I have been sent by my elders in the high level Panel to run the proceedings of the day today and before we do that, I do want to encourage that all of us who are here, we must be registered, as I understand that some have already registered. Because there are many languages that we work with, there are interpretation devices or gadgets that are available at the back, if you need those, you just need to take your ID and they will give you your gadget. We have interpretation from English to isiXhosa, Setswana, Afrikaans; we should be having sign language as well. In the list, in the gadget, Channel 1 will be English, Channel 2 will be Afrikaans, Channel 3 ke Setswana, Channel 4 isiXhosa. I want to take this opportunity and thank you for joining us as the High Level Panel (HLP), we are now in province Number 8 and what we have observed throughout is that province no 2 always gets better than no 1; no 3 better than 2, number 4 better than? It means number 8 has a challenge of being better than 7 and the rest, so that is the challenge that we have. The HLP is here at this hearing led by the chairperson (CP) of the Panel, which I want you to help me in welcoming President Kgalema Motlanthe as the president of the Panel. He is very keen to come and engage with you but I want him to wait a bit, let’s welcome Mkhulu again to the province. I am thus making a request that when you are in the NW also look into those laws of the former Bophutatswana. I know that there are some of our people in other villages that are still being oppressed by these laws. There is the land law of 1978; there are still some of our people that are suffering under that law. At the time there were “Trust lands” where chiefs were requested to take care of people, knowing that the land does not belong to them, but now some of these chiefs have taken the people’s lands; our people are not able to own land. So I am requesting that some laws of the previous government be looked into going forward. And with the top three reasons to visit less than a six-hour drive from Johannesburg, this region is more than fun. It’s convenient. Gambling is the name of the game here, although not always in the traditional sense. Place your luck in a knowledgeable ranger’s hands at Madikwe Game Reserve and bet on how many lions he’ll spot on the sunrise wildlife drive. You have to stay to play at this exclusive reserve on the edge of the Kalahari, and the lodges here will be a splurge for many. But for that once-in-a-lifetime, romantic Out of Africa–style safari experience, South Africa’s fourth-largest reserve can’t be beat. If you’d rather spot the Big Five without professional help, do a self-drive safari in Pi- lanesberg National Park. The most accessible park in the country is cheaper than Madikwe, and still has 7000 animals packed into its extinct volcano confines. Plus it’s less than three hours’ drive from Jo’burg. When you’ve had your fill betting on finding rhino, switch to cards at the opulent Sun City casino complex down the road. The final component of the province’s big attraction trifecta is the southern hemisphere’s answer to Las Vegas: a shame- lessly gaudy, unabashedly kitsch and downright delicious place to pass an afternoon. Madikwe, Pilanesberg and Sun City may be the North-West Province’s heavyweight at- tractions, but there are more here than the province’s ‘Big Three’.

At Rustenburg continue on the N4 through Swartruggens towards Zeerust Please Note: The N4 is a toll road with four toll gates to Zeerust. Three before Rustenburg and one just after Swartruggens • In Zeerust make a RIGHT TURN at the ABSA bank in Main street, towards Gaborone/Madikwe. Refuel here as there is no fuel in the Madikwe Reserve • After aproximately 83km you will see the Abjaterskop Entrance into the reserve on your RIGHT • Once you enter the Park there is about 32km of dirt road to the lodge.

    02 April 2002 Dear I&AP, ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT FOR THE PROPOSED IKAROS SUBSTATION AND ASSOCIATED 400 kV TRANSMISSION LINE INFRASTRUCTURE, NORTH WEST PROVINCE As a registered Interested and Affected Party (I&AP) for the proposed Ikaros Substation and associated 400 kV Transmission line infrastructure project in the North West Province, this newsletter aims to further facilitate your understanding of the proposed project and the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process being followed. The first phase of the EIA process (i.e. the Environmental Scoping Study) has been completed, and detailed studies are currently being undertaken within Phase 2 of the process (i.e. the EIA). The public participation process has been on-going throughout this process and will continue until the final EIA Report is submitted to the environmental authorities for decision-making. 1. REFRESHER: BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE PROPOSED PROJECT Eskom Transmission propose the construction of a new 400/132 kV substation (to be known as Ikaros Substation) on the eastern side of Rustenburg. This new substation will receive power from a 400 kV Transmission line looped in from the existing Matimba-Midas 400 kV line between Ellisras and Fochville. The primary purpose of the proposed project is to improve the reliability of the electrical supply to the towns of Brits, Marikana, Kroondal, Mooinooi and Rustenburg, as well as surrounding communities, farms, businesses, and the increasing number of platinum and chrome mines and smelters in the Rustenburg area. Electricity loads required by platinum and chrome mining and smelting in the Rustenburg area is expected to reach the combined firm capacities of the existing substations in the area (i.e.

    Chief Molema and the Foundations of Tshidi History”

    CHAPTER ONE: “CHIEF MOLEMA AND THE FOUNDATIONS OF TSHIDI HISTORY” Relatively little information remains of the first Chief Molema’s life, yet the vital choices he made and the independent town he built made him vital to the history of the Molopo region. But for Chief Molema, this thesis argues, his grandson might not have interested himself in history at all. This chapter reconstructs aspects of his life that have been documented and to which Dr Molema would return, when attempting to re-create and explain his community’s history. This story begins some 83 years after the old Chief’s death. In 1964, near the end of Dr Seetsele Modiri Molema’s life, historian Dan Johns interviewed him in Mafikeng.1 Johns highlighted his recent political life in the African National Congress, skirting the doctor’s youth and his family’s eminence in the (then) small British Bechuanaland town, Mafikeng. Likewise, he skimmed over Molema’s education in the Eastern Cape, Scotland and Ireland. Dan Johns [DJ]: What was your early education? Dr Seetsele Modiri Molema [SMM]: I was born here in Mafeking and went to school here at the Mission School until Standard 4, then to the Mission School in Hazeltown (?) [Johns seems not to have known about Healdtown].2 Went to Lovedale for Matric, and then went overseas. My father was keen on education, he was the first teacher of the people here. We were the leaders in education, this was our family tradition. DJ: Did the family hold any particular position? SMM: Yes, my grandfather was the brother of a chief.
