Acknowledgement 86 iv Balancing Sustainability Pillars Message from the PRIME MINISTER of MALAYSIA

I wish to congratulate the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) for organising the MPOB International Palm Oil Congress and Exhibition (PIPOC 2019) with the theme - “Balancing Sustainability Pillars”.

PIPOC 2019 is the hallmark palm oil event - gathering all industry players around the globe and is an important platform to update on the latest research and technologies breakthroughs as well as to chart the direction for a sustainable oil palm industry.

Malaysia is the world’s second largest palm oil producer and exporter, having embarked on the journey for commercial cultivation more than a hundred years ago. The development of the oil palm industry in all sectors has benefitted the national economy making it an impetus for rural development and contributes to the global oils and fats market.

The oil palm industry which has progressed by leaps and bounds is the pride of Malaysia. The achievements of this industry resulting from a far-sighted policy which includes research and development has made us a leader in oil palm innovations. New technologies, inventions and innovations in the whole supply chain have improved productivity, processing and enhancing sustainable practices of the oil palm industry.

The government is committed and will continue to formulate strategies to ensure further growth of the highly competitive and sustainable Malaysian oil palm industry. Therefore, it is my great hope that PIPOC 2019 will facilitate palm oil industry players to chart their strategies in ensuring a sustainable palm oil industry and the realisation of the country’s Shared Prosperity Vision 2020.

Thank you.

Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad

Balancing Sustainability Pillars 1 Message from the Minister of PRIMARY INDUSTRIES

I would like to thank the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) for making this significant event a meaningful gathering for the palm oil industry to exchange and discuss the way forward towards the global sustainability of the palm oil.

Malaysia’s palm oil planted area of 6 million hectares produce around 20 million tonnes palm oil annually and is exported to more than 160 countries worldwide. The industry has provided employment to over 3 million people along its supply chain, including to more than half a million smallholders.

Being one of the biggest producers and exporters of palm oil and palm oil products, Malaysia has an important role to play in fulfilling the growing global need for sustainable palm oil.

In line with this importance and with the aim to strengthen the image of the palm oil industry, the Government is committed to ensure all palm oil in Malaysia are sustainably produced under the Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification. The industry is striving to achieve the target of 100% MSPO certified oil palm estates across Malaysia by the beginning of 2020. This would pave the way for better market access for Malaysian palm oil products.

MSPO has taken into account compliance to domestic laws and regulations, including sustainability criteria aligned to the 3P’s of sustainability, People, Planet and Profit and the 2030 Agenda of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

PIPOC 2019 will showcase some of the progress made thus far in research and good practices, specifically with regards to sustainability.

Thank you.

YB Teresa Kok

2 Balancing Sustainability Pillars Message from the Chairman, Malaysian Palm Oil Board

I would like to thank YAB Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, Prime Minister of Malaysia for kindly consenting to officiate the MPOB Palm Oil International Congress and Exhibition (PIPOC 2019).

PIPOC is the flagship event of the Malaysian Palm Oil Board, organised once every two years to propagate the latest technologies and innovations to industry players around the globe. In line with the theme, Balancing Sustainability Pillars, the Congress showcases initiatives undertaken in the pursuit of a sustainable oil palm industry.

PIPOC 2019 has five concurrent conferences which all revolve around the theme in the context ofthe industry’s value chain. These conferences will provide insights of the strides made in terms of technology, innovation, trends and issues.

In keeping its tradition, we are proud to have renowned speakers and industry experts sharing their knowledge and deliberating on the latest developments, new scientific findings, and progress in terms of sustainability and trade in the global oil palm industry.

As the world’s largest palm oil event, PIPOC 2019 provides excellent networking opportunities for more than 2000 delegates from 40 countries. It features 120 presentations from over 100 speakers, and 400 exhibition booths promoting the latest technologies, equipment and products related to the oil palm and palm oil sectors.

I am confident that PIPOC 2019 is relevant to all participants, in some way or another, and will inspire them to contribute towards the sustainability of the oil palm industry. I wish all of you a successful and meaningful conference.

Thank you.

Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Mohd Bakke Salleh

Balancing Sustainability Pillars 3 Message from the Director-General, Malaysian Palm Oil Board

It gives me great pleasure to welcome all the guests, participants and exhibitors to the PIPOC 2019.

PIPOC 2019’s theme Balancing Sustainability Pillars provides participants valuable opportunities to update and explore the latest technologies and development related to the sustainability of the palm oil industry.

The progress of the Malaysian palm oil industry is partly attributed to dedicated research and development, which is the thrust of MPOB activities. The focus on research and development along the industry’s entire spectrum maximises synergies between economic development, environmental stewardship and value- addition in order to ensure that future growth is carried out within a sustainable framework.

MPOB’s research and development in all aspects of the oil palm industry has successfully produced more than 600 technologies and 179 services that are applicable to the oil palm industry. Around 30% of the technologies have been successfully commercialised. These technologies and services can be categorised based on the various sub-sectors of the industry, such as plant protection, plant biotechnology, milling and processing, animal feed, oleochemical and food formulations. In addition, MPOB has produced almost 2000 scientific publications since its establishment on 1 May 2000. Some of them were published in the finest peer-reviewed journals including three in the prestigious journal Nature.

I wish to thank the Delegates, Session Chairmen, Plenary Speakers, Paper Presenters, Exhibitors, Sponsors and those who have contributed to the success of PIPOC 2019.

Thank you.

Dr. Ahmad Parveez Ghulam Kadir
