TONIGHT’S GAME -The Penguins and Washington Capitals play Game 3 (TV: NBC Sports Network; Radio: 105.9 The X) at PPG Paints Arena. -Pittsburgh not only will be attempting to regain a series lead tonight, but the Pens will be hoping to avoid losing three-straight home games. The Pens dropped Games 2 and 5 last round against the following a 7-0 home victory to open the postseason. -The Penguins haven’t lost three-straight playoff home games in a single playoff year since dropping Games 2, 5 and 7 against Tampa Bay in 2011. That stretch marked the only time in the Sidney Crosby/Evgeni Malkin era that the Pens dropped three-straight home games in a single year. Neither player dressed for that series.

QUICK HITS

1) Under head coach Mike Sullivan, the Penguins are 16-3 all-time in the playoffs following a loss (7-1 in 2016; 7-2 in 2017; 2-0 this year).

2) Penguins goaltender Matt Murray is 10-1 all-time in the playoffs following a loss.

3) The Penguins fell to 2-1 in the playoffs this year without Evgeni Malkin. That dropped the club’s all-time record with one of he or Sidney Crosby to 5-1. Pittsburgh was 3-4 in the 2011 playoff series against Tampa Bay when both were sidelined for the duration of that matchup.

4) The Penguins fell to 0 for 2 in the playoffs on coaches challenges after Jakub Vrana’s goal held up in Game 2 at Washington. Pittsburgh also unsuccessfully challenged the Flyers’ fifth goal in Game 6 of their First Round series. During the regular season, the Pens were 3 for 5 (60%).

TEAM NOTES:

STREAK EXTENDED Jake Guentzel collected the second assist on Kris Letang’s goal in Game 2. That helper ran Guentzel’s active point streak to six games (6G-7A-13PTS). Guentzel’s six-game point streak is tied for the longest recorded in the NHL playoffs thus far this year. It also marks the best stretch of hockey Guentzel has played in his brief career. Guentzel’s longest regular-season point streak is five games, set in his final five appearances of the 2016-17 season (5G-3A-8PTS).

D-MEN STEP UP Pittsburgh’s defensemen put forth a gutsy effort over the final 35 minutes of Game 2. The Pens had to play the duration of that time span with just five blueliners after Brian Dumoulin was knocked out of the game. Pittsburgh’s D-men handled the challenge admirably. Kris Letang scored the Pens’ lone goal, and led the club in shots (5), attempts (8) and blocked shots (6). The only defender who logged more minutes than Letang’s 26:21 was Justin Schultz, who assisted on Letang’s goal while playing a game-high 27:24 minutes. It was the most minutes Schultz has played in a playoff game in his NHL career. Seeing Schultz have success against the Caps isn’t anything new. He has points in six of his last eight playoff games against Washington dating back to last year’s series (2G-5A-7PTS). He’s also had the best offensive game of his regular-season career (4 assists) against Washington back on Jan. 16, 2017. Another defender that stepped up was Jamie Oleksiak. He skated a playoff-best 20:51 minutes, tying Tom Wilson with a game-high seven hits. In the two games prior to Game 2, Oleksiak had skated a total of 19:34 minutes. He also hadn’t logged 20 minutes since Feb. 9 at Dallas (20:37). In 47 regular-season games with the Pens, Oleksiak played more than 20 minutes just five times. Overall, the Penguins’ defensemen were quite active, even as they all assumed larger workloads. Pens’ blueliners combined to record 14 of 33 shots (42.4%) and 35 of 75 shot attempts (46.7%).

HEARTBEAT OF PITTSBURGH Patric Hornqvist changed Pittsburgh’s fortunes in Game 1 with the goal that began the three-goal scoring spree and sparked the 3-2 comeback win. He was a presence once again in Game 2, but for the first time in this year’s playoffs, he didn’t record a point. He had points in each of his first five games that he played in this year’s playoffs (missed Games 4-5 vs. PHI). If you go back further to the Pens’ series last year against Nashville, Hornqvist had points in seven-straight playoff games (4G-6A-10PTS) before going scoreless in Game 2.

SID DOES SID THINGS Sidney Crosby had another multiple-point effort (1G-1A) in Game 1, the 61st of his NHL playoff career. That allowed him to surpass Jari Kurri for sole possession of third place on the NHL’s all-time list for multiple point playoff games. (108) and Mark Messier (77) top the list. Crosby saw his five-game point streak come to a close in Game 2.
