Disposal of Etrogim

If the Etrog you used over this Sukkot was from Israel it must be dealt with in a special manner because of the laws of Shemitta. An instruction sheet was given out with your Etrog purchase at KMS, but in case you did not receive one or you misplaced it, here are some instructions:

1) A Shemitta Etrog may not be thrown out. Please keep it in its box for about two weeks until it begins to harden. Once it is hard the Etrog may be discarded but should still be discarded in a respectful manner. It may be throw it out in its box or wrapped in something like a plastic bag.

2) Etrogim may be used for cooking but all edible parts must be consumed and not discarded. If you cannot consume all parts then you may throw them away in the manner described above. Please be careful to mark any Etrog food made as "kedushat sheviit" and treat it in the same manner as the Etrog itself.

Rabbi Mendlowitz will be coming to KMS October 18 after Mincha/Maariv (at 6:05 pm) to collect any Etrogim you wish to get rid of. There will be a small refund to anyone who returns an Etrog to Rabbi Mendlowitz.

Contact Rabbi Weinberg ([email protected]) or Rabbi Mendlowitz ([email protected]) with any questions.
