Calshot Lifeboat
Calshot Lifeboat 6th June 2013 - Roy Underdown Pavilion Andy Headley, a volunteer crew member of Calshot Lifeboat, gave the Society a presentation about the history and work of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and Hamble’s local RNLI lifeboat based at Calshot. He explained how the work of Calshot Lifeboat station fitted into context with the rest of the RNLI activities. Andy started by showing a DVD of the wide range of rescues that the RNLI undertake. This included commercial ships out at sea (up to 100 miles offshore) and leisure boats along the coast, as well as people and animals close to the shore or on inland waters. The RNLI is a charity and 85% of the money it raises goes to saving lives on the water but he emphasised that safety education and accident prevention was very important part of its work. It receives no government funding. The different types of lifeboats were described from the all weather self righting seagoing lifeboats, which can be used in all conditions, to the faster inshore boats. 90% of the crew have no maritime experience when they join and they have to be at least 17 years of age. Elliot a new volunteer crew member of this age helped Andy demonstrate the equipment they use, including putting on the different types of lifeboat crew’s clothing. Elliot does not yet have a licence to drive a car but Andy emphasised that when the crew are called out by a pager they keep to the road speed limit so as not cause another accident. -

At that time I believed that the job could be done quickly and easily. Twelve years, three computers, and some 8,000 titles later I know that I was wrong about the size and difficulty of the task, but, nevertheless, right about decid- ing to undertake it. Although demanding, it has been the source of much satis- faction. Now the writing has been completed and the book is ready for publication. It is lengthy, but not really finished. En los 84 años de la historia de esta regata, la Fastnet del año 1979 mantiene su legendaria historia de haber sido la más dura y más dramática de todas. Murieron 15 personas y en 51 barcos tuvieron que rescatar a varios de sus tripulantes de la mar. En toda su historia, sólo en la Fastnet del año 1931 había muerto otro tripulante durante una tempestad, cerca del señalado banco Labadie. That is where we’re all Liams in a new boat in strange waters. Survive that storm, learn from that storm, and you are the Water a better, safer, happier sailor. In the summer of 1979, 15 sailors were Forty years ago, in August 1979, I—and lost at sea during a brutal edition of the many hundreds of other sailors who made Fastnet Race. On the 40th anniversary a hobby of touching the water—had a par- of that infamous storm, a survivor ticularly meaningful and often- shocking recounts the meaningful changes that experience when a fleet of modern yachts happened in its aftermath. racing off England and Ireland was 52 surprised by a storm of hurricane propor- 53 tions. Five boats sank, many more were seriously damaged, and 15 racing sailors died in the Irish Sea. Many critics despaired for the future of ocean racing, and yet, instead of slip- everal years ago, I learned ping away under the shadow of Fastnet something profound by ’79, our pastime gathered forces and observing my then-toddler re-created itself in a whole new image. A grandson, Liam, wearing a sport famous mostly for dramatic daring life jacket, step aboard his was transformed into a community that Suncle’s catboat for the first time. His eyes respected doubt, conducted testing, and twinkling in expectation, he set out on thoughtfully accepted a fact that many a tour of the cockpit, spinning a block sailors had stubbornly denied, which here, pulling a sheet there, and cheerfully is that sailing can often be risky. -
