But that is a false industry which makes us "too busy to pray,” and a false criterion' which would permit a substitute for prayer. Because of the drift in presenting the gospel to the people, many churches arc filled.'with ungodly members, Esthclical teachings have taken- the place of the gospel of the Son of God, with the result that even the official boards of many churches are made up of men and womefi who know nothing THE PREACHERS MAGAZINE about Jesus Christ experimentally, but who are much at hoplc at card parties and dances and even at worse places of sin and dissipation. h " But,ns wc thought of these thinss, we were reminded that the shortcomings of others but' "bring heavier responsibilities upon the faithful. When others neglect the fundamental themes one by one, wc must add such themes to our list of “ specialties." Anti from this point of-view, the full gospel preacher of today has no room whatever to complain, for almost the. whole field of essential truth is so largely neglected that his own theme field is.wider than cvcr.beforc. Recently we heard a sermon on "The Devil.’’ The material was practically alt takcrifroift ‘ the Bible, speculation occupying but a small place, and yet for the better part of an hour . the preacher kept the interest of. the'people and many expressed themselves as being wonderfully instructed, warned and helped. And 1 am confident that an orthodox sermon on God would be just as new and just as interesting to the average audience today. ■ Thirty years ago, when I entered the ministry, wc supposed' that holiness was the neglcctcd theme, and we offered as.an apology (or our continuous emphasis upon it■ the fact thit wc had' to preach it for ourselves and for the many prcachers who failed to preach on it. But now there arc so many themes for which wc must atone that it is really a wonderfully easy thing to be an “ unusual" preacher. About all one has to do is to stick to the fundamental themes of the gospcland it will soon be nofced ab()Ut that he is "unusual." : There is less excuse* than ever for going to the newspaper and to the magazine for themes. Go to the wonderlut-storehouses of Christian history( doctrine, and biography, Preach on the most foundational themes of our holy religion. Bring out the old and essential truths as the best defense against modern heresies. There never was a more timcty hour for the preacher of the old- time gospel than right now, and even the"humblest prodaimer of the pure Word of God can thank God that he is needed and needed much.     Gordon A. Craig President American Historical Association 1982 11 } Gordon Alexander Craig, president of the American Historical Association, is the J. E. Wallace Sterling Professor of the Humanities at Stanford University. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1913; at the age of twelve he immigrated to the U.S. from Canada with his parents. He attended Princeton University where he re ceived his AB in 1936, the MA in 1939, and his PhD in 1941. During this period he was also a Rhodes Scholar to Oxford where he received a B.Litt. in 1938. His field is ndern Europe with research interests focusing on Germany since 1648, diplomacy, and military affairs. Professor Craig taught as an instructor at Yale Uni versity from 1939 to 1941; after two years he returned to Princeton to teach there. He remained at Princeton for the next twenty years: from 1941 to 1943 as an instruc tor, from 1943 to 1949 as associate professor, and from 1950 to 1961 as full professor. Concurrently he was a visiting professor at Columbia University in 1947—48 and in 1949—50. In 1961 he imjved to Stanford where he teaches three days a week to classes of four hundred students. He is widely regarded as aong the greatest of the uni versity’s teachers, and in recognition of his vital con tribution to scholarship and teaching he became the first J. E. Wallace Sterling Professot of the Humanities in 1969, a rank he still holds. He chaired the history de partment from 1972 to 1975 and again from 1978 to 1979, and had a great impact in strengthening the department.

They were not designed by him to be complete genealogies even of the families which * are t reated of, but, as the title indicates, genealogical notes to assist others in tracing out their family histories. Mr. Goodwin had begun to print the work, making his final cor rections as the proof-sheets were brought to him, and had proceeded as far as page 68, when the printing was suspend ed, as he hoped temporarily, by a severe attack of disease, but as the event proved, finally, so far as he was concerned, by his death.     I For more than a quarter of a century Arthur Stanley Link, editor of The Papers of Woodrow Wilson and George Henry Davis ‘86 Professor of Anerican History at Princeton University, has been recognized as the world’s preeminent Wilson scholar. For a decade or longer he also has been acclaimed as the dean of the editors of political documents. In 1951, and again in 1g61, volumes in his extended biography of the twenty-sixth President won the Bancroft Prize. This spring he joined C. Vann Woodward and John Hope Franklin as the only hi stori ans to be president of the Anerican Historical Association, the Drganization of Pmerican Historians, and the Southern Historical Association. A man of strong convictions and imposing public presence, Professor Link is esteemed by intimates for his warmth, generosity, and loyalty. He was born on August 8, 1928 in New Market, Virginia, where his father was pastor of a Lutheran church. Educated in the public schools of North Carolina, he was graduated as a Phi Beta Kappa from the University of North Carolina in 1941. He then entered the graduate history program of that institution and studied with Fletcher M. Green, who directed his dissertation, and Howard K. Beale among others. Within four years he had earned the doctorate. Mean while he served as an instructor at North Carolina State and at Chapel Hill and spent nine months as a Rosenwald Fellow in Henry Steele Connnager’s seminar at Columbia University before joining the Princeton faculty in 1945. By 1947, the year the first volume of his biography of Wilson appeared under the title, Woodrow Wilson: The Road to the White [louse, he had published eight articles, including one in the journal of this association.
