THE MAGAZINE FOR

5th March 2019 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

A world class education for global learners Over the past year, the Executive Leaders of the Multi-Academy Trust have been meeting regularly to discuss the idea of joining forces to develop a style of education that can be delivered to our students to give them the best chance of dealing with the 21st Century world in which they live. Our Leaders decided that by joining together, member schools of the Trust would benefit from shared resources, methods of teaching and best practice, thereby providing the very best education available to the young people in their care. The process of actually making this happen has involved hard work for each of the schools who originally aspired to make up the organisation of the ‘Leading Edge Academies Partnership’ and inevitably some changes have taken place along the way. We Are Leading Edge

Mrs Davey, CEO, has been working tirelessly to bring the whole thing together and we have had to overcome a number of hurdles to gain accreditation from the Department for Education. On April Fools’ Day I was right royally ‘got’ by Liam! Well done!

I am delighted to report that this week, also on 1st April, we became an officially recognised Multi-Academy Trust and can now boast that we are indeed a:

The Partnership currently has five member schools: Mounts Bay Academy, , St Hilary School and Ludgvan School. We are confident that from 1st May we will also be joined by River Academy. GoodTo find Luck out Molly more about the Partnership, why not take a look at our new website here: www.leadingedgeacademies.org The Leading Edge Team

Finally, may I take this opportunity to remind you that during the Easter holiday we will be running a number of revision sessions in preparation for the forthcoming GCSE Examinations. Students are strongly encouraged to attend these valuable sessions, as well as enjoy the break, knowing you have done your best. Keep Calm And Be Prepared Best wishes for a very happy Easter!

Science in Context

Mr Raggett's Year 8 Science classes have been investigating how heat is transferred and while looking at infrared radiation we were able to borrow a thermal imaging camera from Fire Headquarters and use this to see how this is used in a firefighter’s role.

The students were able to see how the equipment is used and were given a search exercise to put this to the test. In full fire kit, they were asked to do a search of the corridors and rooms looking for casualties who might be in the building. This was made more realistic when wearing blacked out breathing apparatus masks! Could they get into the kit and be ready in 90 seconds?

Putting our learning into context enables the students to embed the topics and ideas and link the subject material.

ELEMENT Project Year 7 Inspired by Fire

This Week the Year 7 Element classes have been putting into practice their survival skills. As part of the 'Why do we need nature in order to survive?' module, they have been learning to build shelters and fires. This week they used a clever device called a ‘Kelly Kettle’ to make a fire and cook food, well, pot noodles anyway. Well done to all!

Outstanding Baking

Brioche is a pastry of French origin that is similar to highly enriched bread. There is a lot to understand about how to properly handle the dough as the fat content can get in the way of gluten-bond formation.

This technical challenge did not faze Katie, 10 Green, who achieved a strong deep crumb, glossy, springy beautifully formed interior and you could smell the flavour before you even ate a Di Vinci awarding worthy piece. Report by: Mr Bromfield

EXCELLENCE REWARD Passport To Success

Report by: Mr T Williams Every week we will be showing you some examples of work that have merited a reward. This week Mr T Williams has shared some examples from the Maths Department.

Initiative and endeavour has been shown in students' approaches to learning, demonstrating hard work and determination.

Students have been delighted to receive recognition for their efforts.

Izzy, 8 Cool, received her sticker for continued hard work and effort with her maths in life skills lessons.

Abby made really great progress with Standard Form by splitting the problem into small pieces. At each stage, she exampled her thinking and then moved onto the next challenge.

Good Luck Molly

This week Year 10 have been working on ‘Applying the Cosine Rule to calculate unknown sides and angles’. Students have shown true grit and determination, which has translated into great success and learning. Well done! Jonathan 10 Purple.

Well Done Morgan! BE ADVENTUROUS

Marines Visit

During their PE lesson last week Year 10 students were put through their paces when a Royal Commando team visited the Academy. Students took part in team activities, physical challenges and mental agility tasks. It was great fun, hard work and something really different to their normal lessons!

Since January this year women have been allowed to join the Royal Marines and this has opened the doors for all students interested.

Radio Award Nominations Former MBA student, Maisy-Sky Lumbers, has been nominated for two Young Arias awards. The awards, which celebrate radio production by the U18s, are run by BBC radio and the commercial radio sector.

With BBC Radio 1’s Matt Edmondson and Mollie King and KISS FM’s Breakfast team Tom Green and Daisy Maskell on board as ambassadors, the Young Arias aim to widen the talent pool coming into British radio and provide an opportunity for young people to access the industry.

A whole range of audio from potential stars was submitted and the judges had the daunting task of shortlisting only three entries per category. Maisy- Sky has amazingly found herself nominated in two categories; ‘Best Factual’ and ‘Rising Talent Award 16-18’. She has been invited to attend the award ceremony in May, which takes place at BBC Broadcasting House. The winners and nominees are promised a range of ‘money can’t buy’ prizes, including industry mentoring, studio tours and even a show on national radio.

While at MBA Maisy-Sky was part of the MBA Radio Club. She has had shows broadcast on Coast FM and currently presents a regular Sunday show, ‘Songs from the Shows’ on Truro’s CHBN.

“Spotting and developing new talent for the British audio industry is a hugely important part of what we do across BBC radio so I’m delighted to be joining forces with the “commercial radio sector for the Young Arias. It’s quite appropriate that BBC Sounds, our new digital audio destination, is sponsoring the Rising Star categories in these inaugural awards.” - Bob Shennan, Director of Radio and Music ” BE CURIOUS

Caph Finals

Congratulations to Savannah, Isabella and Emma who got through to the finals of the caph competition. They came second and should be very proud of what they have achieved. They engaged well with the judges, making them laugh and focus on their project idea. Even though they came second, I am pretty sure I heard a conversation on the bus about their plans for next year! Never give up! Well done girls, you did the Academy very proud Report by: Miss Wheeler

Nature at MBA The seven-spot ladybird is the most common ladybird in Europe. Their distinctive spots and bright colour make them unappealing to predators. Both the adults and larvae are predators of aphids and therefore are good to see in your garden. Coccinella septempunctata is it’s Latin genus species.

Traditionally, ladybirds are believed to bring good luck. Some say where a ladybird goes true love will follow soon after. Superstition states that killing a ladybird will bring you bad luck.

Poly Tunnel Irrigation Project

MBA’s project funding application for a watering system for the poly tunnel has been accepted as part the Calor Rural Community Fund competition.

The automated watering system would help us keep our emerging plants and produce watered throughout the holidays and weekends. It is hoped that any fruit and vegetables grown will be used in the school canteen and donated to local food banks.

We can only get our hands on the money, however, if our project receives enough votes! Voting opens on 2nd May 2019, so keep an eye open in the newsletter and we will update you on how to vote closer to the time.

If you are interested in getting involved in the poly tunnel project, see Miss Wheeler in the science prep room.

Hat Trick

Mr Troup is sporting this year’s design of the Potato Starch 100% compostable wrapper. He decided to fashion it as a hat to encourage Year 9 students to consider the life cycle of the products they use and the impact these products and their wrappers or containers have on the environment.

As a shower cap this wrapper would have a limited lifespan - boo! However, it will decompose long before it becomes a strangle hazard to a turtle - yay! BE CREATIVEBE CREATIVE

International Year of the Periodic Table

2019 has been designated by UNESCO as the International Year of the Periodic Table (IYPT), marking the 150th anniversary of the Mendeleev periodic table, which is an iconic image and a vital tool to all who learn and work in science at all stages of their learning and careers.

During the course of the year we will be writing about some elements and what we do with them at the Academy and what they are used for in the ‘real world’.
