Program eBook www.FoodForEducation.org Welcome Friends, Akshaya Patra is a way of life - our way of life. As Shakespeare says, “It is twice blessed. It blesses him that gives and him that takes…it is an attribute to God Himself”. I am honored to be taking over as Chairman of Akshaya Patra from the inimitable Desh Deshpande, who has defined, developed and shaped the growth of the organization over the last 15+ years. He has worked with every chapter and many a volunteer over this time. I am standing on his shoulder as we build this edifice even higher. Our mission at Akshaya Patra is focused and clear: we should not let a child go hungry to school. Children are precious, they are our destiny. We want to leave no stone unturned in striving for our mission. The virtual gala has allowed us to reach an ever-widening group of donors and well-wishers. I am really excited to see how this develops as we become more and more proficient in the use of the platform and the technology. We have an exciting program, intended to be thought-provoking and culturally enriching. I can’t wait for the event to unfold! Siva Sivaram www.FoodForEducation.org About Akshaya Patra Akshaya Patra means the unlimited bowl of abundance and sustenance. Beginning in 2000 serving 1,500 meals to a small group of local schools, with frugal innovation and a focus on efficiency and scalability, the organization has built world-class, highly efficient kitchens that can cook anywhere between 10,000 to 250,000 meals within 6 hours. Over 20 years, Akshaya Patra has scaled to currently serving 1.8 million meals in over 19,000 government schools in 14 States in India daily. We source local produce, operate 55 centralized kitchens and transport hot, nutritious meals in custom-designed vans up to a distance of 40 kms. Often being the only meal in the day for the child, it serves as a critical intervention addressing both, hunger and education. $20.00 feeds a child for an entire school year. Due to the challenges set forth by COVID-19, schools in India are closed. In an effort to make sure our students are getting the nutrition they need, Akshaya Patra has started a pilot project called “Happiness Box” to provide 30 days worth of food and essentials for the children we normally serve through our mid-day meal program. The box contains food, hygiene kits, and educational supplies for the mid-day meal beneficiaries. We are providing these boxes in Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Daman & Diu, Delhi, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Orissa, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh. 77 Million* meals served and counting Total Meal Count Akshaya Patra 61,650,569 Associate Foundations 16,088,159 Grand Total 77,738,728 *As on August 23, 2020 www.FoodForEducation.org Event Timeline 5:00 PM PDT PROGRAM BEGINS 5:07 PM PDT WELCOME REMARKS: VANDANA TILAK, CEO, TAPF USA 5:11 PM PDT HOST CHAPTERS VIDEO 5:19 PM PDT AKSHAYA PATRA VIDEO 5:37 PM PDT PHILANTHROPY FOR CHANGE WITH SMT.
