1. Passenger statistics – January to April 2009

Southampton Airport welcomed 499,522 passengers between January and April 2009 (inclusive), which is 14.3% less than the previous year.

Total Aircraft Movements include; Passenger and Cargo flights, Training Flights, Air Ambulance, General Aviation, Military, Air Taxi and Positioning Flights.

The aircraft movements at Southampton Airport have decreased by 14.1% from January to April 2009, when compared to the same time last year.

4. & Routes

Southampton Airport serves a total of 45 destinations with 14 and tour operator partners. Airlines include: Air France, Aer Arann, Air Services, , , and Skybus. Tour operators include: Esprit Ski, Holiday Options, Inghams, Ski Peak, Ski Total, Thomson and Canterbury Travel. The summer schedule commenced at the end of March.

Eastern Airways – New route to Liverpool Eastern Airways are offering three flights each weekday to Liverpool, and are increasing frequency of flights to Aberdeen from three to five flights each weekday. Both services start on 6th July 2009. Eastern are also offering greater flexibility for south coast business travellers returning from Yorkshire with a convenient mid- afternoon year-round flight from Leeds Bradford to Southampton.

Holiday Options & Flybe – Two new routes to Croatia Holiday Options and Flybe have commenced their two new weekly services to Croatia for Summer 2009. The routes to Split and Dubrovnik started on 3rd May, marking the first time that Southampton and Croatia have been linked by air.

Flybe – 2009 Regional Airline of the Year Flybe has been awarded 2009 Regional Airline of the Year award by the widely acclaimed Air Transport World publication. This is just the second time in the awards 35 year history that the winner has been from the UK.

Blue Islands Blue Islands are changing their aircraft operating the Guernsey route, from a Jetstream 32 aircraft to the bigger ATR 42 aircraft.

Air France - Best Short-Haul Travel Provider Air France KLM was announced winner of the Best Short-Haul Travel Provider at the Business Travel World Awards 2009. The Business Travel World Awards celebrate those companies and individuals delivering excellence in the corporate travel space. The Air France service has moved from Paris Charles de Gaulle to Paris Orly.

Isles of Scilly Skybus - Summer Saver Fares Skybus have introduced new summer saver fares at just £256 return to the Scilly Isles and extended restrictions, reducing the cost for children to travel.

Aer Arann Aer Arann have returned with the route to Cork running 4 flights per week from the end of May. Fares start from £42 one way (including taxes, and charges).

Ski Tour Operators The winter ski season saw a new route to Grenoble and three new operators (Esprit Ski, Ski Peak and Ski Total) join Southampton Airport.

5. Airport Developments

Improving Airport Ambience Work guided by passenger feedback, has been progressing to improve the ambience at Southampton Airport. A number of enhancements have been developed to improve the passenger experience including; • the redevelopment of two passenger waiting rooms in the departure lounge • new energy-efficient LED lighting • improvements to the immigration area ensuring a faster and smoother arrival • the transformation of the new bureau de change outlet, which now features a low-level counter for wheelchair users • the installation of new seating throughout the terminal to create a larger, more open seating area.

New Car Parking Lighting Following feedback, the lighting in the long stay car park has been enhanced to provide a safer and more secure environment for staff and passengers.

6. Management and Staff

Moves and Changes Dave Lees, previously Director of Planning & Development, has become the airport’s Operations Director. This is a broader role covering all operational aspects of the airport as well as planning and development.

Breeze Through Recognition Awards Southampton Airports new airport wide recognition scheme, The Breeze Through Awards, recognises outstanding staff. Staff can nominate their own team, another team or individual using a nomination form, and with support from the relevant manager.

Monthly winners receive a trophy, and have their case study displayed across the airport. Winners will be invited to an annual ceremony where the overall champion will be selected by the MD and an independent judge.

January’s award went to Helen Joyce from BAA for proactively assisting with property issues, enabling businesses to run more smoothly. Helen received complimentary feedback from numerous airport companies for her exceptional customer service skills.

February’s award went to Neil MacBrayne from Computer Centre for always going the extra mile. In the recent office moves in Solent House, Neil responding positively and at pace, allowing others to continue their work, despite this being outside his area of responsibility.

March’s award went to Andrew Donoghue (BAA) for his outstanding knowledge of the security systems and operations, which has seen him repair difficult faults with the hold baggage screening system, and assist with surveillance for police investigations. Using his expertise in a highly professional manner, Andy ensured that operations continued as normal.

April’s award went to Jenny Mullins (Airport Ambassador) for using her initiative and imagination to distribute information to passengers, going above and beyond her role. Examples include; creating information packs for cruise passengers, adding airport literature to the buses, and 'Shop & Collect' bags, and ensuring that every passenger received a timetable within 10 minutes of them arriving onsite from the printers.

ACI Awards Southampton Airport has been named as the European Champion for having the most helpful and courteous airport staff. The award has been given by Airports Council International (ACI), following a survey of over 200,000 passengers worldwide.

The survey captures the passengers’ perception of the quality of more than 30 aspects of service that they have experienced at the airport from check-in to the departure gate through ASQ (Airport Service Quality) scores. ASQ is a customer satisfaction survey which compares Southampton Airport with other airports in Europe and BAA. One hundred and eight airports from around the world took part in the quarterly satisfaction surveys.

In addition to being the award winner of the Airport People Award, Southampton Airport also came second place for the Best Airport in Europe Award, and fifth place worldwide for the Best Airport by Size Award (fewer than 5 million passengers a year).

7. Vortex

There have been no occurrences of vortex damage during the period January to April 2009.

8. Community

Bitterne Park School - Strategic Partnership During March, four students from Bitterne Park School joined the airport for their work experience programme, as part of the strategic partnership with the school. The group spent time with Airside Operations, Security, Engineering, the Airport Ambassadors and Marketing & Communications.

Debbie Chalk, Media & Communications Executive will be taking up the role as School Governor going forward. Debbie manages the partnership between the airport and the school, and is also an ex-pupil.

Fulcrum Challenge 18 young people (aged 16 - 17) from Peter Symonds College in Winchester, took part in this year’s Fulcrum Challenge. The youth development programme challenged the group to raise £1,500 each, which is was then match-funded by the BAA Communities Trust (BAA's own charity), before travelling abroad to help local communities. This year's programme saw the group extend a primary school in the remote region of Binsar in India, which is in a valley overlooking the Himalayas, so that young students no longer have to walk 10 miles a day to to kindergarten. Three members of airport staff travelled with the group as Business Mentors. They include Phil Beattie (Airport Fire Manager), Katie Sibley (Noise & Communications Assistant) and Clare Cook (Airport Ambassador).

Eastleigh Borough Twinning Association Students from senior schools and colleges across Eastleigh took part in this years international language challenge run by the Eastleigh Borough Twinning Association, and supported by Southampton Airport.

The challenge saw students fluently conversing in French, German or Spanish during a full presentation to a panel of judges, followed by a question and answer session on aspects of their chosen country.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation The airport’s Director of Marketing & Communications, Jan Halliday, will be the Chair of this years Walk to Cure Diabetes. The sponsored 5km walk will take place at Paulton’s Park on Sunday 27th September, and aims to raise money to fund a cure for Type 1 diabetes.

Airport Centenary Celebrations Southampton Airport has officially launched a year of celebrations planned for 2010 which will mark the centenary of flight in south Hampshire. The event saw over 100 guests gather to learn the history of the airport, hear the planned activities for 2010, and to understand the economic importance of aviation and aerospace industries in south Hampshire, as presented by Chris Huhne MP. Some of the events include:

• Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (Eastleigh Borough Council) • Maritime Museum Exhibition (Southampton City Council) • Southampton Art Gallery Exhibition (Southampton City Council) • Centenary Website (Hampshire County Council) • Interactive Centenary Display (Hampshire County Council) • RJ Mitchell Lecture (Southampton University) • 100 Special Journeys (Southern Daily Echo) • VIP Opening of redeveloped departure lounge (Southampton Airport) • Community Research and Schools Performance (The Point & Southampton Airport) • Business & Innovation Schools Programme (PUSH & Southampton Airport).

Community & Stakeholder Conference – June 2009 The next conference will be held on Friday 26th June at the Concorde Club in Stoneham Lane in Eastleigh.

This was a 64.9% decrease in the number of complaints received between 2008 and 2009.

Complaints by Household The total number of complaining households for the period January to April 2009 are as follows:

There has been a 46.5% decrease in the number of complaining households compared to 2008.

General The total number of complaints received during the 4 month period January to April 2009 was 67, and these complaints were registered by a total of 38 households. Ten complaints received during this period were not related to Southampton Airport (14.9%).

Location of Complaints Bitterne Park residents registered the most complaints during this 4 month period (23%), with Winchester and Shawford residents providing a further 13.4% and 11.9% of total complaints respectively.

Cause of Complaints The major cause for complaint during this period was noise (41.8%), followed by routing (26.9%).

Vortex There have been no confirmed occurrences of vortex damage during the period January to April 2009.
