‘How to’ conduct a palm eading

Deciphering the lines Choose hand, different meanings: For females, the right hand is what you're born with, and left is what you've accumulated throughout your life (males vise versa)

-Identify the 4 lines Heart line : -can be read in either direction (from the pinkie finger to the index finger or vice versa) depending on the tradition being followed -believed to indicate emotional stability, romantic perspectives, depression, and cardiac health http://www.wikihow.com/Read-Palms Head line: -represents a person's learning style, communication approach, intellectualism, and thirst for knowledge -curved line is associated with creativity and spontaneity, while a straight line is linked with practicality and a structured approach Life line: -begins near the thumb and travels in an arc towards the wrist -reflects physical health, general well being, and major life changes (for example, cataclysmic events, physical injuries, and relocations -Its length is not associated with length of life Fate line: -this is also known as the line of destiny, and it indicates the degree to which a person's life is affected by external circumstances beyond their control- it begins at the base of the palm. -interpreting the hand and fingers Hand shape (fingers compared to palms) -Earth -Wind -Water -Fire -“mounts” -hand / finger size

tracking the migration of the monarch butterfly

Why -monarch butterflies not able to survive the cold winters of most of the United States and Canada so they migrate south and west each autumn -the larval food plants do not grow in their winter overwintering sites, so the spring generation must fly back north to places where the plants are plentiful -migration usually starts in about October of each year, but can start earlier if the weather turns http://www.monarchwatch.org/tagmig/fallmap.htm cold sooner than that. -spend their winter hibernation in Mexico and some parts of Southern California where it is warm all year long -If the monarch lives in the Eastern states, usually east of the Rocky Mountains, it will migrate to Mexico and hibernate in oyamel fir trees. If the monarch butterfly lives west of the Rocky mountains, then it will hibernate in and around Pacific Grove, California in eucalyptus trees When -monarchs emerging at different times of the year do different things -monarchs that emerge in the spring and summer months become reproductive within a few days http://www.learner.org/jnorth/images/graphics/ -monarchs emerging in the fall are in reproductive diapause, which is a state of suspended monarch/monarch_map092998.gif development of the reproductive organs. Even though these butterflies look like summer adults, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monarch_butter y they won’t mate or lay eggs until the following spring. -When the late summer and early fall monarchs emerge from their pupae, they are physically and behaviorally different from those emerging in the summer. The shorter days, cooler air, and milkweed senescence (aging) of late summer trigger changes. In the northern part of their range, this occurs around the end of August, when monarchs begin to emerge in reproductive diapause. -Diapause is controlled by the nervous system and by hormones. Environmental factors signaling the onset of unfavorable conditions are involved in triggering this physiological response. These factors include day length (most important), temperature, and host plant quality. -Hibernate in trees at sites in Mexico and southern California , clustering together, covering whole tree trunks and branches. As the winter ends and the days grow longer, the monarchs become more active and begin a 3-5 week period of intense mating activity -In Mexico, they begin to leave their roosts during the middle of March, flying north and east looking for milkweed plants on which to lay their eggs. Where -go to the very same trees each and every year when they migrate -only insect that migrates to a warmer climate that is 2,500 miles away each year -some migratory journeys extend more than 3,500 km from eastern Canada and the northeastern United States to Mexico -through tagging programs learned that they were overwintering areas in the Transverse Neovolcanic Mountains of Central Mexico migrate to overwinter in 10–13 discrete colonies located in the Oyamel forests of central Mexico http://www.learner.org/jnorth/tm/monarch/ Hundreds of thousands of monarchs have been tagged over the past five decades, with only 125 MexicanOWSitesA_B.html recoveries from Mexico occurring since 1975 How -they possess a time-compensated sun compass (how they navigate) reading sources: http://www.pnas.org/content/99/15/10162.full http://www.monarch-butterfly.com/monarch-migration.html http://www.pnas.org/content/95/26/15436.short http://www.monarchlab.org/Lab/Research/Topics/Migration /WhenToLeave.aspx http://www.monarchbutter yfund.org/challenge

time to cplete one nicole mannell . typography3 ide cycle (minutes) week two: ‘Layout O ganization’

- rst planning of the timeline: idea was to have time on one axis, and height on the other -didn’t work out as there was too much of a size dierence between the tallest and shortest rides to have t well on the page: also length could not be done accurately as when they give the length of a ride, it is not length as in the area it takes up, but the length of the track with all it’s loops and hills -instead incorporated graphs to show the exact length and height and came as close as I could for the images with the data available

-these were ideas for supplementary infographics to go on the page if there was space, to give more detailed information about the par- such as; the season hours, average number of people that can t on a ride, the ticket price and average min. rider height

week three: ‘Ride Development’

-the rst thing I did in creating the rides was to nd the best possible images of each of them from pro le point of view and with as much ride in the shot as possible (it was harder the larger the ride and longer the track length) -for some of the images I had to rely on digital recreations of the ride people had made for roller coaster tycoon, as well as track plans and photos of the actual ride -some of the ride drawings are based o of one photo and some are more “artistic renderings” based o of the combined sources I mentioned previously -after nding these, I created the graph to the right so that each of the rides would have comparatively correct heights -I then drew each ride on tracing paper over the graph so that I could use the same graph over and over again -I then scanned the drawings into the computer and used the pen tool to trace over them and create vectors (some of the details, like all of the wooden hatching on the Minebuster, I didn't draw out as I knew it would be easy enough to add in illustrator) -the rides were then sized down to t the timeline on to the correct size of paper and coloured according to the most dominant colour in the real ride’s colour scheme

week three: ‘Ride Development’

-I had a really hard time nding a good image to work from for Dragon Fire, so I almost ended up just representing it with its iconic 2 loops, but at the last minute I found an old photo of the ride that I was able to work from- I am much happier that I could keep this ride consistent with the others in trying to show as much of it as I could nicole mannell . typography3 nicole mannell . typography3

week three: ‘Legend Creation’

-wanted to create a legend that wasn’t labeled legend: solution was to incorporate it the heading, like banner -another problem was finding a way to add the name that wasn’t obtrusive or difficult to read

Layout presented on week 3 critique (of the size allowed)

3.28 Issues 3.12 3 3 -dividing the time line makes it disjointed, hard to tell 2.55 that it is supposed to be one single time line

2.04 -the rides look to “cramped” and close to the time line - try 2 2 1.58 1.55 1.47 1.46 1.45 1.43 lifting them o - maybe needing a keyline under them 1.32

-get ride of the grey border around the dimonds marking the 0.44 ride dates- obscures the colour: also make them larger

-make the dates that the park changed owners the same size 2006 and shade as the other dates: the brackers underneith enough 2002 2003 2004 2008 2011 2012 present day -the colour coding not enough for the small ags, add the owned by ‘Paramount Parks’ owned by ‘Cedar Fair’ time to cplete one names of the rides as labels, also add a “background” (the grid ide cycle (minutes) that would be on the bar graph), lightly to ground them

-get rid of heavy brackers underneith ag graphs, to heavy on the page: use the same type of line is the owner brackers

-try adding a shaded background to divide up the page Thrill Rides At Canadas Wonderland

time to cplete one height of ide (ft) ollercoaster ide cycle (minutes) track length (ft) Final week four: ‘Reflection ’

The creation of the project was both enjoyable and frustrating. I had never really attempted an info graphic before, although having for a long time been interested in doing so. At the beginning of the project I think I was a bit confused as to the type of information I needed, and that basically set me back a week, having to look for a new topic that I could gather more hard data and statistics on. Having said that, I am extremely happy with the end result and am thankful for the turn in the project that led me here. It was de nitely a dierent experience from other design assignments, and I think the biggest thing I learned was to let the data lead the direction thatit should be displayed- not trying to make it t into a certain look. I hope that my nal piece embodies this sentiment and is both clear in it’s delivery of the data, as well as fun to look at, (as it is about an ).

Something I found surprising while working on this project actually happened during my research. I never knew how many roller coaster fan clubs and devotion sites there were or that people spend hours and hours of time making detailed recreations of these real rides in games like roller coaster tycoon. Having said this, these recreations were quite helpful and I am thankful to these people and their sites. The only regret that I really have with this project is that it cannot be larger. It would be nice to have it longer so that the timeline is not as squished, the ride icons could be bigger and there could be more white space. I think that later I would like to try and expand the infographic, making it much larger and incorporating more of the rides in the Canada’s Wonderland theme park, as well as adding other pieces of data, (such as when the park is open, ticket price, when fast passes were introduced, fun facts about the rides and other assorted things I learned while researching the park. Although it was tough, it was worth it, and I look forward to working on more infographics in the future.
