Montana: Shawn will be starting for the second season in a row, and with 190 career tackles, will soon move on to Montanas career tackles leaders list. He is the Grizzlies second leading returning tackier in 2009. He has played in 41 career games. 2008: He started all 16 games at middle linebacker and was the teams fourth leading tackier with 102 stops. He was fifth on the team with six tackles for loss. He was tied with four other players for the most forced fumbles with two.

He was tabbed honorable mention All-Big Sky Conference. He was Montanas co-recipient of the Golden Helmet Award (hardest hitter) with senior strong safety Colt Anderson. He is also an outstanding student and named to the leagues all-academic squad for the third time in 2008. 2007: He missed the 2007 season after undergoing surgery and red-shirted. 2006: He was the Grizzlies seventh leading tackier with 78 stops and played in all 14 games. He was an All-Big Sky academic team pick. 2005: He played in 11 games as a “true” freshman and had one start (vs. Cal Poly on Oct. 22). He was named to the Big Sky academic squad. Montana: Marc begins his senior season ranked sixth at Montana in career all-purpose yards (3,316), 11th in career receiving touchdowns (16), and 19th in career receiving yards (1,539). He has been ranked among the top Football Championship Subdivision returners the past two seasons, and last year he added one of the FCS s premier receivers to that list. 2008: He set a school record with 2,265 all-purpose yards, which is the fifth most in Big Sky Conference his­ tory. His 1,308 receiving yards for 15 touchdowns are the second most in a season at UM. Mariani led the Big Sky in punt returns, averaging 16.22 an attempt, which ranked him fourth in the nation. He was ranked 29th in the country in receiving yards per game (81.75). His 94-yard punt return against Idaho State tied the league record set by the Grizzlies Tuff Harris at Eastern Washington (2006). He was a first team all-league pick at both wide receiver and as a re­ turner. He was named second team All-American by the Sports Network and an honorable mention pick on the College Sporting News “Fab 50.” He led the Big Sky with four multiple touchdown receiving games, while his five 100-yard receiving games were the third most by a Big Sky player in 2008. He tied a school mark with four touchdown catches against Southern Utah, and his 208 receiving yards in that game are the sixth most (tie) ever by a Griz player in a game. His 11.5 sacks are the 20th most in school history, which his 18.5 tackles for loss tie him for 23rd. He will be starting for the second year in a row in 2009. He is Montanas sixth leading returning tackier. He has played in 40 career games. 2008: He was ranked fifth in the Big Sky Conference in sacks with .53 a game, while his 0.88 tackles for loss per contest ranked him sixth. He was an honorable mention all-league selection. His 50 tackles were the ninth most on the team. Despite battling an injury mid-way through the season, he started in all 16 games. He led the Grizzlies in both sacks (8.5) and tackles for loss (14). His five pass deflections ranked him fifth on the team, while his two forced fumbles tied him with four other players for the most on the squad. 2007: He played in 11 of 12 contests and had 23 tackles. Montana: Steve and fellow senior Dan Beaudin have given the Grizzlies a quality tandem the past three sea­ sons. He is Montanas second- leading returning receiver. He has played in 40 con­ tests and started in 27. 2008: He started in all 16 games. He was Montanas third leading re­ ceiver with 24 receptions. His 282 receiving yards were the fourth most on the team. He was an All-Big Sky Conference honorable mention selection. 2007: He started in six games and played in 11 contests. He was an All-Big Sky honorable mention pick and also named to the leagues all­ academic team. He also saw action on special teams and had three tackles in that capacity. 2006: He played in 13 games (he missed the Portland State game due to an injury) as a “true” freshman and started in five. He had three tackles on special teams. High School: Steve earned 12 letters at nearby Frenchtown High School: four in football, basketball, and track. He was a three-time all-state pick at tight end and twice all-state choice at defensive end. Career-wise he had 71 receptions for 1,417 yards and 24 touchdowns. He served as team captain in football for coach Steve Pinsoneault as a senior. Frenchtown compiled a record of 25-6 during his three-year varsity career. Pfahler caught four touchdown passes in his teams 33- 24 loss to Billings Central in the state “B” semifinal game in 2004. He participated in Montanas annual East-West Shrine Game. He was a three-time all-league selection in basketball. He was a three-time all-state selection in track and has a personal best of 210-11 in the javelin. Career Highs: He had four catches for 55 yards at Northern Colorado in 2008. His career-long reception was 35 yards at Weber State last season. He was a wide receiver in high school, but it was evi­ dent that he was going to be a great tight end for us early in his career. He is a hard-working guy. Hes a smooth route runner. Hes good in both aspects of the game; he a good blocker in the run game, and he’s a good pass-catcher in the passing game.”

He led the Grizzlies with 10 pass deflections, and his .88 passes defended per game ranked him ninth in the Big Sky Conference. He had a team-leading (tie) four interceptions. He also tied for the team lead in forced fumbles (two) and fumble recoveries (two). He had five or more tackles in 14 of 16 games, and eight or more stops in six contests. He was a second team All-Big Sky selection. He was chosen the recipient of UMs 2008 Tony Barbour Award (Best Exemplifies Grizzly Football). 2007: He played in all 12 games, and although he did not start, he was the teams lOth-leading tackier. His dad, Jim Schillinger, is the head track coach at Baker High School, an assistant football coach there, and was a run­ ning back for the Grizzlies in 1969-70. His older brother Jace was a running back at Dickinson (N.D.) State and is that school’s all-time leading rusher. Says Coach Hauck: “Shann has a big frame. He also has great speed. He is a good all-around athlete. He’s smart. He gets himself in a position to make plays. I think he will have tremendous production for us at the safety posi­ tion.
