Part I concerns ways in which young children develop a sense of value. A general introduction to the concept of self-esteem is followed by three chapters that relate findings on developmental aspects of self-esteem. These chapters focus on the ways in which infants and toddlers develop and consolidate a sense of self, preschoolers test and evaluate the self, and kindergartners and primary school students set new standards for the self. Part II covers implications of the knowledge base for practitioner:. The text concerns ways in which adults can promote self-esteem in children, care for infants and toddlers, guide preschoolers, and teach kindergartners and primary school students in ways that promote the development of self-esteem. A concluding chapter summarizes the discussion and indicates implications for policy.
