Longfellow once said a book is a treasure chest of thoughts where the thoughts are stored away until someone opens it to dwell upon those thoughts. To this end we have edited this book. Dedication ..

To the untiring efforts of Misses Mary and Jane Dilley, two of the most faithful, respected, and loved members of the faculty of Alliance High School, we dedicate this book.

During Mary's thirty-four years of service at Alliance High School, she has earned respect through her keen interest in the welfare of her students and the school in general. She has done commendable work with the National Honor Society ever since it was initiated into the Alliance school system. In the past she has served as Editor ial Advisor for the Chronicle, during which time she showed her versatility. She was the original Business Advisor for the school newspaper, The Red and Blue, and has held this position for the past twenty-six years. She will long be remembered not only for her deep interest and factual as well as applicable knowledge in the field of mathe matics but also for her spontaneous humor.

Jane Dilley has served on the faculty of Alliance High School for the past thirty- two and one-half years. She was co-sponsor of the class of 1924, at which time she, too, proved her versatility in all fields. For several years she coached Senior plays for which she received many honors. She can never be forgotten for the sincerity and earnestness with which she teaches Latin.

Threfore, to you, Mary, and to you, Jane, we, the student body of Alliance High School, do with all sincerity and humbleness dedicate this book. Miss Mary Dilley

There is the plink of the orchestra tuning up; the rustle of pro grams from the audience; the nervous coughs of excited seniors as they make sure that their caps are on straight. Now a hush falls over the auditorium; the silence of anticipation . . . broken by the opening strains of "Pomp and Circumstance"; fiddles, winds, and brass heralding the seniors . . . the class of 1950. Down the seemingly endless aisle . . . left, right, don't sway, left, right. There is Mom and Dad. There must be something in Mom's eye and Dad looks as though he has just swallowed a frog. I won der if they see me? . . . left, right, left. Down the aisle we go, and it seems but yesterday that we first came hesitatingly up the steps into the unknown world, "A. H. S." Let's see, that was 1946, how unimportant I felt then, Left, right, left. Then the light falls on my trembling hand and makes my class ring glisten even more than usual, I remember how we chose them with much discussion. Would it be gold, onyx, ruby, sapphire, pearl? Then the day finally arrived when we received the first order of rings. Closer now, there's Jim going across the stage. My he looks nervous. Just like he was the night of the prom. That was the night that I got a pink corsage. How beautiful it looked on my blue formal as we danced under the gas lights of our Gay Nineties Prom. Football in the stinging air; cokes and potatoe chips after the game in the coziness of the nearest snack shop; books; tests; danc ing; banquets; It's been fun; . . , Here I go . . . Here I go, up the steps, mustn't trip, now wait my turn to cross the . . , it's my turn now. Reach out my right hand, now shake hands, don't forget to say "thank you". Gee; I hope that no one sees these silly old tears in my eyes. What's the matter with me? Well, now we all have our diplomas in our hands; careful, don't drop it. Now we are marching out; left, right, left, right, There's Mom and Dad, both smiling now. Gee, I feel good. No wonder, I'm a graduate now, imagine, me, a graduate. Keep in step until we are out of the auditorium; left, right, left, right.

35 The Senior Class Presents: "Life With Father.

The Senior Class of 1950 chose the hilarious comedy, "Life With Father," to keep in line with the centennial celebration in Alliance. In keeping with this they tried to get a gay nineties atmosphere by having vaudeville acts between the acts of the play. The costumes lighting, and general stage effect exemplified the theaters of the 1900's.

The story centers around the eccentric Clare Day—the father who has never been baptized—and the efforts of his wife, sons, uncles, and cousins to save his questionable soul. The action of the play takes place in the Day's New York City home. The plot gives way to endless humor as father pursues his gay nineties habits.

The between acts vaudeville numbers which were typical of the "gay nineties", featuring duet dances and old melodies, were in charge of Miss Jane Bullock and Miss Marjorie Steltzer.

Fall Varieties was again this year a striking example of the fine teamwork that is present in "A. H. S." It was directed by Leland whitacre who has directed this production since its origin in 1940. The theme "From Dawn to Dusk" was vividly portrayed by the fine continuity of the show. The pajama chorus symbolized the dawn and was a striking opening using the new black light effect. The five choruses really made up the body of the show while the solo and ensemble numbers provided the network by which the show was tied together. There was included in this group: solo singers and dancers, acrobats, comedy routines, instrumentalists, and ensembles. The all- star chorus added the touch of midnight to the ending for which the black ballerina dresses swished to and fro across the stage, finishing their dance to the music of "Three O'Clock In The Morning." The show played two nights to appreciative audiences. Fall Va rieties is an activity which the high school sincerely hopes will con tinue for many years.

As the season of the pigskin got under way, the gridiron saw the Steubenville Central Catholic Crusaders fall beneath the onslaught of the Alliance Aviators to the score of 40 to 13. While still early in the season though, this victory was offset by a defeat in the second game of the Aviators, who buckled beneath the power of a heavy Toledo Waite eleven to the tune of 21 to 6, before a home crowd of Waite fans. The lone Alliance touchdown come on a line play bv Henrv Nicholson in the final quarter of play. With a victory and a defeat beneath their helmets Coach Mel Knowlton's gridders again felt the bitter taste of defeat, as they fell prey to a strong Mansfild Tyger t^am It was only after three quarters of "rough ball lugging," that the Tygers succeeded in defeating the Aviators. The scoreboard showed a 14-14 tie at the end of the third quarter, but changed to 28 to 14 in the fourth. "Dollie" Gray, main offensive charge for the Aviators scored twice against the Tygers. Although the "Red and Blue Grid ders" felt the sting of defeat in this game and the previous one, they turned out in "fine style" to set back the Barberton Magics 21 to 6 before 9,000 fans here at Hart shorn Field. The fray was sparked by the brilliant passing of Johnny Borton who stunned the Magics with 7 completions in 13 tries, accounting for 110 yards of Aviator yardage. Before a full house in "Tigertown", the Massillon Tigers avenged their 14 to 0 loss, handed to them in Alliance during the 1948 season. Led by their All-Ohio back Irvin 'Ace" Crable, the "Bengals" scored early and frequently to take a commanding 27 to 7 lead at halftime. Crable "chalked up" three tallies while John Borton was the Aviator's offensive standout, tossing 33 passes and hit on 15 for a 200 yardage Bouncing back from their Massillon loss, the Aviators lashed out a 26 to 6 defeat to the heavy Warren Panther squad. "Dollie" Gray's cleats dug in to "pay dirt" twice for Alliance. Joining him in pay dirt tallies were Carroll and Borton, eacli scoring

86 Coming as near as a team can to winning without doing so, against the Bulldogs 01 Canton McKmley, the Alliance Aviators dropped a 37 to 19 decision. Coach "Bup" Kearicks forehead went into wrinkles in the third quarter as the Aviators forped ahead in a short lived 19 to 13 lead, as a result of the scoring passes of the Red and Blue s Borton. Led by Sam Parks, the Bulldogs displayed their reserved strength in the final quarter when the McKinley eleven scored four times to take the game from the Aviators. That was the Aviator's fifth loss but this was only followed by another tilt in which Knowlton's gridders were defeated in the final minutes of play by Cleveland Benedictine In snapping back the Aviators "trampled" the Lions of Canton Lincoln 32 to 7, with Dolhe" Grey dashing off four tallies gaining 132 yards. In bringing one of their leanest seasons to a climax, the Aviators suffered a defeat by Cleveland East Tech 19 to 7. East Tech, which later played in the Annual Charity game in Cleveland Stadium held the Aviators scoreless until the third quarter when Candy Carroll broke away on the longest Alliance run of the season for 52 yards. Eight Aviator gridders ended their football days this season against other high school squads. Graduating seniors are Larry Shells, George Nicholson, Jim Kintz, f^3*"' A^f^Rey,n0lds^ Ljncojn Snow,. and Gaylord Lillick. Named after the season to various All-County and All-Ohio teams were the following: "Dollie" Gray Larry Shells, and Nicholson. *' ^aLlJ M»A% tht thlrd y™ in a row the Booster club and Verhovay Association in Alliance feted the Aviators Thursday night before each ball game. Over the series of these dinners some of the best speakers in the area and state were presented to the entire ffrA°05n!!th SUiCh names as Bob Neal, of Radio Station WGAR in Cleve land and Jimmy Dudley, also of radio fame, on the speaker's program. The Annual Aviator football banquet was held at the Alliance Country Club where, after a fine Z%1 \uJhe mam speaker of the evening, Stu Holcomb, Head football coach at the Uni versity or Purdue was presented. Along with Holcomb there were many other out standing guests at the banquet, who helped honor the 1949 edition of the Alliance grid team. The Alliance Aviators, under the coaching eye of Mel Knowlton, closed out their 1949-50 basketball season with a win-loss record of eight wins against 10 setbacks. This was Knowlton's second year at the head of the Aviator quintet, The Alliance basketeers got off to a slow start at the beginning of the season losing to the Massil lon Tigers'opening game, 55-39, Alliance was quick to jump back in the win column in their next two encounters. Following their loss to the Tigers, the Aviators downed Louisville 38-31, and won two in a row by edging out East Liverpool 31-30. After winning two in a row the Aviators dropped four straight encounters. Mansfield topped Alliance 44-32 and then the Barberton Magics turned the trick, 53-33. Campbell Memorial added their bit and set the Red and Blue back 37-31, and then a Salem Quaker five downed us, 47-43. Alliance broke the losing streak when they met the Youngstown Chaney Cowboys and defeated them 44-33. The next game the Aviators invaded the Canton McKinley Bulldogs and were set back 61-44 on the "music box" floor of their host. Wads- worth was the next foe to fall under the heel of the Aviators to the tune of 40-36. The Canton Lincoln Lions upset the Aviators, 43-37, which was followed by another setack by Massillon, 32-39. Losing two in a row, the Aviators continued their downward trend by dropping their next three en gagements. Battered by Waren, 47-34, nosed out by the Salem Quakers 32-30, and handcuffed by Wellsville 47-34, the Alliance five had plenty of problems to contend with. Finally snapping out of their season's daze the Aviators pounced upon the McKinley Bulldogs with vengeance sending them reeling with a 61-50 lick ing. Continuing their winning streak they nosed out the Lincoln Lions 39-37 and downed the steel city champs, Youngstown Rayen, 46-44. The Rayen contest ended the regular season for the Alliance Aviators. Coach Mel Knowlton will lose only two boys to the graduating class, Jim Kintz and Larry Shells. These two boys will be greatly missed for they bolstered the team greatly during the season. Coach Dave Mainwaring's Reserve squad piled up the best record of the two teams, racking up 10 wins against 7 setbacks. Several members of the Reserve team will have regular berths on next year's varsity squad due to their outstanding playing ability show this year. One of these boys will be Louis Davia, a junior, who showed a great deal of promise in his short role as a varsity player. Also showing a great deal of promise were Barry Vogeli and Victor Domencetti, both of the sophomore class.

92 SPRING SPORTS

The 1949 spring sport sessions proved that the Alliance Aviators still rank high in class A sporting relms by setting the pace in baseball and golf with both teams setting records that A. H. S. should well be proud of.

Under the watchful eye of Baseball Coach Dave Mainwaring, the Aviator nine compiled a fine record of eight victories against two setbacks. Among these eight wins Alliance trounced Canton McKinley twice for two of these victories. Although racking a brilliant season record the Aviators did not fair so well in tournament play. The Canton "Lincolnites" dropped the Aviators in the first fray 4-3 to knock Alliance out of any further play.

The Alliance Golfers are currently on a seventeen game winning streak which began two years ago after they had lost the first game of the season. The "49" season found the undefeated Aviators in a tight race for the Ohio Scholastic championship. When the fire had died and the smoke had cleared, Alliance had been edged by Colum bus Rading but by only two strokes. Don Alberts was number two man for the en tire tournament out of a large group of boys.

Golf Coach Julius Tonges will have a fine array of talent ready to carry on where last year's team left off. Returning lettermen will be Don Alberts and Jim Kintz.

Lack of track facilities again hampered the organization of any track team but definite steps are being taken to establish teams in the future. Prompt action will probably be taken due to the newly organized Ohio Conference in which all other teams have track squads.

93 PARADE OF SPORTS

All work and no play makes girls dull as well as boys. At least that is the theory of Miss Pettis and her followers. As a result of that theory, we have in our school, a girls' sports program. This program is followed during the school term in the form of physical education classes. In the fall when everyone is back in school after a long vacation, physical educa tion classes start off the year with soccer. This sport is similar to football except instead of handling the ball with your hands, you kick it. Of course your aim may be off and you might connect with someone's ankle, but it is all in fun. With a bare five minutes to dress, you run or limp back to the High School from Hazel Park. After soccer is completed; volleyball is the main sport. One might think volley ball would be wonderful after soccer, but after the first few stoved fingers, a small doubt may arise.

Badminton, Miss Pettis and players watch game. Stunts, Mary Peterson slides home.

94 Rowling

Volley Ball Dancing

However physical education classes are not always as bad as they seem. Dancing, next on the program, is a rest period for many. And so with "Swing your partner and promenade" ringing in your ears, you leave dancing for another year.

Next on our "Sports Parade", is basketball. This sport consists of having good eyes, good aim, lots of wind, and a knowledge of the rules of the game.

We are now in the homestretch and have stunts to compete with. In this sport, if you have a flat head and a tough skull, you will do fine. In fact being strong all over is a great asset.

Softball is the last sport of the year and perhaps one of the most exciting, This is also played at Hazel Park.

This is not all in the way of girls sports, however, because the Girls' Athletic Club also sponsors a few extra contests such as bowling and badminton. Tournaments are frequent in many of these sports. Thus the girls sport program is one of varied activi ties throughout the year.

95 BASKETBALL

Basketball is the most up and coming of all girl's sports. It has been played for many years in physical education classes and as a sport sponsored by the G. A. C. Intramural tourna ments have also been played before. However, last year in the 1949 season, something new was added in the form of a varsity basketball team. This team, the first of its kind for many years, was formed to play interscholastic bas ketball. It's first and only game of that season was with Brewster, the game being played there. That game was just the beginning. In 1950, the varsity team was continued and had a full schedule of three games. Those games were with Massillon, Brewster, and Mi nerva. The first two were played at Alliance, the game with Minerva, at Minerva. The sched ule limitations for girl's interscholastic sports are set up by the Ohio High School Athletic As sociation. Part of the requirements for the play ing of interscholastic sports is the one which makes it necessary for the home team to offer a social program to the visiting team. It is the constant aim of Miss Pettis and her associates to further girls sports and good sportsmanship not only between individuals but between schools, as well.

About Miss Pettis Miss Pettis came to Alliance High School in the fall of 1927. Prior to her arrival, there had been only one year of physical education for girls. The only other form of girls physical education was the formation of the Girls' Ath letic Club in the season of 1926-1927 by request of the students. Their leader was Miss Atche- son who helped them write the constitution and started the club which has remained to this day a part of our school. Miss Pettis studied physical education for girls three years at Battlecreek, Mich., one year at Columbia University Teachers College, and worked for her masters degree at Ohio State University. She first taught at Grand Rapids, Mich. Then she came to Alliance where she has remained for the past 23 years, a friend to ev eryone and a strong pillar in the building of a better school.
