You could have corralled the whole herd of them for less. But the beauty with Thoroughbreds, of course, is that each and every individual that changed hands at the Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale--for an aggregate ,1,356,850, up 24% in only the third year of the auction--retains the right to prove their relative valuation all wrong, once broken and sent in training. After all, that's exactly what happened with several graduates of last year's sale. Besides the four fillies who have won listed races, they also included a ,28,000 colt beaten just a neck in the G2 Norfolk S. over the road at the Royal meeting; and, one of the fairytales of the season, the ,3,000 filly Bettys Hope (GB) (Anjaal {GB}), who completed a hat-trick for Rod Millman when scooping a ,122,925 pot in the Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury in July. $400,000 Pat Day Mile Presented by LG&E and KU (Grade III) 95th Running – Saturday, May 4, 2019 (Kentucky Derby Day) 3-Year-Olds at One Mile on Dirt at Churchill Downs Stakes Record – 1:34.18, Competitive Edge (2015) Track Record – 1:33.26, Fruit Ludt (2014) Name Origin: Formerly known as the Derby Trial, the one-mile race for 3-year-olds was moved from Opening Night to Kentucky Derby Day and renamed the Pat Day Mile in 2015 to honor Churchill Downs’ all-time leading jockey Pat Day. Day, enshrined in the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame in 2005, won a record 2,482 races at Churchill Downs, including 156 stakes, from 1980-2005. None was more memorable than his triumph aboard W.C. Partee’s Lil E. Tee in the 1992 Kentucky Derby. He rode in a record 21 consecutive renewals of the Kentucky Derby, a streak that ended when hip surgery forced him to miss the 2005 “Run for the Roses.” Day’s Triple Crown résumé also included five wins in the Preakness Stakes – one short of Eddie Arcaro’s record – and three victories in the Belmont Stakes. His 8,803 career wins rank fourth all-time and his mounts that earned $297,914,839 rank second. During his career Day lead the nation in wins six times (1982-84, ’86, and ’90-91). His most prolific single day came on Sept. 13, 1989, when Day set a North American record by winning eight races from nine mounts at Arlington Park.

  • Bill Oppenheim, Dec
Bill Oppenheim, Dec. 16, 2009–Roll The Dice FROM THE DESK OF... Bill Oppenheim ROLL THE DICE Predictability. Well, who wouldn=t like a crystal ball? Mine might be slightly less clouded than others, but anybody who tells you they can predict which sires are going to be successful, and which aren=t, is deluding somebody. There=s a long history of can=t-miss stallion prospects who ended up on foreign shores, and equally a distinguished roll-call of relative nobodies (Distorted Humor, Pivotal) who=ve become household names in the breeding world. Write it down a 100 times: what they do on the racetrack isn=t necessarily what they=re going to do as a sire. In recent years, stallions that were unproven when the horses were bred have sired more than their share of good horses in their first or second crops. It wasn=t just a sales ploy, though for a while there you had a better chance of making money by using first-year sires regardless of whether they ended up good, bad, or indifferent. Rather the opposite is the case during recessionary times--breeders tend to fall back on the proven commodities, and the unproven sire becomes a more difficult sell. You can particularly see this when, as now, the prices on proven sires have fallen so much. Thus, I have knocked out from consideration as When you have legitimately good stallions standing for >value= unproven sires five horses who stand for more $7,500 and $10,000, the unproven horse at that and than $40,000: F2008 Bernardini ($60,000 first all higher prices has to offer something really special to two-year-olds 2010); F2009 Street Sense ($50,000); attract those breeders who were fighting over them and F2010 Curlin ($60,000) and Big Brown ($55,000)-- two years ago.

To assist in the detection of spurious and the correction of inaccu- rate pedigrees, is one of the purposes of the present publication, in which respect the first Volume has been of acknowledged utility. The two together, it is hoped, will form a comprehensive and tole- rably correct Register of Pedigrees. It will be observed that some of the Mares which appeared in the last Supplement (whereof this is a republication and continua- tion) stand as they did there, i. e. without any additions to their produce since 1813 or 1814. — It has been ascertained that several of them were about that time sold by public auction, and as all attempts to trace them have failed, the probability is that they have either been converted to some other use, or been sent abroad. If any proof were wanting of the superiority of the English breed of horses over that of every other country, it might be found in the avidity with which they are sought by Foreigners. The exportation of them to Russia, France, Germany, etc. for the last five years has been so considerable, as to render it an object of some importance in a commercial point of view.
