SchwentBootlegger Son Martin has 150 barrels of whiskey his dad made stashed away somewhere and his old war buddy, Frank Long, now a crooked prohibition agent, has his sights set on them. Will Son cave in under the pressure and hand over the whiskey or will he put Long and his cronies into the ground?Reading an Elmore Leonard book is like drinking a few cold ones with an old friend on their front porch. In this case, it would be whiskey we'd be drinking instead of a couple frosty beers.Rural Kentucky in the 1930's is far from Elmore Leonard's usual haunts but after watching several seasons of Justified, I figured he could handle it. I was right.The Moonshine War plays out like a lot of Elmore Leonard books. The promise of violence keeps building until the glorious shootout at the end. Frank Long trying to strongarm Son Martin out of his valuable whiskey is more of the same. It went a little differently than I thought it would near the end, which is always a plus for me.The country dialog is very well done and drives the plot forward. Like in most Leonard books, Son Martin is just a little slicker than Frank Long and the others.Son reminds me of Raylan Givens a bit of Raylan was running moonshine instead of being a US Marshall. He's a conflicted character, his young wife dying from the flu while he was in the army leaving him somewhat directionless. He's got a bit of that Givens inner rage going as well. When his neighbors started turning on him when he wouldn't roll over for Long and the others, I knew the violence was coming. The Moonshine War actually feels like a western more than anything else.Any gripes? Not a one besides wanting to read more about Son Martin.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. His characters can be intelligent and offensive. This is not an easy road to travel and yet whenever I read his books I feel as if I am either watching a John Wayne movie or I am a child sitting at my great grandfather's feet listening with bated breath as he tells all of cousins all about what is good and bad about the South. Fine anti-hero/protagonist Son Martin, who makes the best hooch in the region and is also sitting on 150 barrels of barrell-aged whiskey that his father made early into the prohibition period. The highly-valuable cache of liquor attracts a wide range of crooks and conmen who want a crack at the liquid fortune; and the novel is mostly about Son Martin's efforts to keep them at bay.As is the case in most all of Leonard's stories, the characters and the dialogue between them is direct, spare and engrossing. There's plenty of violent action and a dynamite ending. One of the joys of most of the author's writing (for me, at least) is the guarantee that good/virtue will more or less triumph over evil in the end. Nothing hokey in that--it just happens naturally.     Elmore Leonard, 1925-2013

    ELMORE LEONARD, 1925-2013 Elmore Leonard was born October 11, 1925 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Due to his father’s position working for General Motors, Leonard’s family moved numerous times during his childhood, before finally settling in Detroit, MI in 1934. Leonard went on to graduate high school in Detroit in 1943, and joined the Navy, serving in the legendary Seabees military construction unit in the Pacific theater of operations before returning home in 1946. Leonard then attended the University of Detroit, majoring in English and Philosophy. Plans to assist his father in running an auto dealership fell through on his father’s early death, and after graduating, Leonard took a job writing for an ad agency. He married (for the first of three times) in 1949. While working his day job in the advertising world, Leonard wrote constantly, submitting mainly western stories to the pulp and/or mens’ magazines, where he was establishing himself with a strong reputation. His stories also occasionally caught the eye of the entertainment industry and were often optioned for films or television adaptation. In 1961, Leonard attempted to concentrate on writing full-time, with only occasional free- lance ad work. With the western market drying up, Leonard broke into the mainstream suspense field with his first non-western novel, The Big Bounce in 1969. From that point on, his publishing success continued to increase – with both critical and fan response to his works helping his novels to appear on bestseller lists. His 1983 novel La Brava won the Edgar Award for best mystery novel of the year.

The female lead character named Linda Moon (recording artist Christina Milian) is at the end of her rope, stuck in a cheesy all-girl cover group called “Chicks International” (a Destiny’s Child wannabe) performing covers ala “Lady Marmalade” at the Viper Room. She also has mafioso type manager (Vince Vaughn), thug body guard (The Rock) and record company head (Harvey Keitel). When Linda meets Chili he breaks her away from her shifty management and cover group to write and record her own songs and of course becomes a huge, legitimate superstar. The story ends with her performing at the Grammys. The soundtrack features two brand new songs from Christina Milian – one written by Alicia Keys and Rich Harrison (producer of “Crazy In Love”), and one co-written by Will.I.Am from the hip-hop/rap group The Black Eyed Peas. Directed by F. Gary Gray (Friday, Set It Off, The Negotiator, A Man Apart, The Italian Job), Be Cool also stars Cedric The Entertainer, Steven Tyler from Aerosmith, Andre 3000 from Outkast, Debi Mazar, Danny Devito, Robert Pastroelli, Anthony Ribustello, Alex Kubik and Kimberly Brown. EDGAR AND JULIE GRISSOM COLLECTION OF ERNEST HEMINGWAY: NEW COLLECTION INCLUDES RAREST TITLES The USC Libraries are now home to the most complete collection of Ernest Hemingway’s published work, thanks to a newly-acquired collection of more than 1,200 items. The comprehensive collection was put together by Dr. C. Edgar Grissom of Mississippi, who began collecting Hemingway’s work more than 50 years ago. He assembled a collection of Hemingway items that includes editions, printings and issues of books, periodical appearances, galleys, keepsakes, translations and anthologies. The collection includes some of the rarest print Hemingway titles, such as the first and second editions of Three Stories and Ten Poems, the first and second printings of the American edition of In Our Time, and the first edition of The Sun Also Rises. In addition, the collection includes Edgar Grissom has long been fascinated by differences in editions sets of advance uncorrected proofs and salesman’s of Hemingway’s work, such as changes in text, dust jackets, and dummies.

    The Effects of Hip-Hop and Rap on Young Women in Academia by Sandra C Zichermann A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Education Sociology in Education Ontario Institute for Studies in Education University of Toronto © Copyright by Sandra C Zichermann 2013 The Effects of Hip-Hop and Rap on Young Women in Academia Sandra C Zichermann Doctor of Education Sociology in Education University of Toronto 2013 Abstract This thesis investigates the rise of the cultures and music of hip-hop and rap in the West and its effects on its female listeners and fans, especially those in academia. The thesis consists of two parts. First I conducted a content analysis of 95 lyrics from the book, Hip-Hop & Rap: Complete Lyrics for 175 Songs (Spence, 2003). The songs I analyzed were performed by male artists whose lyrics repeated misogynist and sexist messages. Second, I conducted a focus group with young female university students who self-identify as fans of hip-hop and/or rap music. In consultation with my former thesis supervisor, I selected women enrolled in interdisciplinary programmes focused on gender and race because they are equipped with an academic understanding of the potential damage or negative effects of anti-female or negative political messaging in popular music. My study suggests that the impact of hip-hop and rap music on young women is both positive and negative, creating an overarching feeling of complexity for some young female listeners who enjoy music that is infused with some lyrical messages they revile.

    INVENTORY TO ARCHIVAL BOXES IN THE MOTION PICTURE, BROADCASTING, AND RECORDED SOUND DIVISION OF THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Compiled by MBRS Staff (Last Update December 2017) Introduction The following is an inventory of film and television related paper and manuscript materials held by the Motion Picture, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound Division of the Library of Congress. Our collection of paper materials includes continuities, scripts, tie-in-books, scrapbooks, press releases, newsreel summaries, publicity notebooks, press books, lobby cards, theater programs, production notes, and much more. These items have been acquired through copyright deposit, purchased, or gifted to the division. How to Use this Inventory The inventory is organized by box number with each letter representing a specific box type. The majority of the boxes listed include content information. Please note that over the years, the content of the boxes has been described in different ways and are not consistent. The “card” column used to refer to a set of card catalogs that documented our holdings of particular paper materials: press book, posters, continuity, reviews, and other. The majority of this information has been entered into our Merged Audiovisual Information System (MAVIS) database. Boxes indicating “MAVIS” in the last column have catalog records within the new database. To locate material, use the CTRL-F function to search the document by keyword, title, or format. Paper and manuscript materials are also listed in the MAVIS database. This database is only accessible on-site in the Moving Image Research Center. If you are unable to locate a specific item in this inventory, please contact the reading room.

    OUTKAST’D AND CLAIMIN’ TRUE: THE LANGUAGE OF SCHOOLING AND EDUCATION IN THE SOUTHERN HIP­HOP COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE by JOYCELYN A. WILSON (Under the direction of Judith Preissle) ABSTRACT The hip­hop community of practice encompasses a range of aesthetic values, norms, patterns, and traditions. Because of its growth over the last three decades, the community has come to include regionally­specific networks linked together by community members who engage in meaningful practices and experiences. Expressed through common language ideologies, these practices contribute to the members’ communal and individual identity while simultaneously providing platforms to articulate social understandings. Using the constructs of community of practice and social networks, this research project is an interpretive study grounded primarily in the use of lyrics and interviews to investigate the linguistic patterns and language norms of hip­ hop’s southern network, placing emphasis on the Atlanta, Georgia southern hip­hop network. The two main goals are to gain an understanding of the role of school in the cultivation of the network and identify the network’s relationship to schooling and education. The purpose is to identify initial steps for implementing a hip­hop pedagogy in curriculum and instruction.
