A 1980 graduate of the UM School of Journal­ ism, O’Day returned to his alma mater in 1998 after an 18-year career in the newspaper AREYOU business, first as sports editor of the Kalispell (Mont.) Daily Interlake, then in his hometown of Cut Bank, Mont., as owner/publisher of the MAKING ALLTHE twice-weekly Western Breeze newspaper. O’Day served as assistant director of the Grizzly Athletic Association (now the Grizzly RIGHT MOVES? Scholarship Association) for three years before becoming Director of Development for UM Athletics in 2001. On June 30, 2005, he was named by UM President George Dennison as the Director of Athletics at Montana. O’Day currently serves on the NCAA Division 1 Football Issues Commit­ tee and the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision Playoff Selection Com­ mittee. This year, O’Day will serve as chairman of that particular committee. In addition, he sits on the board of directors for the Master’s of Education in Intercollegiate Athletics Leadership program with the University of Washington and is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). In 2007, he was honored by the All-American Football Foundation by receiving the Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletics Director Award. Prior to returning to UM, O’Day was a charter member of the Cut Bank Education Foundation and Alumni Association and was Cut Bank’s Citizen of the Year in 1992. He organized the Golden Triangle Chapter of the GAA in 1992 and served as president until his appointment at UM in 1998. He was also actively involved in many other community service organizations. In 1991, he was the recipient of The University of Montana Service Award. Jim and his wife Kathy have three sons: Chris (25), Kevin (24) and Brian (19). Chris and Kevin are graduates of The University of Montana and reside in Arizona, while Brian will be a sophomore at UM this fall. Several of Jim’s many accomplishments during his first five years in the ath­ letic department include UM Athletics winning the schools first Sterling Sav­ ings Bank Presidents Cup in 2007 (Montana was second in 2010 and 2009, and third in 2008); paying off a $1 million deficit two years early; instrumental in constructing a 2,000-seat east-side expansion to Washington-Grizzly Stadium that was ready in time for the 2008 football season; and capturing conference titles in women’s golf (coached by Joanne Steele) in 2006 and in women’s basket­ ball (coached by Robin Selvig) in 2007, 2008 and 2009. In addition, the men’s basketball team won Big Sky Tournament titles and made NCAA appearances in 2006 and 2010. In 2006, the team under the direction of Coach Larry Kryst- kowiak won a first round game in the NCAA tourney vs. Nevada. The school’s only other NCAA men’s basketball tournament victory came in 1975 against Utah State. Your advantage. www.pfg-insurance.com 2 0 1 0 Grizzly Game Day Program - 2 MONTANA Grizzly Head|Coach Robin P Robin Pflugrad, Head Football Coach Robin Pflugrad was named the head football coach at Montana on Dec. 31, 2009. Pflugrad (pronounced: flew-grad) is UM s 34th head football coach. This past season he returned to Montana, where he served as the wide receivers coach and assisted with the offense. In 2009, Montanas offense was ranked second in the nation in scoring (35.8 ppg), ninth in total offense (427.40), and 14th in passing (267.2 ypg). Senior wide receiver Marc Mariani was named to several All-Ameri­ can teams and set numerous UM records. Pflugrad, 52, is a veteran coach who was a mentor in the prestigious Pac-10 Conference for 13 seasons with stints at Oregon, Washington State, and Arizona State. He has been a coach for 30 seasons overall and has worked 27 of those years at the college level. He came to UM from the University of Oregon where he served as the wide receivers coach for the previous three seasons (2006-08). Prior to his stint in his hometown of Eugene, Rob coached the tight ends and served as assistant head coach and the recruiting coordinator for five seasons (2001-05) at WSU. He was the wide receivers and recruiting coordinator at ASU from 1995-2000. During his career, he has been instrumental in the development of numerous quarterbacks and wide re­ ceivers who have received All-American recognition, along with several all-conference honorees, academic all­ conference athletes, and academic All-Americans. He began his coaching career at his alma mater, PSU, in 1980. A year later he had a one-year stint at South Eugene High School and then re­ turned to the college ranks for good. He came to Montana in 1986 when Don Read was named the UM’s head coach. Pflugrad was an assistant coach for the Griz from 1986-94. While at UM he worked with the quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers and was promoted to assistant head coach in 1991. Among the Grizzly standouts he worked with was quarterback Dave Dickenson, who won the Walter Payton Award in 1995, broke 25 school records, three national marks, and guided Montana to the national championship (1995). Pflugrad is a 1980 graduate of PSU with a degree in business administration. He was a wide receiver and team captain as a senior in 1979 for the Vikings. Robin and his wife Marlene have a son, Aaron, and a daughter, Amanda. The Walter Camp Coach of the Year is selected by the nation’s 125 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors. Cutcliffe is the first Duke coach to receive the award, and the first honoree from the ACC since 2001 (Ralph Friedgen, Maryland). Under Cutcliffe’s direction, the 20th-ranked Blue Devils have set a school record with 10 victories and earned their first-ever berth in the Dr. Pepper ACC Championship Game. Duke clinched the Coastal Division title and championship game berth with a 27-25 victory over in-state rival North Carolina on November 30. Duke (10-2, 6-2 in the Coastal Division) will face top-ranked Florida State (12-0) on Saturday, December 7 in Charlotte, N.C. The Blue Devils enter the game with an eight-game winning streak – the program’s longest since 1941. In addition, the Blue Devils cracked the BCS standings for the first time this season, and were a perfect 4-0 in the month of November (after going 1-19 in the month from 2008 to 2012). Cutcliffe was hired as Duke’s 21st coach on December 15, 2007. Last season, he led the high- scoring Blue Devils to a school record 410 points (31.5 points per game) and a berth in the Belk Bowl – the program’s first bowl appearance since 1994.
