Artistic Directors’ Note Welcome to Antaeus and the final production of our 2015 season. These are extraordinary times for our company. For a number of years, we’ve been acutely aware that in order for Antaeus to not just survive, but to grow and thrive, we needed to find a new space. We are thrilled to tell you that in March, we signed a lease on a 7,600 sq/ft space in the heart of downtown Glendale. Simultaneously, we embarked on our Play On! capital campaign to raise the funds needed to convert that space into a brand new theatre complex that the Antaeus Theatre Company will be able to call home for many years to come. However, what we’re building goes beyond the bricks and mortar of a new theatre, because we believe Antaeus is more than a theatre company. Antaeus is a community — a community of artists and audience members like you, grounded in the belief that the experience of live theatre is a unique and necessary one in our society. Productions like Henry IV, Part One, Picnic, and now Uncle Vanya are the centerpieces of the Antaeus mission. But we do much more. We have an Arts Education program, the Antaeus Academy, the Antaeus Playwrights Lab, an ever popular staged reading series, and an annual ten minute play festival. All this activity has one ultimate goal: to serve our community. When you come to an event at Antaeus, you become a part of that community, a part of the conversation, a part of the mission to enrich the culture of our city. The response to our Play On! capital campaign has been phenomenal and we’re gaining momentum every day. Naming opportunities in the new theatre are going fast. Foundations and corporations are beginning to take notice too, mainly because they see broad support coming from an ever-growing group of passionate contributors at every level. Now is the time to join us and become a part of building something special for our city. Thank you for being here, and please enjoy Uncle Vanya! Play On! John, Rob, and Bill MISSION Antaeus is a cooperative theatre ensemble founded to empower the actor and to bring classical theatre to Los Angeles. The company exists to create a family of artists and audiences and is dedicated to exploring stories with enduring themes. VISION PRODUCTION: In a virtual, media-driven world, we value the communal experience of live theatre. We are dedicated to excellence in the performance of the written word. We challenge and inspire our community through storytelling that is visceral and immediate. PROCESS: We are devoted to the ongoing development and growth of our artists and remain committed to exploring new ways of rehearsing and performing. We nurture an environment where artists can risk failure in the pursuit of greatness. EDUCATION: We believe that learning never ends. We train ourselves; we train the next generation; and we include our community in this work. Director’s Note We read six different versions of Uncle Vanya around the Antaeus library table before deciding on Annie Baker’s vital rendition. The marriage of Chekhov and Baker shows us that we haven’t changed very much in over 100 years. There is a stunning relevance to today, and we get excited when a classic play speaks to us in the modern world. But maybe there’s a lesson here. Astrov’s environmental concerns are frighteningly relevant today, but so is all the boredom, the dissatisfaction, the thwarted wanting, all the hopes and desires unfulfilled, the aborted plans, the love not returned, the closed hearts... Astrov, Act 4: “Look, in one hundred, two hundred years, there will be people who look back and laugh at us because we lived our lives so foolishly and tastelessly. Maybe those people will have found a way to be happy.” It’s now a hundred plus years.
