  • Aberystwyth University Women's Club 1955-2015 (PDF)
    I. Beginnings Three of us, Mollie Reynolds, Hannah Harbury and myself were having coffee together, and we saw the wife of one of the members of staff going past. In that pre-feministic age, the custom was to refer to ‘the wife of this-or-that professor’. Anyway, not one of us could remember who she was, and we agreed that that was a laughable situation. You have to remember that only a fifth of the number of students that are here today were at the College at that time; the majority of the staff lived in the town and the professors either walked or bicycled to the College. There were very few houses on Waunfawr, and nearly every College department was in the old building. Mollie suggested that we start a Club. And so we set about composing a letter and having copies made. There was no such thing as photocopying then. We were surprised by the reaction, everyone was enthusiastic, and I found myself treasurer of this new Club, much to my husband’s unease! This is how Mair Williams described the formation of the University of Wales Women’s Club (or the College Women’s Club as it was first called) in Yr Angor in 1995 on the occasion of its 40th anniversary. She later recalled that this had happened at a College event around 1954, about the time that Goronwy Rees had arrived at Aberystwyth. Mollie Reynolds suggestion that we start a Club stemmed from the fact that she had been a member of a Women’s Club at the London School of Economics where her husband, Philip A.

  • The Reminiscences of Mrs Ruth Evans J Graham Jones (PDF 96
THE REMINISCENCES OF MRS RUTH EVANS In June 2008, Mrs Pamela Ellis of Aberystwyth very kindly donated to the Welsh Political Archive at the National Library a file of correspondence and papers accumulated by her late husband Dr E. L. Ellis (1922-2008), the author of a magisterial biography of Dr Thomas Jones published by the University of Wales Press in 1992. During the initial stages of his research work, between 1978 and 1982, Dr Ellis had approached some of TJ’s contemporaries who were still alive, requesting them to pen their personal reminiscences of Dr Jones. Those who consented included David Astor (son of Lady Astor), Ruth Evans (widow of Ivor Leslie Evans, former Principal of the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth), A. J. Sylvester, Lady Eirene White (TJ’s daughter) and Marlene Yeo. These typescript recollections have now been designated as NLW ex 2563. Ifor (or Ivor) Leslie Evans (1897-1952) served as Principal of the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, from 1934 until his early death. 1 A native of Aberdare in the south Wales valleys, and the son of the famous musician W. J. Evans, he received his early education at Wycliffe College, Stonehouse, and also studied in France and Germany. At the beginning of the First World War, Evans was arrested in Bavaria as a suspected Russian spy and was imprisoned at Ruhelen prison camp for the duration of hostilities. It was here, ironically, that he fully mastered the Welsh language, a commitment which then saw him change his name from ‘Ivor’ to ‘Ifor’. Upon his release from Ruhelen, he travelled extensively in Europe and spent a brief period in the coal trade at Swansea (‘selling coal’ as he himself subsequently put it).

  • Rediscovering Ellen Evans (1891–1953), Principal of Glamorgan Training College, Barry
100 Rediscovering Ellen Evans (1891–1953), Principal of Glamorgan Training College, Barry Sian Rhiannon Williams During the last thirty years, thanks to the work of historians, publishers, broadcasters, and others, the contribution of women in the history of Wales is, slowly, being acknowledged. Although Welsh historiography needs to move beyond the stage of ‘uncovering’ the lives of ‘forgotten’ women to a more nuanced understanding of gender relationships, the fact remains that many women who were well-known during their lives for their contribution to Welsh national life are absent from the historical record. Thus, ‘rediscovering’ these women is still a valid activity.1 A case in point is Ellen Evans (1891–1953), a prominent figure in educational and cultural circles in Wales in the inter-war and immediate post-war years. Her standing is such that she gained an entry in the Welsh Dictionary of National Biography and her name is included in the National Library of Wales online database.2 Her contribution to the debate surrounding the teaching of Welsh in elementary and secondary schools has been recognised by historians of the Welsh language and culture.3 However, the breadth of her interests and involvement in public life has not yet been explored and little is known of her private persona. She is, therefore, a strong contender for ‘rediscovery’. The aim of this article is to begin that process. The timing is apt since it is the sixtieth anniversary of her death at the time of writing (2013). Her credentials for inclusion in the annals of the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion are strong.
