Municipal Commissioner From the Dean’s desk..... The twin institutes of the Seth GS Medical College & KEM Hospital were established in 1926 with a nationalistic spirit to cater to the “health care needs of the northern parts of the island” to be manned entirely by Indians. With a glorious legacy of over 80 years, 10 lakh patients and 50,000 plus surgeries annually, these institutes are among the top ranked in the city and country with the Latin maxim “Non Sibi Sed Omnibus- not for self but for all”, embedded in every heart. The year 2020 tumultuous to say the least. With the announcement of the COVID – 19 pandemic by the World Health Organization and the subsequent lockdowns imposed in the country and state, the staff of the institute rose to the occasion magnificently. This is chronicled in a new chapter in this year’s annual report. The trials and tribulations of a public sector institute that stood tall and firm amid the crashing waves of the pandemic is a true tribute to resilience and spirit of all those who worked and continue to work in testing circumstances. Against all odds, the institute continued to excel and touch glorious heights. The first paediatric swap transplant was performed [Urology and Anaesthesia] as was the first Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation [TAVI] [Cardiology]. A new course DM Pulmonary Medicine [Chest Medicine] was rolled out as was a Epidemiology Resource Center [Community Medicine] . A combined PUVA and narrow band UVB chamber was installed [Dermatology]. The Gastroenterology department was nominated as a model treatment centre for the National Viral Hepatitis Control Programme. The Medicine department conducted a study on the use of Itolizumab in patients with COVID -19 while the Clinical Pharmacology department tested the Serum Institute/Oxford vaccine in a little over 100 participants. The Microbiology rolled out diagnostics for COVID -19 and successfully renewed its NABL accreditation. Neonatology was recognized as a Regional Collaborative Center for facility based newborn care and neurology excelled with epilepsy surgeries. Innovative surgeries were devised by Neurosurgery who also procured an intra -operative CT scan with biplanar digital angiography suite. Nuclear medicine started PSMA PET CT for the diagnosis of carcinoma prostrate. Orthopaedics pioneered the “In search of excellence” patient management in multiple sub specialities while Paediatric Surgery performed complex 2D and #D laproscopic surgeries. Paediatrics completed 25 years of treatment of rare genetic diseases while Paediatric Anaesthesia worked with them in the use of Spinraza for children with spinal muscular atrophy. Several workshops were organized by Pharmacology and Therapeutics and Physiotherapy provided excellent support through the year for COVID-19 patients. Plastic Surgery partnered with ReSurge International for post burn contracture while Psychiatry manned a helpline for the mental health of patients afflicted with COVID-19. The department of Transfusion Medicine renewed their NABH accreditation. A glorious paradox of an educational institute is that while the alumni grow old, the Alma Mater grows, forever young. As the institute inches slowly towards it centenary , it is hoped that these developments will constructively change the institutes for betterment of patients, greater efficiency of its enormous staff and help sounder training of its students and resident medical doctors, not to forget the support staff, nursing school and her alumni. At the end of the day, as several thousand patients walk through these hallowed portals each year with hope in their hearts, it will remain our primary responsibility to ensure that they get the best medical care from kind, caring and compassionate physicians; hands that comfort, soothe and heal. As the pandemic continues unabated, the words of Bob Dole were never more relevant - “When it’s all over, it’s not who you were. It’s whether you made a difference”. Hemant Deshmukh Dean - Seth GS Medical College and KEM Hospital January 2021 Editor’s Note... In the first month of 2021, we are ready to embark upon yet another 12-month journey and look forward to foundation day of the institute. It is now time to take stock and look at the year that was- what was achieved, what went wrong, where could we improve and how we can move forward. This annual report in its individual chapters looks at the work, the teaching, the research, publications, awards, achievements and much more. While the general format of the report has remained the same, it has nonetheless chronicled the numerous achievements and changes, both minor and major that have taken place in the last year-2020. The year 2020 will be remembered for being world changing and paradigm shifting and drafting a whole new chapter in the history of mankind. Efforts of individual departments of our institute have been chronicled in a new chapter that has been introduced for the first time. When we look back a few years hence, this chapter will tell the story of a difficult time as also the tenacity and resilience of the human spirit. The experience of putting this document together has been both humbling and enlightening. A huge thank you is due to Dr Hemant Deshmukh, Dean for his faith in me, his patience, vision and tenacity of purpose. This has helped shape the document. Gratitude is also due to heads of department and staff members for sending information. The editorial team [Shruti Bhide, Raakhi Tripathi, Gita Nataraj] that helped me put the report together deserves sincere thanks. I owe a debt of gratitude to the students of my department- Vijaya, Palvi, Sukant and Dhruve for their untiring efforts at follow up and help with editing and formatting. Lastly, thanks are also due to Kalpesh, Lakshmesh and Trivedi Sir at Urvi Compugraphics for layout, formatting, and inputs in the cover design and working long hours to ensure that the report is ready on time. While the compilation has been done over two weeks with utmost care; the sheer magnitude and diversity of the report may have led to omissions and inadvertent errors. I request the staff members to bear with me. Efforts have gone into making the document comprehensive, yet discerning. It is hoped that as one sifts through the pages, the quality and quantum of patient care, education and research and the trials and tribulations of the nameless, faceless health care worker who gave it his all during the pandemic come through and we look ahead to 2021 with new hope and zest.
