Thursday=S Trackside Preakness Report FRIDAY, MAY 19, 2017 SHAMAN GHOST BACK IN PIMLICO SPECIAL THURSDAY=S TRACKSIDE by Ben Massam PREAKNESS REPORT Stronach Stable=s two-time Grade I winner Shaman Ghost (Ghostzapper) looms squarely as the one to beat for trainer Jimmy Jerkens in Friday=s GIII Pimlico Special S. traveling the GI Preakness S. distance of 1 3/16 miles. Exiting four consecutive tries at the highest level--including a runner-up finish behind champion Arrogate (Unbridled=s Song) in the GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational Jan. 28 and a win in the Mar. 11 GI Santa Anita H.--the 5-year-old appears to be only getting better with age. APeople are realizing that Ghostzapper is a good stallion,@ Jerkens said. AHis horses develop in time and that=s what you want. Lookin at Lee=s braided mane flopped back and forth as the Derby runner- up was under a very snug hold coming off the far turn. Motion reasoned that the filly, whose two wins as a juvenile came at distances of a mile or greater, may not have been sharp enough to handle the cutback in distance off a five-month layup. AI was disappointed with the Beaumont, of course, and I was hoping she would run well,@ Motion said. AIf she did that, we were going to hopefully go to the Oaks with her.
