in the United States take such interest in anime? (3) What is the role of anime conventions within the anime fandom community, both historically and in the present? These questions were answered with a mix of historical research, mapping, and interviews that were conducted in 2015 at Anime Expo, North America’s largest anime convention. This thesis concludes that anime would not have succeeded as it has in the United States without the heavy involvement of domestic animation fans. Fans created networks, clubs, and conventions that allowed for the exchange of information on anime, before Japanese companies started to officially release anime titles for distribution in the United States. -

His first novel, Neuromancer, is the first novel ever to win the Hugo, Nebula and Philip K. Dick awards. Neuromancer, which has been considered to be one of the influential science fiction novels written in the last twenty-five years, inspired a whole new genre in science fiction writing referred to as "cyberpunk". Gibson was born in 1948 in Conway, South Carolina. He moved to Toronto in the late 1960s and then to Vancouver in the early 1970s. Gibson studied English at the University of British Columbia. He began writing science fiction short stories while at UBC. In 1979 Gibson wrote "Johnny Mnemonic" which was published in Omni magazine. An editor at Ace books encouraged him to try writing a novel. This novel would become Neuromancer which was published in 1984. After Neuromancer, Gibson wrote Count Zero (1986), Mona Lisa Overdrive (1988), and Virtual Light (1993). He collaborated with Bruce Sterling in writing The Difference Engine (1990). Gibson has also published numerous short stories, many of which appeared in a collection of his work, Burning Chrome (1986). Scope and Content Fonds consists of typescript manuscripts and copy-edited, galley or page proof versions of all five of Gibson's novels (to 1993) as well as several short stories. -
