Jones, and Ping Chong with scholar and adva us Area Editor Karen Shimakawa, took place on 1 May 2015 at nyu’s Cantor Film Center presented by the Asian/Pacific/ American Institute at New York University and the Grey Art Gallery in con- junction with the Grey’s exhibition Tseng Kwong Chi: Performing for the Camera, curated by Amy Brandt. Brandt, who sadly passed away just weeks after the opening, curated this first major travelling survey show of Tseng’s works, which ranged from candid shots of his immediate East Village circle of artistic creators and his little seen Moral Majority series depicting Right Wing politicians posing in front of a crumpled American flag, to his more well- known documentation of the 1983 Body Painting collaboration between Bill T. Jones and Keith Haring. The exhibition also featured Tseng’s popular East Meets West and The Expeditionary series, performance self-portrait series in which the artist posed as his alter ego, the Ambiguous Ambassador, in a Mao Suit and mirrored glasses in front of iconic landmarks in the us, Canada, and Europe. The artist, who died of aids in 1990, was part of the 1980s Mudd Club and Club 57 set with artists such as Ann Magnuson, Kenny Scharf, and Jean-Michel Basquiat and collaborated with Keith Haring, docu- menting the Pop artist’s work in the subways even before his international rise to fame. -

CRITICAL COMMENTARY Crip Club Vibes: Technologies for New Nightlife Kevin Gotkin New York University [email protected] I’ve been thinking about what it would mean to design nightlife around disability. We need all nightlife spaces to become accessible, of course, something that calls for a thoroughgoing restructuring of the built environment, transportation systems, and access labor. But I’m imagining the possibilities for creating a world within the inaccessible status quo, a nightlife community that could divine the truth and complexity of disability history, culture, and resistance. When I ask my disability community in New York City about nightlife, I get a series of sighs. Nightlife is exhausting. That’s not because being disabled in nightlife spaces is in itself exhausting. It’s exhausting because ableism is exhausting and because nightlife is a nexus of many inaccessible cultural forms that make parties, clubs, and bars feel like one marathon after another. We don’t often think of nightlife as a technology itself, but we should. It’s hard to decide the status of nightlife in basic terms: Is it a community? An industry? A social function? If we take up the call in the manifesto that inspires this special issue, we can locate nightlife within the “non-compliant knowing-making” of crip technoscience that relishes the world-making possibilities for disabled living (Fritsch & Hamraie, 2019). ALLAN McCOLLUM Brief career summary Allan McCollum was born in Los Angeles, California in 1944 and now lives and works in New York City. He has spent over thirty years exploring how objects achieve public and personal meaning in a world constituted in mass production, focusing most recently on collaborations with small community historical society museums in different parts of the world. His first solo exhibition was in 1970 in Southern California, where he was represented throughout the early 70s in Los Angeles by the Nicholas Wilder Gallery, until it’s closing in the late 70s, and subsequently by the Claire S. Copley Gallery, also in Los Angeles. After appearing in group exhibitions at the Pasadena Art Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, his first New York showing was in an exhibition at the Sidney Janis Gallery, in 1972. He was included in the Whitney Museum of American Art Biennial Exhibition in 1975, and moved to New York later that same year. In 1978 He became known for his series Surrogate Paintings, which were shown in solo exhibitions in New York at Julian Pretto & Co., Artistspace, and 112 Workshop (subsequently known as White Columns), in 1979. In 1980, he was given his first solo exhibition in Europe, at the Yvon Lambert Gallery, in Paris, France, and in that same year began exhibiting his work at the Marian Goodman Gallery in New York, where he introduced his series Plaster Surrogates in a large solo exhibition in 1983. McCollum began showing his work with the Lisson Gallery in London, England, in 1985, where he has had a number of solo exhibitions since. -

We make judgments about its quality and relevance based on current sentiments and tastes. This is a natural inclination, but unless we take the time to consider where and when the artists were working and what the conditions were like at that time, we miss much of the story that lies behind every great work of art. If we fail to consider that Eastman Johnson’s The Vacant Chair (cat. 4) was painted in 1865, we might conclude that it is simply a nicely painted interior of an old kitchen. When we stop to remember that the Civil War had just ended when Johnson put brush to canvas and that the empty chair might symbolize a missing soldier who will never return home, the painting’s powerful statement is fully realized. When we look at the paintings of great women Impressionists, such as Jane Peterson (cat. 18), it deepens our appreciation of their work when we stop to think of their struggle to be taken seriously at a time when women were con- sidered to be, at best, hobbyists. -
