Letter to U.S. Senate HELP Committee Opposing the Nomination Of
January 6, 2017 The Honorable Lamar Alexander The Honorable Patty Murray Chair Ranking Member Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Pensions U.S. Senate U.S. Senate Washington, D.C. 20510 Washington, D.C. 20510 Dear Chair Alexander and Ranking Member Murray: On behalf of the National Partnership for Women & Families and the activists and supporters we represent, I write today in strong opposition to the nomination of Andrew Puzder to be U.S. Secretary of Labor. Mr. Puzder’s nomination represents a stunning and unwelcome departure from the dedicated and powerful champions who have held the post in recent years, and who have helped advance policies that promote fair wages, equal pay, paid sick days, paid family and medical leave and equal employment opportunities. The Puzder nomination betrays America’s workers, especially women and people of color whose rights he has worked to erode. The National Partnership for Women & Families is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to promoting fairness in the workplace, reproductive health and rights, access to quality health care, and policies that help women and men meet the dual demands of job and family. For more than 45 years, we have worked to advance policies that create opportunities for women in the workforce and greater economic security for women and their families. The National Partnership has worked tirelessly to secure updated wage and hour protections for millions of America’s workers, new equal employment opportunity protections for federal contract employees, and vigorous enforcement of the Fair Labor Standards Act and the Family and Medical Leave Act – all of which will be in grave jeopardy if the U.S. -

Princetonian Long Time Obama Aide and Long Time Writer of Classmate News: Chris Lu '88
The Daily Princetonian Long time Obama aide and long time writer of classmate news: Chris Lu '88 By Jacob Donnelly • Staff Writer • April 20, 2014 On April 5, 1988, at 2:27 a.m., Christopher P. Lu ’88 put the finishing touches on his senior thesis, wrapping up the cover letter to his cheekily-titled research project, “The Morning After: Press Coverage of Presidential Primaries 1972–1984.” The subject of birth was evidently preoccupying him at the time. “In many ways, writing a senior thesis is like having a baby,” he wrote. “The idea for the paper is conceived one day unexpectedly and then gestates inside one’s head for nine months … I now submit this thesis like a proud father, confident that it will stand on its own two feet as a piece of scholarly research.” However, Lu, this year’s Baccalaureate speaker who is a former White House Cabinet Secretary and the current Deputy Secretary of the Department of Labor, had no idea then that his forays into politics and government, rather than over, were only in their embryonic stage. He would remain attached to Princeton as well, serving on the board of trustees of The Daily Princetonian, helping the University’s trustees navigate Washington and diligently keeping up with classmates in order to feature them in the pages of the Princeton Alumni Weekly. “We weren’t totally uncool:” At Princeton Jane Martin ’89, a former sports editor for the ‘Prince,’ remembers Lu as a senior news editor for the ‘Prince,’ a fellow member of Cloister Inn and a good friend. -
Statement of the Honorable J. Brett Blanton Architect of the Capitol
Statement of The Honorable J. Brett Blanton Architect of the Capitol Architect of the Capitol Fiscal Year 2021 Appropriations Statement before the Subcommittee on Legislative Branch, Committee on Appropriations, United States House of Representatives March 5, 2020 Chairman Ryan, Ranking Member Herrera Beutler, and members of the subcommittee, I appreciate the opportunity to present the Architect of the Capitol’s (AOC) Fiscal Year (FY) 2021 budget request of $798 million. Last month, I was honored to join this notable institution as the 12th Architect of the Capitol. In the first few weeks of leading this organization, I met with my executives and staff to better understand the strengths and weaknesses of the agency. I am quite impressed with those that I have met thus far. I believe the AOC has all the necessary elements to succeed in its mission of serving Congress and the Supreme Court, preserving America’s Capitol and inspiring memorable experiences. I honestly feel the best is yet to come for the Architect of the Capitol. The agency I inherited has much to be proud of. Massive, once-in-a-generation renovations of exterior facades, interior spaces and system infrastructure are occurring across campus. Industry-leading changes to energy production and efficiency are being realized through the Capitol Power Plant’s cogeneration system and several Energy Saving Performance Contracts. These transformation energy projects will maximize the use of appropriated funds and have the potential of reducing the Capitol Campus’ energy consumption by upwards of 50 percent by 2025. The Capitol Building
CAPITOL VISITOR CENTER TEACHERTEACHER LLESSONESSON PLANLAN The Capitol BuildiNg Introduction The Capitol is among the most architecturally impressive and symbolically important buildings in the world. The Senate and the House of Representatives have met here for more than two centuries. Begun in 1793, the Capitol has been built, burnt, rebuilt, extended, and restored; today, it stands as a monument not only to its builders but also to the American people and their government. As George Washington said, public buildings in the Capitol city “in size, form, and elegance, should look beyond the present day.”1 This activity features images of the U.S. Capitol building — architectural plans and artistic renderings from its original design and subsequent expansion. Examining these images, students engage in class discussion and individual reflection, considering how a building itself might serve as a symbol and monument. Then, they draft images that capture their own interpretation of how a Capitol building should look. While intended for 8th grade students, the lesson can be adapted for other grade levels. 1 The Writings of George Washington from the Original Manuscript Sources, 1745–1799. John C. Picking the Vice President

In the first episode, Vice President Selina Meyer keeps asking her secretary whether the president has called. He hasn’t. She then walks into a U.S. senator’s office and asks of her old colleague, “What have I been missing here?” Without looking up from her computer, the senator responds, “Power.” Until recently, vice presidents were not very interesting nor was the relationship between presidents and their vice presidents very consequential—and for good reason. Historically, vice presidents have been understudies, have often been disliked or even despised by the president they served, and have been used by political parties, derided by journalists, and ridiculed by the public. The job of vice president has been so peripheral that VPs themselves have even made fun of the office. That’s because from the beginning of the nineteenth century until the last decade of the twentieth century, most vice presidents were chosen to “balance” the ticket. The balance in question could be geographic—a northern presidential candidate like John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts picked a southerner like Lyndon B. -

Great men are almost always bad men.” In politics, academia, science, business, media and even religion, the record of history confirms Acton’s aphorism.
