CARDIFF HALF MARATHON 2019

Saturday, 5 October BBC One Wales, 9.30am

Jason Mohammad presents live coverage of Wales’ largest road race and the UK’s second largest half marathon - the Cardiff Half Marathon 2019.

The event, which was established in 2003, has grown considerably over the years, selling out for a third year running. This year sees a record 27,500 runners registered to take part alongside a trio of fiercely contested men’s, women’s and wheelchair elite races. They will line up to start in front of Cardiff Castle and then will take in the sights of the many historic buildings and landmarks around the course. Some amateur runners aim to break personal bests while others are running for reasons close to their hearts, raising money for charity.

There has been a greater focus than ever on women’s sport this past year, from the football World Cup in France to netball’s own World Cup in Liverpool. The 2019 Cardiff Half Marathon is no exception, with more female entrants taking part in the race this year than male.

Sunday’s race is part of a full weekend of activities. It will be preceded by a whole host of family-friendly activities at Saturday’s Festival of Running.

For the first time this year, the race will also be shown across the UK with BBC Two joining the coverage from 9.45am.

There will be commentary from John Rawling, with Lowri Morgan and Jamie Baulch reporting.

● Cardiff Half Marathon Highlights 2019 will air on BBC Two Wales, Sunday 6 October, at 10pm Lewis Davies 0303 082 0396 / lewis.davies@.co.uk

DOWN THE SOCIAL WITH OWEN MONEY

Monday, 7 October BBC One Wales, 7.30pm

Down The Social with Owen Money sees the comedian and Radio Wales presenter, along with club performer Mandy Starr, explore how social clubs have been the beating heart of countless communities across Wales for decades.

In the final episode of the series, they pay a visit to the ‘jewel of the valleys’, Newbridge Memorial Hall. ‘The Memo’, as it’s better known, began life as a social club more than 100 years ago, but it has grown, undergone an epic restoration and today is open to the whole community with a library, ballroom and magnificent 1920s art- deco theatre.

One local group formed at the venue suddenly found themselves in the spotlight with national exposure. KLA, a dance group who started 8 years ago, became a huge sensation by reaching the live final of BBC One’s ‘The Greatest Dancer’. With the Great British public going crazy for them, they travel to London along with KLA co- founder Amy Booth for the final, with the rest of the Newbridge Memo dancers back at the Memo supporting and watching the drama unfold live on TV.

Owen and Mandy meet Barbara Bevan, a visionary who fought to save the building after the Celynen Mine closed. The Memorial Hall had been built onto the social club after the First World War to remember the 75 people of the Celynen Colliery who had lost their lives. Barbara’s grandfather was one of those men.

THE DYNAMIC DUO

Thursday, 10 October BBC Two Wales, 9pm

The Dynamic Duo is a 60 minute documentary about eccentric duo Tony Flatman and Julian Meek, two of Wales’ most unlikely press barons. Four years ago they launched the Abertillery Dynamic, a free local newspaper. Combining opinion pieces with regular features such as ‘Sheep of the week’ and ‘The Pub Review’, this is no ordinary paper.

After 36 editions, worn out and broke, they were forced to close down. But now they are back and ready to relaunch. In a bid to save the paper, Julian and Tony want to create their most ambitious issue ever and persuade their small community that the paper matters.

Tony and Julian are no ‘run of the mill’ journalists. Neither drives a car and they both rely on public transport to get around and find their stories. Tony writes all his copy out in longhand and refuses to use a computer, while Julian combines his journalism with a side line of being an ordained priest and published poet - but struggles to sell enough ad space to make the paper solvent.

This wry, warm-hearted documentary celebrates these two lovable characters, as their old-fashioned approach to local journalism collides with the modern world.

IOLO’S STREET LIFE

Friday, 11 October BBC One Wales, 7.30pm

It’s early autumn in the last episode of Iolo’s Street Life. The nights are drawing in and creepy crawlies are out and about. Iolo goes spider hunting in Caernarfon to see why so many of the 670 species in Britain live in towns. He comes face to face with the infamous false widow spider that makes headlines every autumn and is blamed for nasty poisonous bites.

As daylight breaks in Cardiff, a feeding frenzy begins in the suburbs as trees heavily laden with berries are attracting hungry birds. There may be a number of different species but there’s only one boss, the mistle thrush. On a street in Hirwaun, a bird has picked a fight with a car in an attempt to defend its food supplies for the winter.

In this new four part series naturalist Iolo Williams looks at the wild side of town. He travels around Wales to understand why people are seeing more wildlife moving in to towns today and how they’ve successfully adapted to urban environments.
