Introduction to the UKCAT

VR: Passage 1

Amanda Knox served 4-years in prison in Italy for the murder of Meredith Kercher in Perugia in 2007. The trial was covered extensively by media around the world. There are many reasons for this, including the unusual and macabre nature of the murder of the young English student. But the centre of attention was undeniably Knox herself, whose youth, good looks and often strange behaviour before and during the murder trial, made her both famous and infamous. Also convicted of the murder was Knox’s then boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, who was given a 25-year sentence – one year less than Knox.

Knox and her legal team had always pointed to a number of inconsistencies in the case against her. The defence repeatedly cited the possible contamination of DNA evidence used against her, as well as her treatment during questioning. This was allegedly aggressive, and conducted over many consecutive hours in Italian: a language that Knox did not then understand fluently. In 2009, her family told the Sunday that Knox had not been given an interpreter.

Knox and Sollecito’s convictions were overturned on October 3rd, 2011 after a second appeal. The decision was based largely on a 145-page report questioning the validity of the DNA evidence. The hearing was conducted solely in Italian, and Knox spoke in detail, clearly and cohesively, when called upon. After being released, Knox returned to the USA, where she lives with her family. However, her acquittal was overturned in March, 2013, and the case will go back to court. If she is found guilty, the Italian authorities could demand her extradition from the USA.

VR: Passage 2

Scientology is a body of beliefs and practices, started in 1952 by science fiction writer L Ron Hubbard. Hubbard was succeeded by the current leader of , , in 1987. The was granted tax exemption by the US Inland Revenue Service in 1993, on this basis that it was a ‘religion’. Scientology is also recognised as a religion by countries including Sweden, Spain and Portugal. However, other nations, like Canada and the United Kingdom, do not afford Scientology religious recognition. Many people go as far as to suggest that it is a cult, on the basis that it brainwashes and extorts its followers. This is because it is impossible to ascend the ranks of the Church of Scientology without paying cash to advance through the various levels, which range from ‘’ to Operating Levels I through XV.

It can be widely read on the internet (which practising Scientologists are deterred from using), that Scientology scriptures make reference to a character named . As dictator of the "Galactic Confederacy", Xenu supposedly brought billions of his people to Earth 75-million years ago, stacked them around volcanoes and killed them using hydrogen bombs. Some Ex-Scientologists have said that the Church of Scientology only tells its followers about Xenu when they reach Operating Thetan Level III.

Perhaps the most famous practitioner of Scientology is Tom Cruise, who is an Operating Thetan Level VII. David Miscavige was Tom Cruise’s best man at his wedding to Katie Holmes in 2006. Cruise has spoken in favour of the Church of Scientology many times since joining in it in 1990.
