  • President's Monthly Letter Feast of St. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, Archangels September 2020 Dear Guardian Families
President’s Monthly Letter Feast of St. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, Archangels September 2020 Dear Guardian Families, Happy Feast of Sts. Michael, Gabriel and Raphael, Archangels! Yesterday we celebrated our patronal feast and the 3rd anniversary of the dedication of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Chapel. As our fourth year is now underway, we can look back and celebrate the many accomplishments of SMA in the past and look forward to our exciting future together, confident that our patron, St. Michael, will defend us in the battle. Whenever I visit the doctor, there are four words I never like to hear: “Now this may hurt.” That message brings about two responses in me, the first is one of dread… it means I’m going to be experiencing something I really don’t want! Secondly, I brace in anticipation of what is about to happen; I’m able to make myself ready for the event. September is the month of Our Lady of Sorrows (in Latin, the seven “dolors”). When Mary encountered Simeon in the temple, she heard the same message in a more intense form, “this is going to hurt.” The prophet told her, A sword will pierce through your own soul. Mary, a new mother still in wonder at the miraculous birth of her child, now hears that her life is going to be integrally tied to his sufferings. So September is always a month linked to compassion; the compassion Mary had for her son and has for us. It is also a reminder of the compassion we can have for each other.

The private revelation of Antonia d’Astonac and The History of the Chaplet of these prayers were approved by Pope Pius IX in St. Michael the Archangel Chaplet of St. 1851. Saint Michael, appearing one day to Antonia Michael the Archangel d’Astonac, a most devout Servant of God, told her that he wished to be honored by nine salutations corresponding to the nine Choirs of Angels, which should consist of one Our Father and three Hail Marys in honor of each of the Angelic Choirs. It can influence how smoothly we navigate through to explore the baby names in a life or, alternatively, how hard it can be for us to get multi-cultural society. ahead (1,4). Over the last 70 years, for example, researchers have tried to gauge the effect of having an unusual name on a person. It is thought that our identity is partly shaped by the way we are treated by other people - a concept psychologists call the "looking-glass self" (2) - and our name, therefore, has the potential to color our interactions with society (3,4). More recent studies present a mixed picture (1,3,4), showing children with unusual names may learn to control impulses because they may be teased and then get used to people repeatedly asking them about their name. Some scholars have explained that children with unusual names actually benefit from that experience by learning to control their emotions or their impulses (1,3,4). Various names are popular among different social classes, and these groups have different opportunities and goals (1). The name we give our baby can stem from traditional, regional, historical or religious sources (5). In addition, a child's name can also hint at what his or her parents’ expectations are for their children within the particular society in which they live. Therefore, it is very interesting to explore baby names in a multi-cultural society like New York City, which has distinct ethnic groups: White, Hispanic, Black, and Asian.

  • Blessed Michael Mcgivney Novena
Blessed Michael McGivney PRAYERS AND DEVOTIONS lessed Michael McGivney, a model parish priest and founder of the Knights of Columbus, was recognized as a “saint” in his day by the people closest to him. When he was named “Blessed” by Pope Francis on Oct. 31, 2020, the Church Bdeclared what many had long believed the holy soul of Father McGivney lives today to intercede for us before the throne of God. Over the years, thousands of favors have been aributed to Father McGivney’s inter- cession, as Knights, their families and Catholics throughout the world pray to him in times of need. He is known especially for favors related to employment and nances, reconciling family members, overcoming addiction, recovering from serious illness, as well as conversion and return to the Church. Coinciding with issues Father McGivney dealt with as a parish priest on earth, these favors show his ongoing care and concern for those who call upon him in faith. In a spirit of total trust in God, we invoke Blessed Michael McGivney’s intercession, for our own intentions and for the needs of others, knowing that one more miracle is required for canonization, sainthood in the Catholic Church. We pray, most of all, that through the holy witness of Father McGivney, many will be brought closer to God and that we ourselves may renew our love of God and neighbor. • 09-29 Archangels, Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael
September 29th is the Memorial of the Archangels. Michael is the patron of security forces and of the sick; Gabriel is the patron of telecommunications and the Postal Service; Raphael is the patron of travelers and the blind. Saint Gregory tells us that “the word “angel” denotes a function … they can only be called angels when they deliver some message. Moreover … those who proclaim messages of supreme importance are called archangels.”i Michael’s name means “Who is like God?” Michael is sent when wondrous power is required “so that his action and his name may make it clear that no one can do what God does by his superior power.”ii • In the Book of Daniel, the Archangel Michael protects Israel. “The prince of the kingdom of Persia stood in my way for twenty-one days, until finally Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me” (10:13). • So to, in the book of Revelation. When Satan opposes God and his people, “then Michael and his angels cast the dragon and his angels out of heaven” (Rev 12:7–9). • As patron of the sick, he appeared in Rome in the 2nd century and stopped a plague. • He came to the aid of Joan of Arc as she fought to save France from England during the Hundred Years War.iii Gabriel whose name means “God’s Strength” or “God is my Warrior.” Gabriel announces the greatest message of all. God will be with us. Jesus, the Son of God, will also be the Son of Mary. He comes to Zechariah and announces the birth of John the Baptist.
